OSWEGO, NY— Earlier this week, students had the opportunity of meeting and speaking with Zully Ramirez. She is currently an investigative news reporter at Chicago Telemundo. The event was hosted by the PRSSA here at SUNY Oswego and was open to the general public.
Zully Ramirez originally hails from Guatemala, but she moved to Harlem, NY at a young age. Many students were intrigued by her success story and her honesty about being an investigative news reporter.
After the event, I had the opportunity of interviewing Zully Ramirez and asked her what she would tell present and future students of SUNY Oswego. Her response was, “I would just say persevere. Persevere, listen to advice and put your heart and soul into everything that you do. Because when you persevere and listen to advice, and put your heart and soul into everything that you do, you can make it.”

Linda Cohn Earns a Sub at the Oswego Sub Shop
OSWEGO, N.Y. – Linda Cohn, the Oswego alumnus and sportscaster celebrated her 5,000 episode on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Sunday. Cohn became the first SportsCenter anchor to reach such a mark. Cohn has been a trailblazer for women in sports, but there was still one goal she longed for. Getting a sub named after her at the famed Oswego Sub Shop.
The staple in downtown Oswego is one of the most exclusive clubs for Oswego alumni like Cohn. From Al Roker to Steve Levy, the Oswego Sub Shop is where SUNY Oswego graduates come to be enshrined, in a sandwich.
When skimming the menu, Cohn’s name was nowhere to be seen, but one fan and fellow alumnus is looking to change that.
“She was like, actually I haven’t reached that celebrity status yet because I don’t have a sub at the Oswego sub shop,” said Paul Esden.
Esden, a producer at ESPN radio in Syracuse, N.Y. spoke to Cohn and started the trending topic.
Paul said, “I made the hash tag, I made the meme, and I was like let’s just see what happens. Cohn’s hash tag #GetCohnASub, has Oswego alumni rallying around her and the sub shop making plans.
“We’d definitely get her input and design it accordingly,” said William Green, the once owner of the Oswego Sub Shop. He sold the family restaurant to his son just a few years back.
Green said, “I had no idea that she was that popular or did that many shows.”
He remembers when Al Roker and Steve Levy got their subs and hopes Cohn will be the same kind of ambassador, they’ve been.
“They never come in here asking for anything, they’re doing it just out of the gratitude and respect of the sub shop,” said Green.
Odds are Cohn shouldn’t have to wait long. Green added, “I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a sub named after her, within the week.”
Cohn’s much-deserved sub is waiting. The Sub Shop even has a spot reserved. -
Phat Kat Foods

Phat Kat Foods has been in Oswego and in business for only nearly a month and business is booming. The food trucks are owned and operated by veterans Ben Booney and Arthur Webb.
There are currently two food trucks on the road; the taco truck and the sausage truck. By the end of the year they are expected to have a total of four food trucks and an expantion into Onadaga County.
The idea to open a food truck business came to the two after Arthur’s step son had come back from French culinary school in San Jose. They wanted to open up a brick and martar but food trucks are a big thing in the West coast so they just took that idea and ran with it.
Their menu for Phat Kat Tacos varies from fish tacos to beer braised carnitas all no matter the taco all are spicy and great. The Sausage Truck menu has everything from a hot dog to what they call a Kat Nip sandwich which contains pork sausage stuffed with bacon and cheese.
Booney was the brains for the name of the food trucks Phat Kat Foods. It evolved from fat guys to fat boys, he went with the PHAT Pretty Hot And Tempting, the Kat came from when they woked at Novellas Booney called everyone Kat.
Their motto “feed the beast” is aimed at delivering quality food at a reasonable price to feed the hungry beast in you. Their location changes everyday so check out their Facebook page for their daily location and updates!

Electroacoustic Concert

Oswego, NY- On March 2 nd and 3 rd , Oswego State welcomed Electroacoustic Composer Mark Snyder, Soprano Paige Naylor, and harpist Becky Brown.
Mark specializes in mixing ambient multimedia works along with rich storytelling. The work he produces contains meaning in many different forms including events from his own life.
Mark performs with various instruments featuring the clarinet, tuba, accordion, piano, and guitar.
“When I have feeling that I want to express, I don’t always express them in words as well as I can in sound and life so that’s what I like to experiment with trying to communicate with people with what I sonically represent of human emotions and characters so I love doing it I wouldn’t want to do anything else,” Snyder said.
Cara Thompson was one of the audience members amazed with Snyder’s performance.
“It’s just amazing the combination of technology and video and the music was just incredibly compelling and powerful,” she said.
Snyder and his crew will continue performing all around while creating new pieces of work for people to enjoy.
