OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team kicked off the 2022 season on Saturday, falling to #7 ranked William Smith 11-3.

Oswego started their new campaign off quickly as Madison Davis found the back of the net for the first Lakers goal of the season, giving them a 1-0 advantage early in the first quarter. Just two minutes later, the Herons responded with a goal of their own and knotted the game up at one apiece. With 17 seconds left in the opening stanza, the Lakers scored on a 8-meter shot, but the goal was taken away by the officials after they deemed the pocket of the stick to be illegal. After some back-and-forth play, Oswego broke the tie at the 10:33 mark of the second period. Sophomore Julia Quirk got on the board with her first goal of the season, assisted by Logan Castiglione. Four minutes later, William Smith completely flipped the momentum. The Herons scored at the 6:13 mark and again at :23 to take a 3-2 lead into halftime. William Smith started to take control in the third quarter as they took a two-goal lead at 10:59. Although Oswego made some personnel adjustments, the Herons would not let up as they scored two more unanswered goals to bring the lead to 6-2 with 4:58 left in the frame. Needing a quick response, junior midfielder and 2021 All-SUNYAC member, Sela Wiley, ripped one over to Madison David who scored her second goal of the contest. Oswego attempted to claw their way back into the game, but the fourth quarter belonged to the Herons. William Smith scored five unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes and won the game 11-3.

Oswego wasn’t able to keep pace offensively as they lost in the shots-on-goal department 27-10. The Lakers also committed 23 turnovers, some of which directly contributing to Heron goals. Notably however, in her first game as a Laker, starting goalkeeper Sarah Kamide gathered in 16 saves and finished with a .593 save percentage. Although it wasn’t the outcome Oswego wanted, they have plenty of opportunities to rebound with the first being against Clarkson on Wednesday, March 2nd. Face-off is set for 4:00 p.m. in Potsdam.
