Lakers Look to End Losing Streak

The Oswego women’s softball team will be hosting the Geneseo Knights this Saturday in a doubleheader. The Lakers enter the game on a two game losing streak but look to bounce back and get over the .500 mark in conference play. Geneseo is heading into this matchup with a 7 game win streak on the line including 3 shutouts during that stretch. The Lakers have not struggled putting runs on the board. In their last contest against Oneonta, they lost with 9 runners crossing the plate. Sophomore outfielder Rebecca Vilchez had two hits, two RBIs and one run scored in that game so she will be a big factor in the Lakers success. First pitch is set for 12 pm with the second game following immediately after.

SUNY Oswego’s new Vegan Club
by Julia Tilley
Oswego, NY– Oswego State student Genevieve Clifford recently created a Vegan Club for the campus community. Campus Dietitian Sarah Formoza assisted with the creation of the club.
“I would love [for us] vegans and vegetarians and people who just follow those lifestyles to have more of a support, because sometimes I do feel like we are lost in the midst of things,” Clifford said.
Clifford plans for the club to be a place where students who are vegan, vegetarian, or just want to learn about veganism, can help each other and ultimately change campus to be more vegan-friendly.
“Being here at Oswego, I am so grateful for those [vegan] options, but there’s so much more we can always do,” she said.
Clifford explains that even though she could just discuss the menu with the managers at the dining halls, it’s about the bigger picture and helping to improve campus for all current and future vegans.
“If we have a club, if we have a community backing each other up and supporting each other, change can happen,” she said.
Sarah Formoza, who creates Oswego State’s menus, hopes the club can provide her with feedback and possibly serve as a test-group for future vegan menu items.
“I think it’s a great outlet for the students to connect with each other that have similar interests and similar dietary lifestyles, and they can provide support for each other; particularly maybe someone that’s new, maybe just wanting to try a vegan or vegetarian diet, they can learn from those that have been on it,” Formoza said.
The club is open to anyone interested. Meetings are held every Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the Marano Campus Center room 226.Post Views: 180 -
Oswego Movie Theatre 75 year Anniversary
Reported by: Abigail Buttacavoli, WTOP-10 TV
What’s better than the aroma of freshly popped popcorn and the boom of a new blockbuster film? To the people of Oswego, one little movie theater has been a family favorite for almost a century.
This year Oswego Cinema is celebrating 75 years in business since its grand opening on January 22, 1941. Originally located on the corner of Bridge Street and Second Street where the current theater stands was the Hippodrome Theater which opened its doors around 1910.
The Oswego Cinema, referred to as the Oswego 7 Cinemas for its seven screen rooms, was built in 1940 for M. Shapiro and Sons and designed in the art deco style by noted architect of his time John Ebberson. The old time charm and the movement of the lights give an appearance of going back in time and that attracts Oswego moviegoers.
Vinny Ruggio, a lifelong Oswego resident, brought his grandchildren to the movies and explained his memories and his love of the theater. “It’s the best gig in town, even now for me,” he said, “and I want my grandchildren to enjoy the same experience and I hope this place always stays open.”
“I like the art deco atmosphere of the place, it just has a lot of history, being almost 75 years old,” said Cole Smith, the general manager. He believes the theater is a great part of the town.
Each and every person who comes through the doors of the cinema is witnessing a unique piece of history. Here’s to 75 more years!
