Pride and Prejudice

Oswego, NY- The Oswego State theater department’s production of Jon Jory’s adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice, directed by theater professor Mya Brown, begins this weekend. Alexandra Matsu stars as Elizabeth Bennet, a woman looking to break away from the strict social norms she’s expected to follow in 19th century England. Matsu says the play’s message is about staying true to your feelings.
“Open your heart and to keep your heart open and don’t allow yourself to be affected by the noise of outside life,” she said.
Stage Director Emily Stott says giving the show a more modern feel makes it more powerful.
“To incorporate a contemporary heartbeat allows us to revitalize the show,” she said. “It provides a relatability to the audience, a modern feel.”
Also starring in the production is Cadi Hannold as Mrs. Bennet, Evan Debevec-McKenney as Mr. Bennet, Logan Colby-Rowe as Jane Bennet, Marisa Miner as Mary Bennet, Kayla Bonesera as Kitty Bennet, and Sean Ryan as Mr. Darcy.
Pride and Prejudice’s first preview performance will be on Apr. 20 at 7:30PM at the Waterman Theater in Tyler Hall, with opening night on Apr. 21. Performances will continue on Apr. 22 and 29 at 7:30PM and Apr. 30 at 2:30PM. Tickets are $15 to the general public and $7 for Oswego State students with ID.

Oswego Heroin Arrest
As Bridge Street Run 2015 comes into the horizon, Oswego County dealt with a heroin arrest on Thursday, February 26.
Investigators with the Oswego County Drug Task Force stopped 23-year-old Eugene J. Gibbs on St. Rt. 481 north of County Route 57 in the City of Oswego. The investigation resulted in a warrant being issued, and authorities recovered 8.2 grams of heroin.
Gibbs was arrested and charged with 3rd Degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with the intent to sell, and 4th Degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Gibbs is a resident of Utica, New York, but authorities believe he was attempting to sell the drugs in Oswego. The heroin had a street value of $5,500.
He is scheduled to to return to Oswego to Court on March 3, 2015.

New Art pieces in Oswego
OSWEGO, N.Y. -If you’ve walked through the quad lately, you’ve seen that Oswego has new sculptures on campus. The set of sculptures were a response to renovation work that was being done on Tyler Hall. The sculptures range from large red spikes representing connection or lack thereof with earth, to a sculpture that animals can live in blurring the lines between humans and nature.
The six pieces aren’t just local art, two of them hail from North Carolina and the other four from all across New York state. The Lifestyles Center will be co-hosting an event with the Student Art Exhibit Committee on October 19. #CelebrateSculpture will be held in the quad featuring the artists who built the sculptures, who will answer questions and talk about their experiences.
The large red piece is titled Prince, by Fredrick Douglas Schatz. This work is meant to be a self portrait. He said that it was a comment on the harmony and lack of harmony between each person and the earth that we inhabit.
