Oswego State women’s soccer goaltender Emma Allen was named the SUNYAC defensive player of the week. Against Brockport last Friday, the sophomore surrendered only one goal while playing the full 90 minutes. The following day in the Lakers’ win over nationally ranked Geneseo, she notched ten saves, just four shy of her career-high. Her efforts against the Knights also gave her her third shutout of the year.
With 49 saves this season, Allen is currently in a tie for fourth in the SUNYAC. She will be back in action along with the rest of the Lakers on Saturday when they travel to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons.

New York State Plastic Bag Law In Effect
New York State passed a law banning plastic bags on March 1st of this year. However, the state will not begin implementing fines on retailers until at least April 1st. Most stores are switching to paper bags, but these tend to come at a charge because they are more expensive than the previously used single-use plastic bags.
Bosco’s manager. Theresa Himes, says the local grocery store has also began selling reusable bags to customers “We discontinued the plastic ones. We’re using paper bags for some people that don’t have the reusable or don’t want to purchase them.”
Customers are encouraged to bring their own bags when shopping, to not only reduce waste but money, as well. If anyone is in need of any reusable bags, they can stop by City Hall to pick some up for free.

“Meet the Composer” Drumming Workshop in CNY Arts Center
FULTON – The CNY Arts Center will host a drumming workshop in collaboration with the Society for New Music on March 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. The workshop is open to everyone, and the center recommends people to bring any hand percussion instruments that they own.
Diane Jones, the main presenter of the event, is a composer, as well as a percussionist for the SU Brazilian Ensemble Samba Laranja. She also hosted a show on WCNY-FM, Central New York’s Classic Radio Station, and has performed with Mélomanie, The Relâche Ensemble, The Da Capo Chamber Players and Flautet.
“We are honored to host Diane Jones and to have had Cheryl Wilkins-Mitchell share this wonderful opportunity with us,” said executive director Nancy Fox. “We hope everyone will seize the chance for an afternoon of drumming fun!”
The event is being held in the CNY Arts Center, located on 357 State Street. The workshop will cost a modest fee, and pre-registration is encouraged.

Snow, freezing temperatures pose challenges for car owners

OSWEGO, N.Y.– Snow, ice and the freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on drivers throughout the winter months.
Oswego student Ian Padgett said he was a victim of a winter-related car accident last year and that it was a lack of traction from his car’s worn out tires got him into trouble.
“I hit my brakes and my wheels locked up; I just kept sliding,” said Padgett, “I messed up my passenger door and shattered the window. I had to get a brand new door.”
A&P Automotive manager Mike Silliman said having a set of winter tires on a car is essential to maintaining traction on icy conditions and avoiding accidents.
“The things you gotta think about with tires, it’s not just taking off. It’s your breaking and your cornering, that’s where the accidents happen,” Silliman said.
Salting roads can prevent ice buildup but can provoke fast-spreading rust throughout a car’s body and frame. Silliman said he recommends a thorough, weekly wash to keep a car free from salt, and ultimately free from dangerous rust.
Silliman said he also recommends packing a small survival kit in the car, in case of mechanical issues stranding a car and its owner.
Essential items in a winter car kit can include the following.
- jumper cables
- a warm blanket
- change of clothes
- shovel
- a flashlight
