PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s basketball team fell in their SUNYAC matchup against Plattsburgh State. The final score was 49-73 in favor of the Cardinals. Plattsburgh State was hot the whole game and proved to be too much to handle for the Lakers. At the half the Lakers were down by fourteen and despite an effort to bounce back, they could not find a rhythm to get the job done. The leading scorers for the women this game were senior Raiven Encarnacion with twelve points, and senior Danielle Caivana with eleven. Despite these two individual performances, Plattsburgh was able to hold the Lakers to 13.5% shooting on the night. The Lakers are now 3-9 on the season and 0-6 in the SUNYAC as they look to gain some momentum in their next matchup against Geneseo. Tip of is at 5:30 p.m. on January 19th on WTOP10!

New Paltz Overpowers Oswego in Field Hockey SUNYAC Opener.
OSWEGO, N.Y. — Despite a determined defensive effort and a standout performance from goalkeeper Sam Krautheim, Oswego State dropped its SUNYAC field hockey opener 3-0 to visiting SUNY New Paltz on Saturday at Laker Turf Stadium

Location: Laker Turf Stadium | Oswego, N.Y.The Lakers (2-7, 0-1 SUNYAC) faced early pressure, conceding goals to Rachel Tama and Ashley McGough in the first quarter. From there, Oswego’s defense settled in, shutting down 12 penalty corner chances across the second and third quarters. Krautheim anchored the backline with 20 saves, keeping the Hawks (5-4, 1-0) from extending their lead until the final period.
In the fourth, New Paltz capitalized on its 16th corner, with Maya O’Keefe finishing off an assist from Tama at 45:50. The Lakers’ lone offensive highlight came late, when Harlie Gilberti pushed a shot toward goal that was blocked.
Julia Alvey and the Oswego defense logged heavy minutes to disrupt New Paltz’s attack, but the Hawks outshot the Lakers 39-1 and held a 17-0 edge in corners. Attendance was listed at 125.
Oswego will look to rebound on Tuesday with a non-conference matchup at Keuka College, scheduled for 4 p.m.

Men’s basketball: SUNYAC preview
OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s basketball completed their season last weekend. One of the most dominant season’s in program history saw them lose only two games all season and only one in conference play. Their first loss came to Nazareth on November 23 and their second coming February 11 to New Paltz. Between the two losses, seventeen straight wins. They finished the season ranked seventeenth in the country, at their highest they were ranked fourteenth. They finished with a record of 23-2, 17-1 in conference play.
On Friday, they are set to play the New Paltz Hawks once more. The two teams play for the third time this season, and the for the second in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. The first time the two sides met was January 29 in Oswego, The Lakers came out victorious 82-53. Devin Green led the Lakers that day with thirteen points, including 4-7 from three. Kaleb Cook and Christian Simmons both contributed eleven. The second matchup was just two weeks ago, this time in New Paltz. In a game that most thought Oswego would walk away with just as they had almost every other game this season, New Paltz shocked Oswego and grabbed a one point victory. Jeremiah Sparks led all Lakers that night with fifteen points. With a rematch on the cards, and both teams looking to win the season series, the winner of the final matchup gets to move on to the SUNYAC Final, to play the winner of Brockport and Oneonta.
The Lakers were led this season by Sophomore guard Jeremiah Sparks and Junior guard Devin Green, both averaging 11.4 points per game. Julien Crittendon and Christian Simmons were the only other two Lakers to average over 10 points per game, 11.0 and 10.4 respectively. Devin Green was the fourth best three point shooter in the country this year, hitting threes at a 47.45% clip. Sparks and Green were also the teams rebounding leaders at 5.8 rebounds per game each, with Brendon Mulson right behind 5.7. What made Oswego stand out this year, was their team defense. Oswego allowed a measly 59.4 points against per game, the fourth best defense in the nation. They also held teams to a 37.2 field goal percentage, the fifth lowest in the nation.
The Lakers, led by head coach Jason Leone, are looking to win the tournament and get a bid to the NCAA tournament. The winner of Friday’s matchups will play in the SUNYAC championship game on Saturday. All games are being held at SUNY Oswego. Men’s Soccer defends Laker Stadium against Brockport
OSWEGO — This past Saturday, Men’s Soccer looked to continue their SUNYAC play against Brockport, a team receiving votes in the latest D3soccer.com national poll. The Lakers won off a Caleb Asamoah penalty kick during the second half to push the team past the Golden Eagles with a 1-0 finish. This victory allows Oswego to start conference play 2-0 for the first time in over a decade. The team looks to continue their strong play into next weekend, when the Lakers host SUNY Cortland on Saturday October 5th at 1 p.m.
