Hansen Earns First Career Shutout
The Oswego State men’s hockey team defeated the Brockport Golden Eagles 3-0 on Saturday night in the battle for sole possession of second place in the SUNYAC. After the victory, the Lakers stay undefeated at the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena and move to 6-1-1 overall with a 4-0-1 conference record. Meanwhile, Brockport drops to 6-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the SUNYAC.
The first period did not result in a score by either team with defense playing a prominent role. However, Oswego was able to find the back net early in the second period as Aaron Huffnagle connected with Cameron Berry for the score. The goal had additional meaning with it leading to teddy bears being launched onto the ice for the annual Teddy Bear Toss. After a count, it was announced that 736 bears were collected for donation.
In the third period, the Lakers looked to extend their lead and they did with Joseph Molinaro sending a slapshot past Brockport goalie, Matt Schneider. This would not be the highlight of the period though as physicality between both teams was at a high. For the second straight home game, the Lakers saw one of the members of the opposing team earn a five minute major penalty as well as an ejection. With momentum on their side, Oswego was able to seal the win with a last second empty net goal by Mitch Herlihey.
Cedric Hansen manned the net for the Lakers playing the entire duration of the game while stopping 19 shots. The game marked the first shutout of his career.
Oswego will travel to Potsdam for another SUNYAC matchup on Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 pm.

Zonta Witches Ball Raises Funds to Fight Domestic Violence

OSWEGO, NY — The Zonta Club of Oswego has taken their celebration of Halloween to the next level with their second annual Witches Ball at the Lake Ontario Conference Center. According to the Witches Ball chairperson, Tammy Elowsky, the Zonta Club of Oswego serves as a service and advocacy group for women.
“Our friends of ours do a Witches’ Night Out, and they told me about their event. And I thought it was fantastic,” Elowsky said. “And so we decided to do a different spin on it and call it a Witches’ ball, some of the wizards are allowed to come. But we have all kinds of vendors and dancing and fun but it’s all for a great cause.”
The event had supported the Oswego County Opportunities’ Safe Services program to provide aid to survivors of domestic violence. Chairperson Elowsky strives for the Witches Ball to improve and evolve into a bigger and better event than ever before.
“So last year we had about 300 people that attended at our first year. We were absolutely amazed at that. We’ve outgrew our venue and we’ve come to the convention center this year,” Eloswky said. “And we’ve had more people, I don’t know what the final count is now. We’re obviously hoping to grow, looking for more vendors, whatever we can do to raise more money for this awesome cause.”

Tips on Staying Healthy during the Winter
OSWEGO, NY – Where the temperatures seem to get colder and the work load seems to become heavier, this is the time of the years where a healthier life style is the most important way to get you through these winter months. Sharing living quarters, restrooms and combined social activities makes it easier for students to catch that common cold or flu. But even more so, unhealthy practices like eating junk food, not exercising regularly and not getting enough sleep can have the worst outcome on a students daily life.
“In college I pack myself full of vitamins. I grew up in Virginia and we get a lot of sun and light over there, which vitamin D comes from sunlight,” said Deanna Jones. Well during the winter months we don’t have much sunlight so I take a Vitamin D pill every morning to help jump start my system.”
Eating right seems to be one of the biggest problems for college students. Many don’t realize that this is not only important to consume but to help fight off germs and bacteria.
“I starting drinking propel water. Just the flavor packets to flavor up my water to make sure I am drinking it. That has like 50% Vitamins across the board as opposed to the generic Walmart brand. So its worth the extra 50 cents to get the propel version just to make sure you are getting the electro lights you need and all vitamins you need. Because you need that to fight off any sort of cold or flu.” Said Deanna Jones, Resident student of Oswego
Healwithfood.org has many useful tips on how to eat right on a low budget. For instance, substituting soda with a fruit juice and if your still craving a carbonated drink, add a little seltzer water or ginger ale.
However, if you still need that extra little kick to start eating right, you can see a dietitian right here on campus.
