OSWEGO — Women’s Basketball drops their first home game of the season to UW Superior Friday night. The 49-77 final featured the Yellowjackets scoring 48 points by halftime compared to the 15 by Oswego. The Laker offense would come alive in the third quarter as transfer Sydni Eure would score 10 points out of her game total 15 to bring some life back into the Lakers. The team would outscore the Yellowjackets in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough. Oswego moves forward into the Max Ziel Tournament tomorrow afternoon to play Morrisville in the consolation game. Tip off will be at 1 p.m. at Max Ziel. Womens hockey gets first win this weekend
OSWEGO, N.Y. – It was an entertaining weekend for women’s hockey as the Lakers were able to pick up a win this weekend despite suffering a loss the night prior. The Lakers headed to Potsdam this past Friday to take on the Bears in what was a big matchup for them. Despite a close game the Lakers just weren’t able to get the job done in a 2-1 loss. It was a stalemate in the first period as both teams remained scoreless at the buzzer. The second period is where things got out of hands for the Lakers as Potsdam was able to put two goals on the board and the Lakers just did not have an answer. Looking to rally in the third sophomore Ashlyn McGrath scored a goal capitalizing on an early third period power-play. The Lakers could not crawl out of the Bears trap they set up in the second as they left Potsdam with a one goal loss. Despite this loss the Lakers bounced back the following day.Saturdays contest ended with a much better result for the Lakers as they took home a big SUNYAC win and their first win of the season against Canton on the road. This game was a great way for the Lakers to get back on track heading into some big upcoming games. They took the lead late in the first thanks to a goal by Myah Booth in the first period. The Lakers traded goals with Canton in the second Avery Webster responded back to a Canton goal off the assists from Rheya Zemlak and Ashlyn McGrath. The Lakers would just pour it on in the third when McGrath tallied another goal on the weekend. McGrath had a phenomenal two games for the Lakers. In the Last two minutes of the third period Kyleigh Grugin put the Nail in the coffin scoring the fourth and final goal for Oswego. The Lakers look to keep this momentum rolling as they take on Morrisville College this Friday, November 11th at 4:00 PM on the road!

Oswego High School Girls Bucaneers Hockey: Julia Roman commits to WNE
OSWEGO, NY — Wednesday Morning, June 3rd, the Western New England Women’s Hockey team announced the commitment of Oswego Buccaneer Julia Roman. The Oswego native attended Oswego High School and played on the Oswego High School Girls Hockey team along with the school’s soccer team. The Senior was named Captain this season for the Bucs and led the group to a 9-8 overall record and finished fourth in the season standings. The team would fall to the Section III Champions, the Clinton Warriors, in the semifinals of Sectionals. Roman, a right handed shot, would tally 7 points (2 goals & 5 assists) over the course of her senior season and led defenseman in points along side freshman Mia Fierro. The defenseman recorded 17 points over the past three seasons in a Buccaneers uniform.
Western New England University is located just outside Springfield, Massachusetts, and is a part of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, who will now recognize Women’s Hockey with a conference championship. The Golden Bear announced last June that the college would start a Women’s Hockey team at the start of the 2020-21 season. The Division III program would join the new conference along with Suffolk University. A majority of this conference is made up of members of the CHC, the Colonial Hockey Conference. The CHC will has recently disbanded after the creation of the newer conference. This conference winner will get an automatic bid to the Division III Women’s Hockey Championship. The Oswego State Lakers have yet to play a CHC opponent in program history, so the return of Julia Roman to Oswego to play against the green and gold is unlikely. WTOP 10 will continue to deliver updates on both the Oswego High School Buccaneers and the Oswego High School Girls Buccaneers Hockey teams next season as both teams currently prepare for the 2020-21 season.

Oswego State women’s basketball finds success this weekend

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s basketball was able to come out with one win out of their two games played this weekend. Their first matchup this weekend was against SUNY Oneonta Friday night. Oneonta was heavily favored to win this contest with a much better record than the Lakers. The Lakers proved that they were no easy task as they stunned Oneonta with a three point victory. Oswego’s stellar offensive performance from the three point line combined with their lights out defense ultimately sealed Oneonta’s fate. Freshman Shania Iglesias continued to prove herself as a star of this Lakers team, dropping sixteen points with nine coming from the three point line. She was the Lakers lead scorer and it wasn’t close. Other key contributors were senior Danielle Caivana with eight points, and freshman Diamond Pickett with eight. Down early in the first, Iglesias entered the game and was on an absolute tear helping the Lakers take back the lead and maintain it throughout the contest. They were firing on all cylinders and despite only winning by three points, had an answer to everything Oneonta threw their way. Deep in the fourth when it mattered the most the Lakers held Oneonta scoreless the last three minutes to put this game away. The Lakers went on to host SUNY New Paltz the following night.
The Lakers looked to keep their momentum rolling after their impressive victory Friday. Unfortunately they were on the losing side this time. Another very close game against a high seeded New Paltz resulted in a five point loss for the lakers. At the end of the first the Lakers had it all tied up at ten a peice. The next quarter was where things started to get bumpy as the Hawks went into the half with a six point lead. Senior Danielle Caivana had a star studded performance for the Lakers with dropping nineteen points, for buckets coming from the three point line. Caivana continues to finish out her time here as a Laker with great performances. The other top scorer was Shania Iglesias yet again with eleven points. Heading into the fourth quarter the game was within four points. despite the Lakers valiant effort to come out with a win, they ultimately couldn’t get the job done in a hard fought battle. The Lakers host the Potsdam Bears this Friday in the Max Zeil Gymnasium. Catch the game at 5:30 on WTOP10!
