OSWEGO — Men’s Hockey starts their 55th hockey season this Saturday with their annual Teal Night game against Carleton Place. The Lakers look to start their season at Marano Campus Center after their 10-day trip overseas this past August. The Lakers swept their European competitors in their first ever trip over the pond. Oswego was ranked 3rd overall in the SUNYAC preseason poll behind rival Geneseo, who beat them last season in the SUNYAC Championship. New Laker captain Josh Zizek is looking to have another outstanding year after he recorded 25 points his junior year. This match up will be the first of two exhibition games for the team before their first regular season game against SUNY Cortland. Oswego hockey fans can purchase tickets online or at the box office. Simzer shines as Lakers take down Keystone
LA PLUME, P.A. — The Lakers stay undefeated as they routed Keystone College 5-1. 13 seconds into the contest Senior Kacie Simzer scored the first goal of the game for the Lakers with Kaitlyn Ahle assisting. The Lakers were tested early as they faced a situation that they have not been in all year which was a team scoring a goal, effectively ending their four game streak of not allowing a single goal. It took the Lakers only one minute and 11 seconds to score another goal as Simzer scored her second of the game. The rest of the second quarter was a defensive battle where both Oswego and Keystone combined for three penalty corner kicks and four goals. Goalie Erica Scheblein was given her first test of the year and she was ready for the challenge. After giving up a goal early in the game, Scheblein had blocked five shots from the 36:08 to the 43:21 mark. She finished the game with nine total saves, which is almost half of her season’s total. Oswego adjusted in every quarter of the game as within one minute and 20 seconds of the second half beginning Kailtyn Mastracco scored for the Lakers off of a penalty shot.
After Keystone changed goalies during the fourth quarter, Simzer tested if their new goalie was up to the task. Simzer tied the all-time record for goals in a game for the Lakers as she finished the day with four goals. Oswego finished the day with 21 shots on goal. Throughout the game, the Lakers took advantage of Keystone penalties as they had ten penalty corner kicks.
This marks the first time the Lakers have started 5-0 since the 2016-2017 season. The Lakers travel north to take on the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday, September 17th at 1:00 PM at North Country Field.

Men’s basketball dominates Red Dragons on senior day
OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Lakers men’s basketball team looked to continue their win streak to 17 this past weekend when they hosted the Cortland Red Dragons for senior night on Saturday evening. The first half ended up being controlled by the Lakers but Cortland held Oswego tough in the first half. After the first ten minutes the score was 13-10 Lakers until Jamal Achille became the offensive spark for Oswego and started a Laker 6-0 where lone senior Devin Green chipped in and added four points over that same stretch. After that run the Lakers exploded on offense going on a 41-18 run the last 10 minutes of the first half shooting similarly from the field and from three-point range (58.06% FG%, 58.33% 3PT%). Oswego got out ahead and had a 54-28 at the half.Cortland tried to start off the half stronger as reigning SUNY-AC player of the year Austin Grunder made a couple big shots to start for the red dragons. But it wouldn’t last long as Kaleb Cook took over during a four-minute stretch during the second half, scoring ten points, while Cortland could only get 4. By that point Cortland couldn’t get anything to go and Oswego would cruise to a 102-62 for their 7th game over 100 points in this season. The Lakers also keep their 17 game streak alive, not losing since the loss to Brockport at home in December. Jeremiah Sparks and Devin Green both had 14 points for the game in a great shooting game for Oswego, but the game was led on Oswego’s side by Kaleb Cook, whose ten point outburst in the second half helped him score 16 for the game. Cortland’s Austin Grunder ended up with another double double in this game and was the only Cortland player that was a positive in this game leading all scorers with 24. Oswego’s bench outscored the Red Dragons 47-18. and the Lakers dominated in the paint beating Cortland 48-10.
Coach Leone gets his 300th career win as a coach and the Lakers move to 21-2,(15-1 SUNYAC). The men’s team will travel to Brockport, NY to face Brockport on Friday, February 17 in a revenge game as Brockport was Oswego’s only previous SUNYAC loss.

Oswego State softball wraps up 2022 season
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team finished their 2022 regular season this past weekend with 2 conference doubleheaders as SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo traveled to SUNY Oswego’s campus. The Lakers were unable to find the win column this weekend and finished the campaign with an overall record of 9-26 and 4-14 in SUNYAC play. Oswego State was eliminated from post season contention as the Lakers finished 9th in the conference standings, just above SUNY Potsdam.
On Friday, the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport traveled into Oswego, New York to take on the Lakers in a doubleheader. Game 1 finished with a 9-4 score in favor of SUNY Brockport after the Golden Eagles score first in the top of the 3rd. Oswego State would answer with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning but the Golden Eagles ran away with the contest the rest of the way. In Game 2, Oswego State struck first in the bottom of the opening inning with 1 run. The teams would trade runs in the 2nd inning before the Lakers took a commanding lead in the 4th inning. The Golden Eagles would have a monster 5th inning with 6 runs scored to take the lead and the group never looked back from there.
The following day, the Lakers would honor their seniors in a doubleheader against the top team in the SUNYAC, the Knights from SUNY Geneseo. The Lakers were swept by the Knights as SUNY Geneseo won a close Game 1 by a score of 8-7. Oswego State would take a commanding 7-1 lead early in the contest before SUNY Geneseo reeled back in the Lakers. The contest would go to extra innings as the Knights found the winning run in the top of the 9th inning.
It would be another 1 run game in the second stretch of the doubleheader. Oswego State unfortunately were on the wrong of the score line as the Knights came away with a 6-5 win in the final game of the regular season. SUNY Geneseo would snag 4 runs over the course of a few innings to take an early lead. Oswego State would tally 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game. In the final inning, SUNY Geneseo would score 2 more runs while the Lakers could only manage to find 1 run and would fall in their last contest of the 2022 campaign.
Laker Zoe Mennig would lead the Oswego State squad at the plate for the 2nd season in a row. The senior catcher finished with a .442 batting average and 42 hits over the course of 95 at bats. Fionna Higgins followed up Mennig with a .300 batting average. Higgins was also the top pitcher in the bullpen this season with the lowest ERA which was 4.72 at the end of the season. The junior finished with a 6-8 record at the end of the season. The Oswego State softball team will return next season in the spring for the 2023 season.
