Baldwinsville, NY- – Since its founding in 2000, Crossfit has begun to grow in popularity. The sport combines high intensity with low durations. The workouts incorporate endurance, strength, and flexibility in order to exert the most out of participants in a shorter period of time.
Crossfit has grown to over two billion members and 10,000 gyms all around the world. This worldwide epidemic prides itself on the importance of a healthy community atmosphere. However, many individuals feel Crossfit is meant for only those of a specific age and body build.
“The uniqueness of Crossfit lies in how universal it is when it comes to who can do it. I have athletes ranging in ages from 14 to 64 with all different skill levels” Smokey Hollow Crossfit co-owner Tim MacConehey said.
Members of the Crossfit community have the opportunity to compete year round in a series of competitions, in both team and individual divisions. Every year these competitions stand as the main qualifiers for the Crossfit Games. The Crossfit Games, is this sports equivalent to the Olympics. The best athletes in the world come together to compete for who will be crowned fittest woman and man on earth.
In the past, the Crossfit Games have been held in Carson, California. However, the venue has been moved to Madison, Wisconson. The Games will begin this August.

Lakers Win Close One over Buffalo State
The Oswego State men’s hockey team defeated conference foe, Buffalo State, 4-3 on Friday night at the Marano Campus Center Arena. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC while the Bengals drop to 3-2-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in conference play.
It did not take long for Oswego to find the back of the net as Joseph Molinaro scored his first goal of the season just five minutes into the game. However, Buffalo State responded with a score of their own to make it a tie game. Although there was not any scoring in the second period, the third made up for it. Aaron Huffnagle and Cameron Berry each scored for the Lakers during the period in five on five action. With Buffalo State down by one and time running out, the Bengals pulled their goalie for an extra skater. However, that move allowed Mitch Emerson to score an empty net goal which sealed the win for the Lakers.
In his third start for Oswego, goaltender David Richer stopped 21 shots. Buffalo State’s Ian Sylves made 35 saves during his time in the crease.
The Lakers will look to maintain their undefeated SUNYAC record tomorrow night against Fredonia in another home matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 pm.

The Great Pumpkin Run
Need to get back into “running shape” or just want to have a good time with your friends? You are in luck because next Saturday, October 15, both Cooper and Glimmerglass fitness centers will host a 5k run called The Great Pumpkin Run. This race is to benefit Blessings in a Backpack.
Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, people, and resources, to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry. In the United States, there are more 15-million children in this country who are at the risk of hunger.
“In previous years, this race has donated money to the Susan G. Komen foundation for Breast Cancer”, said Sarah DeGeorge, a Graduate Assistant for Oswego Fitness Centers. “This year we wanted to donate to Blessings in a Backpack because the proceeds will impact the local Oswego community.”
This 5k can be done as either a run or walk. The course starts and ends just outside of Hart Hall. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the race which includes best costume, the most participants from a club/organization/Resident Hall floor and many more. Trophies are awarded for those who have the top 3 finishing times (both men and women). Also, Cider, donuts and pumpkin decorating are included after the race.
Students can register at either Cooper or Glimmerglass Fitness Centers now until October 15 for five dollars. To those that did not register beforehand, from 12:30pm to 1:15pm, there will be a table outside of Marano Campus Center to register right before the race.
So if you have nothing going on for October 15, come out and walk or run for a great cause.
