The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team opened its season with a 13-8 win over Hartwick College on Saturday. Oswego is now 1-0 overall while Hartwick drops to 0-1.
Both teams seemed evenly matched throughout the contest as the Lakers went into the final quarter with a 7-5 lead. Oswego, led by freshman Robbie Connors, scored six goals in the fourth to secure the win. He finished with five points in his Laker debut while also winning 16 of 25 face-offs. Oswego had plenty of scorers as a total of seven Lakers scored at least two points apiece.
Goalie Kevin O’Donnell stopped 11 saves for Oswego to earn the win.
The Lakers will return to action on Wednesday as they open their road trip against Ithaca at 4 pm.

SUNY Oswego and CITI

High school students in Oswego County and SUNY Oswego have been teaming up to help young adults with special needs develop work skills. Thirty students are enrolled into the Center for Instruction, Technology, and Innovation (CITI) program. The CITI program has been a part of SUNY Oswego for the past twenty-five years, and is currently located in the basement of Hewitt.
Students in the program learn basic work skills through making ceramic products. Each student is responsible for a different job including, pouring clay into the molds, smoothing the clay product before going into the kiln, and painting the pottery when finished. Once the ceramic items are complete, they are then sold within the community. All profits are funneled back into the program to buy more supplies and materials.
“Students are all striving to get some kind of skills that they can use in the workforce,” said Vocational teacher, Lisa Carney
CITI has three half day classes that run Monday through Friday every week for two hours. Students can qualify for the state aided program until they are twenty-one years old.

Oswego Heroin Arrest
As Bridge Street Run 2015 comes into the horizon, Oswego County dealt with a heroin arrest on Thursday, February 26.
Investigators with the Oswego County Drug Task Force stopped 23-year-old Eugene J. Gibbs on St. Rt. 481 north of County Route 57 in the City of Oswego. The investigation resulted in a warrant being issued, and authorities recovered 8.2 grams of heroin.
Gibbs was arrested and charged with 3rd Degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with the intent to sell, and 4th Degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Gibbs is a resident of Utica, New York, but authorities believe he was attempting to sell the drugs in Oswego. The heroin had a street value of $5,500.
He is scheduled to to return to Oswego to Court on March 3, 2015.

The Zika Virus

For the past few months the concern over the Zika virus has been steadily growing. The Zika virus as of now is found mostly south of the United States in Central America and the northern part of South America, but is expected to spread northward as it gets warmer and warmer headed into summer. The full capacity of the disease is unknown, each week new symptoms and ways of transmission are talked about.
What we know is that the symptoms are relatively mild for adults but for pregnant women who catch the disease the fetus is susceptible to numerous brain complications upon birth.
The disease is spread mostly by mosquito but sexual transmission has also been know to happen for those carrying the disease. And there is currently no vaccine or cure for the virus.
As for the Oswego area the mosquitos that carry Zika are not expected to travel this far north this summer however for students living in Long Island, New York City, and southward be careful because it will be warm enough for mosquitos to travel up to those areas. A lot of bug spray, long pants, and long sleeve shirts this summer may be a good idea to decrease your chances of catching the virus.
