With the temperatures dropping and the levels of snow rising, battling the elements without a home to protect you is a nightmare to think about.
Sadly, this nightmare has become a harsh and cold reality for a man in Phoenix NY whose home was a flame on Monday evening.
The fire ensued in the 100 block of Huntley Road in the village of Phoenix, in Oswego County.
Volunteer firefighters from Phoenix, Baldwinsville, Caughdenoy, Cody, Liverpool, Moyers Corners and Volney responded to the call at 33 Elm Street and said the house was “fully involved,” in flames.
The Oswego County Cause and Origin Team also is at the scene.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

Women’s hockey goes 1-1 against Plattsburgh
The women’s hockey team suffered their first lost of the season against Plattsburgh on Saturday. The Lakers lost 7-1. The Cardinals almost had a shutout until Kendall Applebaum scored in the third period.
On Sunday though, the women would get their first win against Plattsburgh since the women’s hockey program got restarted in the 2006-2007 season. Plattsburgh got the first two goals on the board but then the Lakers took over. Jacquelin White got the scoring started for the Lakers in the second period. In the third, Eryn Stewart would get her first goal of the year to tie the game for the Lakers. Just 21 seconds later, Olivia Ellis would score what ended up being the game-winning goal. Mariah Madrigal stopped a career-high 48 shots.
With the win and loss, the Lakers move to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in conference. The women will travel to Massachusetts and take on Williams in non-conference action on Saturday and Sunday.

Mumps outbreak spreads at Syracuse University

SYRACUSE, N.Y.– Syracuse University reported that there are now 22 confirmed cases of mumps on the campus. According to the Onondaga County Health Department, another 19 probable cases were reported since the outbreak began in September.
The Centers for Disease Control states that symptoms of mumps include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite and swollen tender and salivary glands under the ears or along the jaws. It is contracted through saliva and respiratory sections and has been showing up across college campuses nationwide.
The University has quarantined students who have been diagnosed and who are suspected to have the disease. to attempt to contain the illness. Several of the students were put up in local hotels by the University. Many of the confirmed cases are coming from the Men’s Lacrosse, and Women’s Lacrosse teams. As a result both lacrosse teams have been shut down for the Fall semester.
According to the CDC, Mumps can be contracted even if patients were previously vaccinated. The University reported that a majority of the infected students had been vaccinated.
