OSWEGO — The Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse team finished their fall season with two scrimmages against Cazenovia College and SUNY Polytechnic institute. It was the final test for them for the Fall before they transition to the spring season. The scrimmage also served as a fundraiser for the Wilmot Cancer Institute as admissions to the scrimmage were free and went towards Wilmot.

Women’s basketball loses tough SUNYAC matchup
OSWEGO N.Y. — The women’s basketball team took their fourth straight loss Saturday afternoon. The Lakers kept it close but ultimately lost 55-49 to the Cortland Red Dragons. The Lakers Danielle Caivana opened the scoring in the game with a three. Cortland wouldn’t let the Lakers capitalize on potential early momentum and went on a 17-2 scoring run. Shania Iglesias hit a buzzer beating three at the end of the first quarter to make the score 17-8. The teams traded baskets to start the second quarter. The Red Dragons extended the lead to 34-18 before the Lakers would go on an 8-0 run and close the gap to end the half. The Lakers shot 10-31 (32%) from the field in the first half, and 6-17 (35%) from deep. Cortland shot 14-38 (37%) from the field, and 2-10 from three.
The third quarter started strong for the Lakers, a small 5-0 run in the first two minutes saw them close the gap to 31-34, before Cortland would score their first basket. A two and a half minute scoreless run to the six minute mark was followed by a 9-2 Cortland run to extend their lead back to twelve, and end the frame. Oswego started the fourth like they started the third, this time four quick points out the gate to cut the Cortland lead to six. Cortland would answer with a three and get the lead back to 48-39. The teams would go back and forth for the remainder of the game and get to the final score of 55-49. Shania Iglesias had a team high fourteen points. Danielle Caivana was the only other on the team over double digits with twelve. Diamond Pickett had ten rebounds to go with six points. The team finished the game 19-66 (29%) shooting, and 8-31 (26%) from three.
The women’s basketball team currently sit at 3-11 (0-8 SUNYAC). Their next game is in Geneseo against the Knights as the look for their first in conference win. Tip off is set for 5:30 on p.m. Tuesday, January 25. WTOP 10 will continue to provide coverage of the Oswego State women’s basketball team as the group continues their 2021-22 season.

Oneonta Blanks Oswego 3-0 in SUNYAC Opener
OSWEGO, N.Y. — Joe Holder scored in the third minute and Milton Mancias Magana added two goals as SUNY Oneonta defeated Oswego State 3-0 on Saturday in the SUNYAC men’s soccer opener at Laker Turf Stadium

Holder put the Red Dragons (6-2-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) on the board just 3:23 into the match off an assist from Nico Loaiza. Despite eight first-half saves from Oswego goalkeeper Kyle Rose, Oneonta controlled play and doubled its lead in the 43rd minute when Mancias Magana broke through for his first tally.
The Lakers (1-4-3, 0-1) managed only three shots in the contest and struggled to break down a disciplined Oneonta defense. Rose finished with eight saves, keeping Oswego within striking distance until Mancias Magana struck again in the 86th minute off a pass from Zach Tanner to seal the result.
The match featured physical play throughout, with 19 combined fouls and a yellow card issued to Oneonta’s Erik Popp late in the first half. Oneonta outshot Oswego 27-3 and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Lakers will look to rebound Wednesday when they travel to SUNY Canton for another nonconference matchup.

Game Recap: Oswego Hockey falls to Baldwinsville
OSWEGO, NY — Monday evening, the Oswego Boys Buccaneers Hockey team welcomed the Baldwinsville Bees into the Crisafulli Ice Rink for a Section III Hockey matchup. The Bees were on a mission to snap a two-game losing streak while Oswego looked to start a four-game series off on a high note. Senior goaltender Brayden Demling would once again start in net for Oswego but would not last that long as freshman forward Sam Ciappa would net his first goal of the game. The Bee would later tally two more for a hat trick in his first season with the team. But, that would come after Demling was replaced by backup netminder Mason Kurilovitch. This would be the first time the goaltender has seen action in the first period, and would later give up three goals during his time in between the posts. Marcus Baker would score the first Buccaneer goal before the end of the first stanza to make it a 3-1 hockey game.
Lukas Cady was able to tally his third goal of the season on the powerplay in the first part of the second period. However, Baldwinsville would not look back. The Bees would add two more in the period and cap off the game with an additional tally in the third period. Sophomore netminder Jon Schirmer would allow two goals in the contest and get his second win of the season in net for the Bees.
Oswego now sets sail for the Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse as the two teams face off for the second time in four days. The familiar foes will drop the puck at 8:30 p.m. at the Coliseum located at the New York State Fairgrounds. On Saturday, the Brothers defeated the Bucs 6-2 at the Fort Ontario.
