OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Basketball improved to 8-2 Friday night after the Lakers defeated Fredonia 67-44 as the team capitalized in the second half. The Laker defense solidified the win by holding the Blue Devils to 21 points in the half. The Oswego win was headed by junior Liam Sanborn who led on offense with 15 points along with senior Joe Sullivan who tallied 14 points. The Lakers improved to 2-1 in the SUNYAC conference as Oswego will finish out their season with conference game play. The team has another SUNYAC match up Saturday afternoon against Buffalo State at 4 p.m. in the Max Ziel Gymnasium.

Oswego Women’s Basketball falls to New Paltz Hawks
OSWEGO, NY — Women’s Basketball falls into an eight game losing streak after dropping a SUNYAC match up against New Paltz 68-42. The Lakers fell behind early in the first quarter before the team outscored the Hawks in the second quarter 11 to 10. This would not be enough though as the Lakers would get outscored 42 to 24 in the second half to receive their tenth conference loss of the season. Junior Raiven Encarnacion led the Lakers with 13 points as she netted four field goals and four free throws. Oswego now sits in last place in the SUNYAC standings with only a .167 win percentage as the team still has six more conference games remaining. The Lakers will travel to Cortland on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip off before traveling back home for a game against Plattsburgh the following weekend.

Oswego mens soccer loses in a tough defensive game
OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s team hosted undefeated Elmira college from the empire 8 conference on Tuesday night. This game was a highly defensive affair as both teams only had 6 shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of the game. A poor throw in by Oswego led to a free kick in the 21st minute as Gavin Wise of Elmira pressured a lakers defender trying to receive the throw. A lakers player then tried to redirect the ball to his teammate but Lutho Mlunguza of Elmira intercepted it and quickly got the ball to Wise up the field. As Wise tried to settle the pass, Ryan Contreras of the lakers stepped across and sent Wise to the ground. The referee would then give Elmira a free kick that Mlunguza would kick into the top left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Lakers would push hard the rest of the game to fight back as they out shot Elmira College 13 to 4 in the second half. The Lakers had their best shot with just 25 seconds left in the game when Oswego’s Ha Joon Lee blasted a shot from around 20 yards out that forced Elmira goalie Zachary Raffino into a full length dive to his right. The ball fell inside of the box with Laker Kyle Gehnrich given a chance to tie but was stopped with a great save by Raffino. Raffino would end the game with 5 saves as the Lakers fell 1-0.
The Lakers are now 2-3 this season. Their next game will be when they host Fredonia September 17th at 1:00 as their SUNYAC opener.

Women’s Lacrosse Advances to SUNYAC Semifinals
OSWEGO, NY – The Lakers hosted Oneonta over the weekend for the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs. Oswego put the pedal to the metal and refused to look back, sending the Red Dragons back to Oneonta with a 13 goal loss. It was a record day on Lake Ontario, as the women broke the single season record for total wins in a season, which was set in 2016. Another record was tied in the game, with junior Isabella Lembo recording NINE total goals, which has stood since 2009. Here’s how it happened…
The Lakers jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter with the help of a hat trick by Lembo in the first. Also scoring for Oswego in the first was Julia Quirk and Shae McConnell, who scored twice in quarter one. The second quarter was a nightmare for the Red Dragons, as Oswego exploded for seven goals in the quarter, giving up just one goal to Oneonta. To make matters worse, the Lakers scored seven straight goals before the Red Dragons could find an answer on offense. Lembo came out swinging for the Lakers, scoring her fourth goal just 13 seconds into the quarter. McConnell extended the Lakers lead to five, giving her a first half hat trick. Sela Wiley got in on the action, scoring three straight goals for Oswego, giving her a hat trick as well. Lembo gave the Lakers a ten goal lead over Oneonta, but the Red Dragons cut it back to nine with a last minute goal to end the first half.
The second half was a little less rough for Oneonta, going goal for goal with the Lakers in the third quarter of play. Oswego netted four third quarter goals, with Lembo scoring twice, McConnell adding her fourth goal, and Noelle Smith scoring her first of the game. The Lakers would go into the final quarter of play with a 17-8 lead over Oneonta. However, Oswego would put the game away in the fourth, netting five more goals, holding Oneonta to just one. Quirk and Lembo each recorded back-to-back goals in the quarter to help seal the deal over the Red Dragons. Sadie Zemanick scored the final goal for the Lakers with just eight seconds remaining in the game.
Oswego defeated Oneonta by a score of 22-9, sending a statement to the rest of the teams still in play. The Lakers will now travel to Geneseo for a rematch with the Knights in the SUNYAC semifinals. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3rd at 7pm.
