Oswego, NY — Music in Our Schools is an annual celebration that takes place throughout the month of March. It was created to engage people from across the country in promoting the benefits of music education.
SUNY Oswego is one of many schools to participate in the event. Director of Choral Activities, Professor Tsutsumi says there are many ways to get involved with music on campus.
“Our music department offers both music majors and minors,” she says. “There are various ensembles that any student on campus can join.”
She says that music provides a feeling of achievement, as well as the opportunity to create strong bonds and long-lasting friendships.
Oswego’s only show choir, Vocal Effect, is bonded together by the power of music. President of the group, Deeno Burgos, says its a beneficial experience.
“It’s just a fun thing to do. You get to meet all kinds of people and you just find some way to connect with other people,” Burgos says.
Second year member, Lexi Bruening, says that music has been her rock, by helping her find herself in a lot of different ways.
“Just being able to sing and being with people who enjoy singing as much as I do and performing,” she says. “It was a really rewarding experience and I’m so glad I found it .”
In honor of Music in Our Schools, Vocal Effect will showcase their musical talents with a performance scheduled for April 21 at 7 p.m. in Sheldon Ballroom. Admission is free and open to the public.
