The Oswego State field hockey team suffered their fifth straight loss after falling to Oneonta, 5-1 on Senior Day. After the defeat, the Lakers drop to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the SUNYAC while the Red Dragons move to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
In just the eighth minute of the contest, Oneonta’s Carissa Warren opened the scoring to put her team up 1-0. By the end of the period, the Red Dragons were carrying a 2-0 lead into halftime. Oswego’s lone score came in the 41st minute off an empty net goal by Katie Reynolds. However, it would not be enough as Oneonta would add three more in the second half. In her last start as a Laker at Laker Turf Stadium, goalie Sarita Charap had 16 saves.
The Lakers will look to end their regular season on a high note when they travel to St. John Fisher on Tuesday for a 5 pm contest.

Oswego Theater Department Presents “Dead Man’s Cell Phone”
On November 20th, on a Wednesday, Oswego Theatre Department premieres their play “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” originally written by Sara Ruhl.
This play, written in the early 2000s, focuses on the significance of human interaction and how technology plays a huge part in our daily lifestyle.
Based on the playwright’s personal life, important topics such as mortality, interactions, relationships, technology, and more are all present in the show.
With a small cast, in a total of 8 cast members and all in different years, they are putting on a absurdus play, which will put the topics in more of a comedic, interactive and exciting concept.
Ahmanee Simmons, Director of the play and senior tells her experience directing and the significance of the play. “Dead Man’s Cell Phone was definitely to highlight the human connection and the way we have kind of, sort of, lost that…And with the use of cell phones and technology, I kind of wanted to highlight that. But I also wanted to highlight the false perception of life that we get through social media and stuff like that. ” She said. “We have moved from that paper culture kind of society before and now, to this very digital, more efficient way to live our lives, and I think now it is about finding the balance between the two. Right now, everything is more digital, which is good as this does help us be more efficient as individuals in work, school, or social life, but there is also that boundary where we let it control our lives. This is also something that we address in Dead Man’s Cell Phone.” She also said.
Giovanni Rodriguez, the assistant director of the play also commented about the production. “Working with the cast has been great. I enjoy working with my director, Ahmanee Simmons. With the play itself, I believe the moral of the story is that we are all disconnected in our own ways and a simple ‘hello’ or ‘how are you’ can connect the most unlikely people in an instant. This is really about disconnection and what we don’t do due to technology. [In this play], I believe is going to open people’s eyes ” He said.

The play will take place in Tyler Hall’s Lab Theatre and will extend from November 20th to November 23rd.

Oswego State Students Offer Free Tax Filing

Oswego, NY- Students in Oswego State’s MBA program volunteered their time to do free income tax reports for both students and members of the Oswego community.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) has been a part of the Oswego State campus for over ten years. The VITA program assists students who are new to doing taxes on their own as well as community members.
According to a press release, the Oswego VITA program received a score of 100 percent in quality site requirements in its IRS field audit.
VITA on-site program coordinator Kevin Kania says tax forms are sent by the students to the IRS electronically. If there are any questions or concerns about a form, the IRS will contact them.
“Last year we had over a 99 percent approval rating, which means over 99 percent of the returns we prepare were accepted by the IRS which means we did them correctly and there were no issues or questions for us,” he said.
According to City-Data, the median household income in Oswego was $39,632 in 2015. Many residents fit the requirement for VITA’s minimum income, bringing in many tax forms for student volunteers to file.
“Last year we preformed over 400 returns and this year we’re on track to get over 400 returns throughout the whole semester,” Kania said.
The last day to file taxes is Apr. 18.

Former SUNY Oswego Professor Killed During American Military Operation
On April 23, 2015, former SUNY Oswego professor Dr. Warren Weinstein was killed in an United States counterterrorism operation, the White House announced Wednesday.
According to an email sent out to students and staff of the university, Dr. Weinstein left Oswego in 1979 to work with U.S. aid for people in developing countries. He was abducted more than three and a half years ago in Pakistan, and it is reported that he was inadvertently killed during a U.S. operation in the area.
In a statement made by SUNY Oswego President Deborah Stanley, she expressed Weinstein’s devotion and character, saying, “Dr. Weinstein devoted his life to making the world a better place. He left us to serve others in some of the world’s most impoverished and troubled regions. His life was an inspiration that will not die. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and colleagues.”
Dr. Weinstein’s wife also made a statement in which she stated that the ultimate blame belongs to those that abducted him, saying, “the cowardly actions of those who took Warren captive and ultimately to the place and time of his death are not in keeping with Islam and they will have to face their God to answer for their actions.”
The White House and President Obama have since issued statements regarding their sorrows towards the situation and Dr. Weinstein’s family.
