Crossfit
By Stefanie Sciolaro
Baldwinsville, NY- – Since its founding in 2000, Crossfit has begun to grow in popularity. The sport combines high intensity with low durations. The workouts incorporate endurance, strength, and flexibility in order to exert the most out of participants in a shorter period of time.
Crossfit has grown to over two billion members and 10,000 gyms all around the world. This worldwide epidemic prides itself on the importance of a healthy community atmosphere. However, many individuals feel Crossfit is meant for only those of a specific age and body build.
“The uniqueness of Crossfit lies in how universal it is when it comes to who can do it. I have athletes ranging in ages from 14 to 64 with all different skill levels” Smokey Hollow Crossfit co-owner Tim MacConehey said.
Members of the Crossfit community have the opportunity to compete year round in a series of competitions, in both team and individual divisions. Every year these competitions stand as the main qualifiers for the Crossfit Games. The Crossfit Games, is this sports equivalent to the Olympics. The best athletes in the world come together to compete for who will be crowned fittest woman and man on earth.
In the past, the Crossfit Games have been held in Carson, California. However, the venue has been moved to Madison, Wisconson. The Games will begin this August.

Florida Governor declares state of emergency before white supremacist speech
By Stefanie Sciolaro
GAINESVILLE, F.L.– Richard Spencer, a white supremacist and President of the National Policy Institute, spoke at University of Florida in Gainesville today. He began his speech by declaring that all individuals have the right to free speech regardless of the ideology of it. As Spencer continued it was clear the audience was more against than for his words.
Audience members began to drown out Spencer’s words with chants such as “go home” and “Nazi’s are not welcome here”. Participants in the crowd held fists and middle fingers in the air.
“I’m not going home, I will stand here all day if I have to,” Spencer said.
The university and law enforcement were prepared for the worst before the event began. They had barricades and roadblocks set up prior around the area that the event had taken place. Police began to suit up in riot gear as tensions grew both in and outside of where the event was being held.
According to NPR, Florida’s Governor Rick Scott previously denied an earlier request by Spencer to give a speech at UF because of the events that occurred in Charlottesville, North Carolina.

Student Association Cuts Vocal Effect Budget In Half

Since the beginning of the semester, multiple clubs have had trouble with funding as they were not budgeted capital to support themselves. Vocal Effect, a show choir on campus, is one of those clubs.
“Vocal Effect is a SUNY Oswego’s one and only show choir. We do performances all over campus and in the town of Oswego. We meet every couple of days and just have fun, sing, and dance. It’s a lot of fun,” said President, Thomas Waizenegger.
Vocal Effect meets weekly and are about 30 members strong. This year Vocal Effect has had their funding cut right in half dropping from a $3,000 budget to a $1,500 budget.
“At the start of the year we started with about $1,500, we had about $3,000last year, and now our budget and now our budget was slashed in half over the course of a year,” said Waizenegger.
This is problematic for the club. Much of their funding is used for acquiring new material to perform and the rights to do so, as well as costuming and transportation to the multiple venues that the group performs at.
“It’s not fun, having your funding cut in half in less than a year. I understand that the Student Association had to make these cuts in order to start getting themselves out of the red, but for smaller clubs like Vocal Effect, it’s not fun and it’s not sustainable for us,” said Waizenegger.
As for the group currently, you can catch them on October 26th at 3 PM in The Space, Marano Campus Center free admission for all.
