SUNY Oswego and community to perform ‘Sleeping Beauty Waltz’

OSWEGO, NY– The College Community Orchestra and dancers from both SUNY Oswego and the community will come together this Sunday, December 3, for a Winter fine arts performance.
The College Community Orchestra and dancers from the community will be performing Tchaikovsky’s ‘Sleeping Beauty Waltz.’ The dancers range from ages 4 to 21 years old. The Orchestra will also play other popular and classical selections.
SUNY Oswego Music Professor and Orchestral Director Dr. Juan F. La Manna said they wanted to give the “talented dancers both in the college and in the community” a chance to perform.
The “Sleeping Beauty Waltz” will be performed in Tyler Hall’s Waterman Theater at 3PM this Sunday, December 3. Admission is free. For more information, contact the SUNY Oswego Music Department by email at music@oswego.edu or by phone at 315-312-2130.

Port City Co-Op Antique Store

Port City Co-Op is an antique store that is hidden on West Second Street in downtown Oswego. The store celebrated its two year anniversary on Tuesday, November 1. Linda Demassi had the idea to open up Port City Co-Op and help bring more local businesses to Oswego.
Originally the store opened with ten vendors but now there are 37. With more vendors selling their items, the store needed to be expanded and that is when the owners of Port-City bought out the soap store that is located nextdoor.
Antiques and unique items are not the only reason why people shop here. Mary Waite is a regular at Port City and says she loves all the different items because it brings back nostalgic memories. It reminds her of her childhood.
Linda Demassi encourages people to shop local because, “it’s huge to shop local, for the economy, the city. Shopping local is huge to keep the small businesses”
Port City Co-Op is opened on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11am to 5pm, Thursday to Friday from 11am to 6pm, Saturday from 11am to 5pm and Sunday from 11am to 3pm.

Plaque commemorates WWI veterans of 100th anniversary of the armistice
OSWEGO, NY — Veterans’ Day 2018 marked a historic time for SUNY Oswego. The brave men and women who fought for our country overseas were officially immortalized in way of a memorial plaque near Sheldon Hall at SUNY Oswego.
SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley had expressed her utmost sincerity towards this impactful memento and stressed the importance of gratitude for our rights and freedoms as citizens as a result of the armed forces’ bravery and tenacity.
“These were individuals who did not fight on our soil,” President Stanley said. “They went to represent America. They went to fight to guarantee and defend democracy, and to make our way of life insured.”
The plaque honors twenty brave individuals from the Oswego Normal School, including student Jesse Merle Hewitt, who lost his life in France in 1918. Town Supervisor Rick Kaulfuss shared President Stanley’s sentiment and reverence towards those who died for our freedom.
“I think it’s really important to recognize that veterans have contributed a lot to our society in a lot of different ways, and they keep us free,” said Supervisor Kaulfuss.
The public may visit this plaque along Washington Boulevard, aside Sheldon Hall, at SUNY Oswego.
