OSWEGO — The Oswego State Women’s Tennis Team finishes the season with a victory over the Utica Pioneers by a score of (9-0). The Lakers finish the season with a (4-7) record. Bridget Bender, Samantha Spence, and Hoya Kobayashi all blanked their opponents in singles matches for the Lakers. Oswego will return in the spring for its non-traditional season.

Mens basketball brings win streak to 14 in dominant weekend
The Oswego state Lakers kept their hot streak of 14 straight going after two big home wins this weekend in the Max Ziel. The Lakers were met by Plattsburgh state on Friday night where the Cardinals were hoping for revenge from a previous 86-74 loss on December 11th. The Cardinals played tough n the first half and only trailed by two at 27-25 with 7:40 to go in the first half. But over the next five minutes the Lakers would go on a 19-6 run started from senior Devin Green and sophomore Joey Rowback. Oswego shot well from behind the arc in the first half with seven three-pointers from the Lakers as they took a 52-33 at the break.
The Lakers then exploded offensively at the start of the second half as Cartier Bowman started quick with 8 points in the first 5 minutes to bring the Oswego lead to 30. Oswego would then cruise from there and win with a 97-61 win. The Lakers shot 57% from the field in the second half and Jeremiah Sparks would stay hot with 27 points a game after going over the 1,000 point marker. Bowman, Green, Joey Rowback and Ahkee Anderson would also all score double digits in the contest.
Oswego would then move on to Suny Potsdam on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers and Bears started the game matching each others shots through the first seven minutes of play before the Lakers started to warm up and pull away. Joey Rowback would go on a absolute tear and hit four threes in a night where he ended with 15 points leading the Lakers to a 24 point lead at halftime. The Lakers shot a incredible 60.3% from the field in the first half of play and out rebounded the Bears by a 22-10 margin.
The Lakers would remain in control through the second half of play, refusing to let the Bears back into the game. Oswego would win their 14th straight and score over 100 points again with a 103-78 win over the Bears. Devin Green led the Lakers with 18 points on the evening, shooting 50% from the field Jamal Achille led the Lakers on the glass with eight rebounds and also pouring in 15 points.
Oswego now improves to 18-2,12-1 SUNYAC and will tip-off against New Paltz on Friday, February 3rd at home in the Max Ziel Gymnasium at 7:30pm.

Oswego Women’s Hockey splits in weekend homestand
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team split in back-to-back home games this weekend, falling to Plattsburgh State 5-2 on Friday before avenging their loss with a victory over SUNY Cortland 2-1 the following night.
It’s been an interesting start to the new year for the women’s hockey team. After their first two games of 2022 were cancelled, the Lakers dropped their first game of the year last week against Utica College. Looking to get one in the win column, the Lakers went into their game against Plattsburgh hungry for a victory. The Cardinal started the game off hot, scoring the first two goals of the contest opening period. Going into the second period, it took just 54 for sophomore forward Morgan Shines to get the Lakers on the board. Plattsburgh lead 2-1 heading into the third period. With 15:23 remaining in the game, Amanda Zenstein took a shot on net during a Lakers power play. Sophomore Kyleigh Grugin was able to rebound and snuck the puck into the goal, tying the game a 2 apiece. Though, following this momentum shift, Plattsburgh would go on to score three unanswered goals to end the period. This was the Lakers second loss to the #2 ranked Cardinal this season as they fell to them in a 5-0 contest on Nov. 13.
Heading into Saturday’s game versus SUNY Cortland, the Lakers were in need of a win to keep pace in the competitive NEWHL. Despite the first period be scoreless, the Lakers had a dominant 11-3 edge in shots-on-goal. Just 4:47 into the second period, Cortland stuck first with a goal, taking a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, the Lakers took advantage of a three-on-one fast break and scored off a Morgan Shines tip-in goal. Throughout the rest of the second period, the Lakers found themselves in penalty trouble. Twice they were two-women down, but were able to kill the penalty efficiently. The game remained knotted up until senior captain Philomena Teggart scored the go-ahead goal with 2:30 left on the clock. This was Teggart’s first goal of the season and she couldn’t have picked a more opportune time to score it. Joanna Hiebert finished the game with 19 saves while Kyleigh Grugin and Ariella Haas each totaled an assist.
The Oswego State women’s hockey team now sits at 7-4-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in NEWHL play. Following this win, the Lakers will look to carry their momentum into Tuesday’s contest against Morrisville State College. Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m. at Morrisville.

Oswego State men’s soccer team advances to SUNYAC tournament semi-finals
OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s soccer team (#6) defeated the Oneonta Red Dragons (#3) in a 2-1 shootout on Saturday, advancing to the SUNYAC semi-finals. This was the Lakers first win against Oneonta since 1965, ending a 56-year drought.
After falling to Oneonta on senior day just seven days prior, Oswego bounced back on an even bigger stage, earning the team’s first SUNYAC tournament win in Coach Dan Kane’s tenure there. It was a competitive bout from start to finish with Oneonta striking first in the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The score would remain the same until the 64th minute after freshman midfielder Hajoon Lee scored off a pass from Kieran Gilroy. However, that would be the final goal of the game as neither team could find the back of the net throughout the rest of regulation and both overtime periods, forcing a shootout.
Through the first four rounds of the shootout, each player on both teams scored on their attempt. Though in the final round, Oneonta’s Malcom Swett hit the crossbar while sophomore defenseman Brendan Murphy made his attempt. In a match that took more than 110 minutes to declare a winner, the Lakers were able to edge the Red Dragons in a shootout, 5-4.
With their first-round victory, Oswego State will now travel to New Paltz to take on the Hawks in the SUNYAC semi-finals on Wednesday, Nov. 3rd. This will be the second time these two teams have met this season with the first game resulting in a 2-1 New Paltz victory on Oct. 22nd. Oswego will look to bounce back in the same way they did against Oneonta in hopes of advancing to the SUNYAC Championship final. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
