OSWEGO, NY — Earth Day 2019 marked a time of service for SUNY Oswego. Students from all across campus had united to take part in the “Shining Waters” Lakeside clean-up in celebration of the preservation of the earth. The Department of Community Services had sponsored the Lakeside cleanup, which took place at the very edge of Lake Ontario itself. Students collected trash and non-recyclables on the ground to dispose of and help to make a difference on campus.
“I feel like a lot of more people need to get involved, it needs to be put out there more,” student David Hagen said. “It’s actually pretty good that we’re actually helping our environment on its most important day.”
SUNY Oswego has already attempted to promote sustainability and proper disposal of materials on campus. The students hope that those on and off campus can still contribute to improving the campus community and the world for the better.
“We can all do, like, little cleanups like this. Like, this only takes about an hour to clean up just a little bit,” student Kristie Reitz said. “There’s parts in Oswego that need cleaning up that other students may not know about. Everybody could just do a little bit in their own area and that’ll make a big difference.”

Halloween in SUNY Oswego
by Sean Ryan, WTOP10-TVThe Oswego State community prepare for exciting and safe Halloween programs on campus. Events like Scalesburry is returning; a haunted house and Halloween extravaganza. There is also a Trick or Treat program going on in several of the residence halls on campus, this provides a safe and healthy environment for local kids to trick-or-treat.\As per recent tradition Scales and Waterbury hall organize a Halloween program involving a haunted house, plenty of food, and a screening of several Halloween themed movies. What will be different this year is that Scalesburry Haunted House will take place in Lee Hall instead of Scales Hall. As for the resident halls, Waterbury will have food and Scales will be screening horror movies. The haunted house will be staffed by students and with help of several on campus entities such as Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the Oswego Theatre Department. Both will mainly help with decorating Lee Hall. This event is part of an initiate on campus to provide safe non-drinking alternatives for college students. This will take place on Friday, October 28 from 8pm to 12 pm.A safe Halloween program will take place in Funelle hall, Hart hall and other Lakeside residence halls on Sunday October 30. Local kids will be allowed to come through the buidlings and trick-or-treat. There will also be a Halloween party for children in Morano Campus Center. This is another safe alternative to roaming the cold streets at night and gives college students the chance to get better involved in the Oswego community. Trick-or-treating starts at 11 am and goes until 3 pm.Halloween looks to be an eventful time here at SUNY Oswego. -
Oswego Gets Back on Track
The Oswego men’s baseball team defeated the Rochester Yellowjackets yesterday in dramatic fashion. The Lakers were trailing heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but junior infielder Brandon Nicholson hit a double to left that drove in two runs and tied the game at seven. The hitting was contagious as later in that inning three consecutive Lakers put the ball in play, extending their lead by four. That lead was more than enough for the Lakers to pick up the win as they move to 17-6 on the season. Oswego plays host to conference opponent Brockport in a three game series that begins Friday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for noon. -
New SUNY Oswego Assistant Professor Performs
A new SUNY Oswego Assistant Professor introduced herself to campus in a special way: by enlightening students with her violin.
Ahreum Kim, the campus’s new assistant professor in high strings and musicology, performed with Professor Robert Auler in front of an audience in Sheldon Ballroom. The sonatas consisted mostly of classical and romantic times in music.
Professor Kim not only had to perform the music, but also make sure that her movements accurately portrayed the specific emotions of the songs.
Reporter David Hermanovitch talked with Kim, who told him that to portray the emotion, she had to change her expressions at the same time, which is very tiring during the performance.
Overall, the performance was a creative way for Kim to begin her tenure with SUNY Oswego.
