OSWEGO, N.Y. – A fight across the street from the Shineman Center early Sunday morning resulted in a man being sent to Upstate Medical University Hospital. When University Police arrived at the scene they found an 18-year-old man had been assaulted and stabbed four times in the shoulder.

     Witnesses say that four males in dark clothing with hoodies pulled over their heads, came out of a dark colored 4-door Honda before attacking the freshman. A female was driving the car, and it was last seen heading east on Washington Boulevard.

     The argument is believed to have begun earlier in the night in front of the American Legion on Bridge Street.  The victim’s injuries are not life threatening and he is in stable condition.

     The incident is currently under investigation by State University Police and is asking anyone with information to contact them at 315-312-5555.

Three people were charged following the discovery of a meth lab on the city’s east side Wednesday morning. Oswego Police responded to 196 Syracuse Ave. following information that there was a meth lab operating inside. Upon arriving at the house, police found evidence that a laboratory was located in the front apartment.

The Oswego Fire Department was called in to decontaminate the two men believed to be operating the lab, as well as a third female resident. The fire department stayed on scene throughout the day in case of an explosion or fire.

Syracuse Ave. was closed to traffic between South Division St. and Lawrence St. and the New York State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team was called in to continue the investigation alongside the OPD.

Oswego Police said that a search warrant was obtained through the Oswego City Court. The search turned up several one pot methamphetamine labs, also known as “shake-and-bake” labs. In addition, 10 ounces of methamphetamine oil were found.

Syracuse Ave. was reopened around 4:30 in the afternoon, more than seven hours after police initially responded.

Arrested in the investigation were Frederick Carvey III, 37 and Zechariah Morrison, 32. Both were charged with 2nd degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and 3rd degree Unlawful Manufacture of Methamphetamine. They are being held until their arraignment.

Also charged was Brittaney Perkins, 23, for Endangering the Welfare of a Child. She was released on an appearance ticket

Oswego, NY- Tapestries, curtains, and flags are just a few of the items prohibited from the residence halls in Oswego State. The items are promptly confiscated if they are discovered in any of the dorms. Onondaga Assistant Hall Director Chris Lewand says wall decorations are a risk to fire safety.

“Tapestries, curtains, and flags lead to more fire hazards than your typical poster would,” he said. “However we do have restrictions on posters, they’re only allowed to be on 10 percent of the wall they’re not allowed to be within two feet of the ceilings. So there are restrictions in place, but overall it comes down to what the fire marshall has deemed to be more flammable.”

While posters are considered to be safe for students to have in their possession, some disagree with the claim that one is more hazardous than the other.

“I feel like they take up about the same amount of space on the wall and they’re made of similar flammable materials,” student Cooper Lee said. “I just don’t see how one person can specifically say how a poster is that much more safe than a tapestry,”

Other students are accepting of the rule, but also think a change in policy may lead to a better solution, feeling there needs to be more trust in the on-campus residents.

“I understand why tapestries would be not allowed in rooms,” student Julia Gaudio said. “However I think that there are many flammable things that people don’t focus on and most kids have tapestries anyway,”

“I think there’s a lot of tapestries that are hung up and there hasn’t been a fire started yet,” student Lilia Grucza said. “I feel like they just need to give us a little more credit for knowing to be safe with fire safety instead of just banning anything that could potentially start a fire.”
