BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers traveled west on the thruway to take on the Buffalo State Bengals Wednesday afternoon. The action started early in this matchup as the Lakers scored twice before the second minute of the game. The first goal came off the foot of Kieran Gilroy a minute and twenty-two seconds into the game. Just thirteen seconds later Liam Rothar would score giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Chris Smith. The action didn’t stop there. Ten minutes later Buffalo State cut the Lakers lead in half. No other goals in the first half. Oswego goalie Matt D’Arpino made two saves in the first.
The second half didn’t have any goals, but did see plenty of action. The 66th minute saw competing red cards. Oswego’s Matthew Sprague and Buffalo State’s Ayden Cristales each received red cards causing both teams to go down ten men. Oswego would receive two more yellows in the game, with the Bengals receiving one. The game ended 2-1. Despite the win, the Lakers ended up being out shot 16-8, and outshot in shots-on-goal 5-3. Matt D’Arpino ended the game with a total of four saves.
The Lakers are now 5-6-2 (2-3-2 SUNYAC) and have 8 points. They are sitting sixth in the SUNYAC, the final playoff spot.

Men’s basketball falls short, takes first loss of year
OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s basketball team took on Nazareth at home Tuesday night. Playing in their final game before opening SUNYAC play, the team couldn’t complete the comeback, losing 67-65. The game started with Nazareth taking a 10-4 lead early on, but the Lakers would tie it up at ten soon after. The Golden Flyers then went on another scoring run, over the next seven minutes they jumped the score to 23-13. The teams would go back and forth the rest of the half, with the score being 41-33 at the break. Nazareth was very efficient from beyond the arc in the half shooting 8-14. Oswego was also very accurate, shooting 5-8 from three point land.
The game was back and forth for most of the second half, but the Golden Flyers grew the lead to thirteen just with just under six minutes to play. The Lakers started their comeback with a pair of jumpers and a three from freshman guard Julien Crittendon. Oswego then cut the lead to four with just under two to play, and a block from Brendon Mulson would lead to a three for junior guard Devin Green to make the score 66-65 with a minute and half to go. The Lakers couldn’t capitalize on the momentum though, missing two layups and a corner three for the win. The Lakers played tough basketball all game. The second half the defense stepping up, holding Nazareth to 1-5 from deep, and 27% from the field. Jeremiah Sparks led the team in scoring with seventeen points, with Julien Crittendon and Kaleb Cook having thirteen and ten respectively. Mulson cleaned the boards, leading the whole contest with twelve rebounds while also being a point shy a double-double with nine points.
Oswego’s next game is on Tuesday, November 30th vs the Cortland Red Dragons in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Tip off is set for 7:30 PM.

Men’s soccer falls to Cortland in SUNYAC championship

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego men’s soccer team travelled to Cortland Saturday afternoon to take on the Red Dragons in the SUNYAC tournament championship game. The Lakers had fought hard to make it to the tournament and then make it all the way to the championship game, but their exciting run came to an end as they would fall 6-0. Cortland got themselves on the scoreboard early when they would get to a loose ball in the box and score. The Red Dragon’s would net another before the half to make it 2-0. Cortland kept their momentum going in the second half, getting their third goal seven minutes in, and their fourth seven minutes later. They converted two more times before the end of the game, making it 6-0. Cortland dominated the second half of the game, getting fourteen shots to Oswego’s three. Oswego had a total of six shots in the game, two each from Ryan Young and Kyle Gehnrich. Oswego’s Caleb Munski, Kieran Gilroy, and Hajoon Lee all earned All-Tournament honors.

Men’s basketball dominates Red Dragons on senior day
OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Lakers men’s basketball team looked to continue their win streak to 17 this past weekend when they hosted the Cortland Red Dragons for senior night on Saturday evening. The first half ended up being controlled by the Lakers but Cortland held Oswego tough in the first half. After the first ten minutes the score was 13-10 Lakers until Jamal Achille became the offensive spark for Oswego and started a Laker 6-0 where lone senior Devin Green chipped in and added four points over that same stretch. After that run the Lakers exploded on offense going on a 41-18 run the last 10 minutes of the first half shooting similarly from the field and from three-point range (58.06% FG%, 58.33% 3PT%). Oswego got out ahead and had a 54-28 at the half.Cortland tried to start off the half stronger as reigning SUNY-AC player of the year Austin Grunder made a couple big shots to start for the red dragons. But it wouldn’t last long as Kaleb Cook took over during a four-minute stretch during the second half, scoring ten points, while Cortland could only get 4. By that point Cortland couldn’t get anything to go and Oswego would cruise to a 102-62 for their 7th game over 100 points in this season. The Lakers also keep their 17 game streak alive, not losing since the loss to Brockport at home in December. Jeremiah Sparks and Devin Green both had 14 points for the game in a great shooting game for Oswego, but the game was led on Oswego’s side by Kaleb Cook, whose ten point outburst in the second half helped him score 16 for the game. Cortland’s Austin Grunder ended up with another double double in this game and was the only Cortland player that was a positive in this game leading all scorers with 24. Oswego’s bench outscored the Red Dragons 47-18. and the Lakers dominated in the paint beating Cortland 48-10.
Coach Leone gets his 300th career win as a coach and the Lakers move to 21-2,(15-1 SUNYAC). The men’s team will travel to Brockport, NY to face Brockport on Friday, February 17 in a revenge game as Brockport was Oswego’s only previous SUNYAC loss.
