OSWEGO — Regular season hockey returns to Suny Oswego as the Men’s hockey team will take the home ice in their season opener against Suny Cortland tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Lakers come in off of two impressive victories in exhibitions against Nazareth college and the Carleton Place Canadiens. The Lakers will look for contributions from Sophomore Tanner Spink who had a combined 3 goals in the 2 exhibitions and from Junior Mitch Emerson who had 2 goals in the exhibitions himself.

Lakers volleyball loses in SUNYAC championships
GENESEO, N.Y. – Oswego state volleyball team faced off against the Geneseo Knights on Tuesday afternoon for the first round of the SUNYAC Championships. The Lakers started off strong building a 3-1 lead over the knights. Both teams would go back and throughout the first half of the set. Geneseo would then take control later in the first set, increasing their lead to 7 over the Lakers.Oswego had many mistakes in the first half with 12 errors in the first set, 4 of which came from service errors. The Lakers had no answer and couldn’t get the lead back from the Knights as they took set 1 by a score of 25-17.
Geneseo continued to control the second set, establishing a 10-3 lead on the Lakers before a timeout by Oswego. The Lakers rallied back and cut the deficit to just 3 to the score 18-15. Oswego had no answers again falling in the second set by a score of 18-25. Emma Fiorentine led the Lakers with 4 kills in the second set and Mckenna Corbin added 7 more assists in set 2.
Oswego started off the third set stronger building a 5-0 lead on the Knights. The Knights would find their groove eventually and would come back and take the third set by a score of 25-20. In the set Fiorentine led the Lakers with 11 kills on the evening and Mckennaled with 29 assists and 14 digs. The Lakers were ultimately swept 3-0, ending their run for a SUNYAC Championship and their season.
Oswego State ends their season (17-11, 5-5 SUNYAC) and Geneseo will move on to the second round of the SUNYAC championships(12-11, 7-3 SUNYAC).

Oswego State Baseball Team Sweeps Plattsburgh State to Conclude Regular Season
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The #22 ranked Oswego State Baseball team finished the 2021 regular season victorious as they defeated Plattsburgh State in consecutive games on Sunday. The Lakers now move to 21-3 on the season and will look ahead towards their best-of-three semifinals matchup versus SUNY Oneonta.
Oswego was dominant in both contests, defeating the Cardinals 16-2 in game one and 13-3 in game two. The Lakers had 20 hits in the first game, led by Paul Tammaro and Dylan Frawley who each had three. Junior outfielder, Tim Shinto, had a great performance as he totaled 4 RBIs off 2 hits. Anthony Van Fossen also finished his season 4-0 after shutting out the Cardinals in five innings. Game two ended in similar fashion with Brendon Frank, Kyle Lauria, and Myles Felton combining for 7 hits in their final regular season game. Junior pitcher, Kieran Finnegan, finished his season 5-0 following his 4-inning performance. With Sunday’s victories, the Lakers improve their win streak vs the Cardinals to 15-0 dating back to 2014. Prior to the pair of games, the Oswego State Baseball team recognized ten seniors including Mike Di Salvo, Jake Terrill, Jonathan Luppens, Hunter Holliday, Ronald Loomis, Connor Stanton, Myles Felton, Kyle Lauria, Brendon Frank, and Dylan Frawley.
Oswego had previously locked up the #1 seed in the SUNYAC West division and will now set their focus on their upcoming playoff matchup versus Oneonta. The teams last played in a May 6th doubleheader resulting in a 19-5 Laker win and a 5-2 Red Dragon win. The best-of-three series is set for Saturday, May 15th starting at noon. The second game is scheduled for 3 p.m. an if necessary, game three will be played on Sunday at noon.

Field hockey wins on road with big fourth quarter
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Lakers travelled to Rochester to take on the Nazareth Golden Flyers on Tuesday night in a Oswego 3-1 win. Oswego’s offense would start out swinging in the first quarter with four shots attempted and three shots on goal from Simzer, Darcy and Delaney but none would make it to the back of the goal. The Lakers defense was in control in the first quarter by mostly keeping the ball in midfield which only allowed Nazareth to attempt one shot. Oswego would get their second penalty corner of the evening, just over three minutes into the second quarter (18:06) but the Laker’s were unable to capitalize as the defense by Nazareth didn’t allow Oswego to attempt a shot. Just over five minutes into the second, Nazareth would finally have their first shot on goal but Oswego goalkeeper Erica Scheblein would kick the ball out of bounds and record her first save of the night. The last 8 minutes of the quarter the Lakers were able to get some shots on goal with two coming from Kacie Simzer and one coming from Bryleigh Beauchat. Altogether Oswego would finish the first half with seven shots, four landing on goal with a halftime score of 0-0
At the start of the second half the Golden Flyers decided to make a change with their goalie and Oswego attacked. Oswego would record seven shots in the third quarter with none getting past the fresh new goalie. But all that changed in the fourth quarter when 46 minutes in the scoreless streak broke from a goal from sophomore Kate McNally assisted by Molly Darcy(46:19). The Lakers scored again 5 minutes later(51:37) off of a penalty goal from Kaitlyn Mastracco, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead. 15 seconds later Nazareth answered back with a goal from Hannah James(51:52) to bring the Oswego lead to only one. But Nazareth defense couldn’t stop the Lakers as Kacie Simzer would grab another goal for Oswego(55:06) assisted by Taylin Bauer to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead. Nazareth would have chances at the end to score, but the Laker’s defense held up and didn’t allow any more goals for Nazareth to hold on to the win. Oswego out shot Nazareth by a 19-9 margin and Erica Scheblein continues her great season with five saves on the night.
Oswego is now 7-6 on the season. The Lakers will now return home on Saturday for senior day in a conference matchup against the Brockport Golden Eagles.
