OSWEGO — The Oswego State women’s soccer team wrapped up their season with a double-overtime loss to Hamilton College. Linsey Roth scored both goals for the Lakers with one of those coming off an assist by Chloe Lonergan while Oswego goalie Emma Allen had five saves in the match. The Lakers finished 6-8-3 on the season and finished ninth in the SUNYAC Conference.

Simzer shines as Lakers take down Keystone
LA PLUME, P.A. — The Lakers stay undefeated as they routed Keystone College 5-1. 13 seconds into the contest Senior Kacie Simzer scored the first goal of the game for the Lakers with Kaitlyn Ahle assisting. The Lakers were tested early as they faced a situation that they have not been in all year which was a team scoring a goal, effectively ending their four game streak of not allowing a single goal. It took the Lakers only one minute and 11 seconds to score another goal as Simzer scored her second of the game. The rest of the second quarter was a defensive battle where both Oswego and Keystone combined for three penalty corner kicks and four goals. Goalie Erica Scheblein was given her first test of the year and she was ready for the challenge. After giving up a goal early in the game, Scheblein had blocked five shots from the 36:08 to the 43:21 mark. She finished the game with nine total saves, which is almost half of her season’s total. Oswego adjusted in every quarter of the game as within one minute and 20 seconds of the second half beginning Kailtyn Mastracco scored for the Lakers off of a penalty shot.
After Keystone changed goalies during the fourth quarter, Simzer tested if their new goalie was up to the task. Simzer tied the all-time record for goals in a game for the Lakers as she finished the day with four goals. Oswego finished the day with 21 shots on goal. Throughout the game, the Lakers took advantage of Keystone penalties as they had ten penalty corner kicks.
This marks the first time the Lakers have started 5-0 since the 2016-2017 season. The Lakers travel north to take on the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday, September 17th at 1:00 PM at North Country Field.

Oswego Buccaneers Boys Hockey Finishes 2021 Season
[et_pb_section admin_label=”section”] [et_pb_row admin_label=”row”] [et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text”]OSWEGO, N.Y. — A few months ago, a high school hockey season for the Oswego Buccaneers seemed very unlikely. However with a quick announcement allowing high schools to begin practices, the condensed season was going to occur and at a very rapid pace.
Oswego started off their season caught off guard by facing opponents they typically do not square off against but did this year due to the new COVID-19 enforced divisions based on location and not school size. Through the month of February, the Bucs would get three wins but also dealt six losses with two of them against a well known Division II favorite in Section III, the Skaneateles Lakers who went 14-0-2 this season.
It was a quick turn around in March as Oswego was able to win their first four games of the month convincingly outscoring their opponents 22 to 4 in those four matchups, as well as earning five wins and receiving only two losses in March. When head coach Kevin Ahern was asked what were some possible factors in the turnaround he did not hesitate.
“We have settled into some of the systems that we’re trying to implement… our puck movement has gotten much better, our d-zone has tightened up, and our goaltending is playing well,” Kevin Ahern said.
It was bittersweet for 6 seniors at the end of the season as they were fortunate enough to have a season but bid farewell to their high school hockey careers and home games at what they know as “The Fort”. With a large veteran core coming back, including eleven seniors in 2022; look for the Buccaneers to be hungry for a potential deep playoff run in Section III this upcoming season with their young determination and depth.

Women’s Basketball Season comes to an end against Brockport
OSWEGO, NY — Women’s Basketball played their final game of the season this past Saturday as the Lakers faced off against Brockport. The SUNYAC match up featured the Golden Eagles taking the victory 81-73. The two teams would only be separated by three points heading into the second quarter, but Brockport would start to pull away as the second half approached. Quincey Zimmerman was one of four Lakers to put up double digits in the points column as she led the team with 21 points scored. This loss puts the Lakers at 6-18 and only 2-16 in conference play. The team failed to make the SUNYAC playoffs as the group finished on a 14 game losing streak.
