The Oswego State field hockey team’s four game winning streak came to an end after a 5-1 loss to William Smith.
The Herons opened the scoring with two goals early in the first half to give themselves a 2-0 lead going into halftime. In the 40th minute, the Lakers were able to get on the board thanks to Katie Reynolds’ team leading seventh goal of the season. That would be all for Oswego though as William Smith responded with three more scores.
Lakers goalkeeper Sarita Charap made 11 stops after playing the entire game with her teammate, Brianna Ciganek also contributing two defensive saves. Emily King played a majority of the game at the goalkeeping position for the Herons, notching three saves.
Oswego, now 4-3, will go on the road to face conference foe, Brockport, on Saturday.

Route 104 construction in Oswego continues

OSWEGO, NY – The construction along route 104 that has been going on since July of 2016 has become an unwelcome visitor to local home owner Frank Palmer.
The traffic congestion along with the loud noises and dust from construction Palmer said has brought him other residents problems for the last two years.
The 4 mile strip of the state road stretching from the SUNY Oswego campus entrance, west, the route 104A intersection in southwest Oswego is getting widened 2 feet on either side. New drainage gutters and culverts are also being built along with the road getting repaved.
Project engineer for the state department of transportation Frank Brosch oversees the project. Brosch says the improvements being made to the road will make it safer as there has been problems with this in the past. One of the main reasons Brosch said for widening the road was because many tractor trailers were going off the road into ditches in that area. Widening the shoulder of the road will create a safer environment for traffic and tractor trailers; despite this Frank Palmer said he is still skeptical about how much safer it will actually be because of the faster speeds the trucks will be more inclined to go.
After more than a year the majority of the work on the $14 million dollar project is done. Despite some weather delays this past spring the better weather now means the roadwork should be done by the end of December.

Men’s Soccer Falls to Rival Plattsburgh
The Oswego State men’s soccer team lost a close match to rival Plattsburgh by a final score of 4-3 on Friday. After the loss, the Lakers record is now 6-3-1 while the Cardinals move to 8-2-0 this season.
Early into the game senior midfielder Connor Lunduski gave the Lakers an early lead on the road. Later in the match, with the Cardinals up 2-1, Jason Siracuse was able to tie the game with his fourth goal of the season. Plattsburgh would answer back with two more goals and with Caleb Asamoah’s seventh of the year at the end of the match, the final score would read 4-3 in favor of the Cardinals.
The Lakers are back in action on Saturday in Potsdam at 1 p.m.

Halloween Activities in Oswego

For college students who do not drink, finding a fun way to spend Halloween can be a bit of a challenge. But SUNY Oswego junior Ray Ossino says there’s plenty of options for sober scholars.
“I like to celebrate Halloween by going with a few of my friends to Lake Effect Cafe,” said Ossino. “They have a costume contest every Halloween, and then they have Halloween trivia.” She says campus events like this can be a great way to branch out.
“You get to meet new people, and through the people that I met there I found out that at the ice rink, they have open skate for Halloween too, and the also have a halloween costume contest there too.”
For students who want their Halloween weekend to be a bit scarier, Campus Recreation administrative assistant Jaydee Maldonado has a solution. She’s organized an upgrade for one of the campus’s most popular halloween events: the Scalesbury haunted house. Along with campus recreation, Maldonado has extended the haunted house to Lee Hall.
“This haunted house is actually going to be not only a haunted house,” said Maldonado. “It’s going to be a movie session at Scales Hall and then there is food, drinks and activities of all sorts relating to Halloween in Waterbury, and then Lee hall has the main event.” She says the addition of Lee Hall will elevate the haunted house from a quick event into all-night entertainment.
“I want us to continue to create events where students don’t always feel like they need to go out on weekends and do things off campus”, said Maldonado. She hopes the that these halloween events will inspire similar events in the college’s future.
