OSWEGO, NY- Students marched across campus Thursday in peaceful protest of the Jacob Blake shooting.
The Rally was led by Brandon Gonzalez, who read off a list of demands for the Oswego administration. One of the demands includes banning the use of chokeholds by University Police.
Oswego Sophomore Jacques Allrichnaugaus II was among the peaceful protestors who shared his story.
“As a black American, I can say it’s hard to live in a white society,” said Allrichnaugaus II. “If you don’t know the struggle and don’t know somebody that went through the struggle, I urge you to learn about it. Learn about our history.”
This comes as national Black Live Matter protests have resumed in a response to the shooting, and just a day after athletes across the country boycotted games in solidarity of the national movement.

SUNY Oswego’s College Republicans Club uses beach ball to promote free speech

OSWEGO, NY – On Wednesday October 25th, the College Republicans Club at SUNY Oswego put up a 8-foot beach ball in front of Penfield Library to promote free speech. The beach ball was used as a medium to encourage students to write anything they wanted whether they were political views or their Instagrams.
President of the College Republicans Club Tyler Toomey said that using the beach ball as a medium for free speech is an event that is being held on other campuses along the east coast.
“It’s a pretty big event through some nonprofit organizations nationwide so we got in contact with them and they actually drove the ball from D.C down to us last night,” Toomey said.
Student Shelby Stewart took the opportunity to express her political views.
“I wrote that I support Trump…because a lot of people wrote a lot of liberal things and I feel like there’s not very many Republicans on campus,” Stewart said.
Stewart said she hopes that by having the beach ball present that it will inspire unity on campus.
“I think if anything it’s going to unite everybody because they see that the College Republicans aren’t just saying, ‘You can’t write anything on it if it’s not Republican’. So I think hopefully, it just going to unite campus and show that people can get along,” Stewart said.

Funnelle Hall has it’s largest Funnelle-o-ween Party so far
The annual Funnelle-O-Ween party took place last Tuesday night at Funnelle Hall.
According to the organization, this year they have had the highest attendance so far, with activities that ranged from a haunted house to raffles or face painting. “I like the haunted house and the food the best,” says student Mikayla McGarry.
“You know, I mean, it’s definitely interesting to see a lot of people will have like different costumes and you see people from… we have a lot people in this school from different countries and stuff so they’ll have a different variety of costumes as well, something you may not typically see,” Resident Advisor Seth Prevratil says.
“We’ve been doing this program for, I believe, it’s four years now here in Funnelle. It’s basically just an alternative for the residents to have something fun to do for Halloween. The residents really seem to enjoy it every year, so this year we decided to make it bigger and better. We added a haunted house, there’s new activities like pumpkin painting, a donut eating competition… As a person, having a diverse amount of people come to the program is really awesome, especially being here like I said for my third year just seeing all different people come together as a community and get involved and just not in Hart or at whatever building they live in, but coming to Funnelle from different parts of campus,” says Emily Vogt.
Students had a spook-tacular this year, so if you were not able to attend “boockle” up for next year.

Safe Trick-or-Treat

Halloween celebrations started early this past weekend on Sunday October, 30. SUNY Oswego held it’s annual Safe Trick-or-Treat day for Oswego families where children from the community dress up and have fun while being in a safe environment.
Vega, the junior senior honor and service society at SUNY Oswego organized this popular event. “Today the purpose is everyone whose coming needs to bring one food donation and then all of the food donations we get we will give them to the Oswego food bank,” said Vice President of Vega Ashley Cianciabella.
The event started at 11 p.m. and was filled with almost four hours of candy, smiles, and games. The Marano Campus Center had tons of games set up in the lower level by the food shops, while trick or treating activities were located in the east and central campus dorms.
This tradition is one of the many events that promotes safety and involvement for students and residents in the community. Vega president Jennifer Moss says that this year the program raised hundreds of food donations and that it was a success.
