OSWEGO, NY — The Lakers fell short to Saint Mary’s University Friday night due to a stellar performance in net by Al Rogers for the Cardinals. The 1-0 score line featured Oswego out shooting the Cardinals 30 to 22 and dominating in the face off circle 38 to 17 thanks to forward Anthony Passero. This loss is the first of the season in the Marano Campus Center and snaps their three game win streak that came out of SUNYAC play. Moving forward, the tenth ranked Lakers continue in the Pathfinder/Oswego State Hockey Classic tomorrow night against the #9 University of New England Nor’easters who fell to #14 Williams College earlier in the day. The Cardinals and Ephs will do battle at 4 pm for the Pathfinder Championship.

Men’s Hockey rolls through Roos
OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Hockey returned home Saturday night after taking a lost in Cortland the night before. Oswego welcomed in the Canton Roos into the Marano Campus Center as the Lakers are 11-0 all time against the Roos. Canton came into the game 9-5 overall as Oswego was 8-8. The Lakers would finish the 1st period with four goals as freshman Alex DiCarlo tallied a goal and 3 assists in the game as he buried the second Laker goal on the Powerplay. Senior Michael Gillespie also tallied four points in the win. Netminder Steven Kozikoski secured his first career colligate win as he recorded 19 saves after only allowing two goals in the game. The Lakers would come away with an 8-2 victory to stay undefeated against the Roos.
Oswego looks ahead to a road trip to the north country this coming weekend as the Lakers have two SUNYAC match ups. Plattsburgh will be the first task Friday night before traveling to Potsdam the following evening. Plattsburgh recently tied Geneseo on the road as the Cardinals sit at 3-4-2 in conference play. Potsdam sits directly below Plattsburgh as the Bears have a conference record of 3-7-1. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. in Plattsburgh Friday night.

Men’s hockey finishes preseason 2-0
OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s hockey team took to the ice of the Deborah F. Stanley Ice Arena for the second and final preseason matchup on Saturday. They took on the Carleton Place Canadiens, a junior program, from the Central Canadian Hockey League.
The first period quickly showed the difference between the two sides. Less than six minutes into the first period of play, the Lakers found the scoreboard first, freshman Matt McQuade finding the back of the net for his first unofficial goal as a Laker, as stats don’t count for these games. The assist coming from Connor Sleeth. Less than three minutes later Oswego would find the back of the net again. Garrett Clegg would steal one off of a defenseman at the Lakers offensive blue line and take it himself burying it past the goalie on for an unassisted goal. The first period ended 2-0.
In the second period the Canadiens seemed to hold their own a bit more, but that didn’t stop the Lakers from scoring. With eight minutes to go in the second period the Lakers had beautiful tic-tac-toe style goal. Trent Grimshaw carried the puck across the blue line in a three-on-two opportunity. He sent a pass across to Daniel Colabufo who quickly sent it back across net to a cutting AJ Ryan who buried the goal. The Canadiens would answer though. With three minutes remaining, a breakout chance resulted in a beautiful goal, shooting from right to left and off the bar past net-minder Cal Schell.
In the third period the Lakers turned the after burners back on. Less than four minutes into the period, Tommy Cahill won a face-off in the Lakers offensive zone and sent it back to captain Ryan Bunka who buried it through traffic for the Lakers fourth goal of the game. The Lakers fifth goal was another tic-tac-toe goal that would end with defenseman Troy Robillard deking the goalie and putting it behind him for goal number five. The Lakers sixth and final goal of the game came off the stick of Robillard once again. This time he sniped one from the blue line by his own bench, a one-timer that would go bar-down. This goal coming just nine-minutes into the third period. The Canadiens would pull one goal back before the end of the game making the final score of 6-2.
Oswego starts their regular season play starting next weekend. The Lakers head to Geneva, N.Y. on Friday night to take on the Hobart University Statesmen. Hobart was ranked #5 in the preseason poll, Oswego was ranked #13. On Saturday the Lakers have their home opener on Saturday taking on #9 Elmira university. A Look Ahead: Oswego State men’s hockey prepares for Oswego Hockey Classic
OSWEGO, N.Y — The Oswego State men’s hockey team heads into the Clarion/Best Western Oswego Hockey Classic on a five game win streak with an overall record of 8-3-1. The tournament welcomes three other teams into the Deborah F. Stanley Arena and Convocation Hall. SUNY Canton, Skidmore College, and nationally ranked #4 Augsburg University will join the Lakers in the tournament this season.
During the 2019-20 season, the Lakers lost to the eventual tournament winners, St. Mary’s Cardinals, in the first round of the tournament. On Saturday, Oswego State would fall to the University of New England Nor’easters 4-3 in the the consolation match up during that year’s tournament.
In this year’s tournament, the Lakers are set to take on the #4 Augsburg University Auggies in the first round Saturday night with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m. on the SUNY Oswego campus. This is the fifth nationally ranked match up for the Oswego State Lakers this season. So far, the Lakers have not beaten a nationally ranked opponent.
The Auggies and Lakers have only met once prior to Saturday night’s game. On January 3rd, 2009, these two teams met for the first time in Oswego during the Oswego Hockey Classic. The Lakers were able to take the 5-2 victory and send the Auggies back to Minnesota after defeating them in the tournament championship game. Oswego State finished 18-8-1 that season and lost to Plattsburgh State in the SUNYAC Championship finals.
Augsburg University travels to New York after dropping two games during the week in Michigan. One of those games was an exhibition contest against the United State U-18 Development team that finished with a score line of 6-1 in favor of the under eighteen team. The second game was against the number one team in the nation, the Adrian College Bulldogs. The Bulldogs defeated the Auggies 5-2 last night to continue to assert their dominance over NCAA Division III men’s hockey. The Auggies still have a 9-2 record heading into this weekend, one of the better records in Division III hockey.
The Saturday afternoon match up has the SUNY Canton Kangaroos facing off against the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds. The 4:00 p.m. puck drop features the SUNY Canton squad that has an overall record of 3-3-1. The Kangaroos has played less games then most due to postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On the other side of the ice, the Thoroughbreds come into the contest with the 6-4-1 record and a 3-3-1 conference record. On Sunday, puck drop is set for 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for the two games. WTOP 10 will have the broadcasts for all four games this weekend in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena.
