The Oswego State field hockey team’s four game winning streak came to an end after a 5-1 loss to William Smith.
The Herons opened the scoring with two goals early in the first half to give themselves a 2-0 lead going into halftime. In the 40th minute, the Lakers were able to get on the board thanks to Katie Reynolds’ team leading seventh goal of the season. That would be all for Oswego though as William Smith responded with three more scores.
Lakers goalkeeper Sarita Charap made 11 stops after playing the entire game with her teammate, Brianna Ciganek also contributing two defensive saves. Emily King played a majority of the game at the goalkeeping position for the Herons, notching three saves.
Oswego, now 4-3, will go on the road to face conference foe, Brockport, on Saturday.

Oswego Sub Shop employee tests positive for COVID-19
OSWEGO, NY — On Thursday, September 24th, Oswego Sub Shop released information via their Facebook page about a part-time employee testing positive for COVID-19. The employee went on a camping trip to the Adirondacks last week before returning back to work on Sunday, September 20th for her shift from 3:45 pm to 10:35 pm, the post reads. During the shift, the employee was “experiencing allergy like symptoms” and was sent home early.
“She woke up Monday morning with a fever, went and got tested and was given the results that she was positive around 12:00 noon yesterday September 23rd, Owner William Greene stated in the post. “We worked closely with the Oswego County Health Department to determine what employees needed to quarantine as a precaution for 14 days, they have been contacted.”
The company notified all 40+ employees about the positive case prior to the announcement on Facebook, in cooperation with the Health Department’s protocols. This morning, the company had Sanitizing Technologies completely sanitize the store along with their delivery cars, which usually happens once a month along with this emergency treatment. Oswego Sub Shop will remained open under normal operating hours.
Oswego County Health Department released a press release this afternoon around 3:45 p.m. regarding the potential exposure. Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang was quoted in this document stating, “any customer who visited the restaurant during that time should monitor themselves for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days.”

Changes in the weather
Oswego, NY- For the last month there has been dramatic changes in Oswego’s weather. The fluctuations in weather have lead to snow, rain, 60 degree weather, and various other conditions. Rumors have been spiraling around campus that this change in weather has lead to many people getting sick. However, this rumor has been proven false.
“The reason you have a big flux in rhinoviruses like the common cold in the fall season, and in the spring season is because that’s just when it spreads the most. That’s when those viruses peak, ” WTOP-10 Chief Meteorologist Alec Zuch said. “And then, on top of that in the winter time that’s when flu is the most common. So it has nothing to do with temperature, it has more to do with you know, when that virus actually goes around.”
Several studies at universities across the United States have proven this statement to be true as well. Bacteria and viruses are the reasons for people’s illnesses. The cold temperature typically makes it easier for the bacteria and viruses to survive. Meanwhile, the warm weather lets allergens into the air more easily. These things have made it a great environment for both allergens and bacteria to survive. Plus, the elements Oswego has provided recently has not helped conditions either.
The Mary Walker Health Center is providing students with treatments for common cold like symptoms. If symptoms become more serious, it is advised that students see a doctor or another medical professional as soon as possible.

Seniors Carry Lakers to Win
The Oswego State men’s basketball team defeated Geneseo by a final score of 65-58 on Saturday. With the win, the Lakers finish the regular season with a 13-2 overall record and 10-8 conference record. The Knights fall to 14-11 on the season.
On his senior day, Josh Ivey gave Oswego the start they were looking for. Ivey scored 11 of the team’s first 14 points and played a pivotal role as the Lakers took a eight point lead into halftime. Geneseo fought back in the second half though as they went on a 15-4 run to erase the deficit. It would be short lived as Jamir Ferebee led Oswego on a 11-0 run of their own to secure the victory.
The seniors were the star performers for the Lakers as Ivey had a career high 22 points and six rebounds. Ian Schupp (13) and Ferebee (10) also reached double-figures in points.
Oswego and Geneseo will meet again on Tuesday in Geneseo at 7 pm. The winner of the contest will move on to the second round of the SUNYAC Championship.
