OSWEGO, N.Y. — Despite a great showing on Laker Turf Arena, the Lakers women’s lacrosse team couldn’t get the job done in their game against the Golden Flyers of Nazareth. The Golden Flyers were off to a wild star scoring the first three goals of the game. With three minutes left in the first, sophomore Julia Quirk and junior Sela Wiley both found success to narrow it down to a one goal deficit. The second quarter was back and forth action ultimately ending with the Golden Flyers taking a 6-5 lead at the half. It was a rough third quarter for the Lakers as the Golden Flyers scored six unanswered goals to bring the lead up to seven. The Lakers were not giving up just yet as they were able to score five more goals in a comeback attempt, ultimately losing by just four. The lead scorers for the Lakers were sophomore Julia Quirk with four goals and Junior Sela Wiley with three. The Lakers look to bounce back from this loss when they head to Lake Ontario Thursday to take on the Fredonia Blue Devils in a SUNYAC matchup. Game starts at 1:00!

Oswego State men’s hockey team splits 1-0-1 in weekend SUNYAC road trip
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego men’s hockey team withstood a two-game road trip this weekend, defeating SUNY Potsdam 2-1 on Friday while drawing with Plattsburgh State 2-2 on Saturday. Following these games, the Lakers are now 1-2-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in SUNYAC conference play.
Oswego was able to earn their first victory of the season in a hard fought battle against a familiar opponent in the Potsdam Bears. Potsdam started the game off hot, scoring the team’s first goal only 7:47 minutes into the first period. That would be the lone goal Potsdam would score in regulation as Oswego’s defense held strong throughout the final two periods. Sophomore forward Rocco Andreacchi got Oswego on the board with 11:10 left in the second period, scoring his first goal as a Laker. Quickly after, senior Ryan Bunka scored a goal of his own, bringing the score to 2-1. Throughout the rest of the game, both goalies played outstanding with neither letting up a goal. Steven Kozikoski finished the game with 30 saves while Connor Sleeth (2), Liam Haslam (1) and Ben Addison (1) all totaled assists.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, they didn’t experience the same success against Plattsburgh. Oswego went down early in the game as the Cardinals scored back-to-back goals to end the first period. Junior defenseman Tyler Antonucci brought the Lakers to within one following his powerplay goal in the second period. Not only did sophomore forward Alex DiCarlo assist on this play, but he also scored the game-tying goal 12:55 into the second period. Both teams had multiple opportunities to score throughout the rest of regulation but were unable to capitalize. Oswego outshout Plattsburgh 6-4 in overtime, but neither team was able to find the net and the game ended in a draw.
With this weekend’s results, Oswego now sits in second place in the SUNYAC standings, one spot behind SUNY Cortland who they’ll play on Nov. 12th. After a short weekend road trip, the Lakers will look to continue their momentum as they search for their first home victory in the newly named Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Puck drop vs. Cortland is set for 7:00 p.m. this Friday with Hockey Night in Oswego starting at 6:30 p.m. on WTOP 10.

Oswego State men’s hockey splits weekend in SUNYAC play
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team had another jam packed weekend with two conference games against Brockport and Geneseo. Heading into the games, Oswego was coming off a 2-1 win over the Cortland Red Dragons. The Lakers would extend their win streak Friday night on the road in Rochester at the Tuttle North Arena against the Golden Eagles. The Brockport team came into the contest with an overall record of 5-0 and receiving 24 votes in the USCHO Division III poll. Trent Grimshaw would strike first for the Lakers on the powerplay to give Oswego it’s first goal in the first period this season. The goal came 14:46 minutes into the period and was assisted by team points leader Connor Sleeth and defenseman Ben Addison. Oswego would add another power play goal in the second period off the stick of Rocco Andreacchi. The Lakers would complete the contest going 2/5 with the man advantage and Addison and Grimshaw would get credited with the assists on the goal. Brockport would answer during 4 on 4 hockey later in the period but would not be able to finish the comeback before the final buzzer sounded. Oswego netminder Steven Kozikoski would get the win in between the pipes and made 30 saves over the course of the contest.
The Lakers would head back to the Deborah F. Stanley Arena and set their sights on the number one ranked team in the nation, the Geneseo Ice Knights. These two teams faced off for the first time since the 2019-20 SUNYAC Championship game and Geneseo found themselves in a similar situation at the end of the contest. The Lakers would fall 6-1 to the Ice Knights, their fourth straight loss against the team. Geneseo would tally four goals in the first period, three of those against Kozikoski before the junior got pulled by head coach Ed Gosek. Eric Green would finish the contest for the Lakers. The junior goaltender also gave up three goals against making eight saves in between the pipes. The Lakers would win the shot battle 23 to 17 but would only be able to put one puck past Geneseo netminder Matt Petizian. Alex DiCarlo would ruin the shutout in the third period to find his third goal of the season.
After this weekend, Oswego remains towards the top of the SUNYAC conference with a record of 3-0-1-0-1 and 10 points. Geneseo remains at the top with 13 points and four wins and one tie. Plattsburgh State and Brockport along with Cortland all remain close behind the Lakers heading into Thanksgiving Break. Oswego will take this weekend off from conference play and head to Williamstown, Massachusetts to take on Williams College. Games are scheduled for Friday night and Saturday afternoon as the Lakers look to improve their overall record. Golden Eagles Hand Lakers First Loss of the Season
OSWEGO, NY- The Lakers played a tough-fought game against the Brockport Golden Eagles but unfortunately fell short 75-60. The first quarter was a defensive battle where the Lakers were able to force missed shots from the Golden Eagles. The Lakers also missed plenty of layups and shots during the first quarter as well. Karleigh Leo would lead the Lakers in points after one quarter with five points. The score was tied at 12 at the end of the first quarter.The Lakers finally were able to get into a rhythm in the second quarter. Karleigh Leo and Logan Castiglione both hit three-pointers to give the Lakers an 18-17 lead with almost halfway through the second quarter. The Lakers defense played stout in the second quarter as they forced the Golden Eagles to miss five consecutive three-point attempts in the quarter. Brockport was able to gain some momentum late in the quarter when they were able to hit a three-pointer and a couple of free-throws to give them a 32-27 lead over the Lakers at the half. Leo would lead the Lakers with eight points at the half followed by Shania Iglesias with seven.
Brockport would continue to put pressure on the Lakers in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles would go on a 12-point run before Oswego was able to cut the lead to four 43-39. The Golden Eagles would then go on a seven-point run to take a 50-39 lead with 2:08 remaining in the third. Oswego struggled from the field as they went 23.33% from the field but shot perfect from the free-throw line.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the Lakers trailed 50-43 but were unable to cut into the Golden Eagles lead. The Lakers would allow Stephanie Jean-Baptiste to hit three straight three-pointers to extend the Golden Eagles lead to 64-27 with 4:27. The Lakers managed to cut the Eagles lead to ten but gave up five points as they fell to the Golden Eagles 75-60. Karleigh Leo would lead the Lakers with 19 points on the night, hitting three three-pointers with Logan Castiglione scoring 17 points on the night.
The Lakers will travel to Buffalo State to take on the Bengals at 2 PM at The Sports Arena. Buffalo State is coming off a 61-46 loss to Geneseo where they currently sit a 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers haven’t won against Buffalo State since the 2019-20 season.
