This past week, Lakers defender Kate Randazzo earned herself the NEWHL player of the week. Randazzo tallied four assists in Friday’s 5-0 rout of New England College. On Saturday, Randazzo netted the overtime game winner against Castleton with 39 seconds left in the overtime period. Randazzo and the Lady Lakers return to the ice this Saturday to take on Elmira College.

SUNY Oswego hosts Mardi Gras event

OSWEGO, NY: KAITLYN: MARDI GRAS, A CULTURAL CELEBRATION HAS A DEEPER MEANING THAN MOST ARE LEAD TO BELIEVE.

KAITLYN: THE CELEBRATION ESTABLISHED IN 1718 IN NEW ORLEANS BECAME A YEARLY RITUAL WHERE A;; GATHERED TO CELEBRATE WITH RICH FOOD, COLORFUL COSTUMES AND MUSIC BEFORE THE SEASON OF LENT BEGAN.
KIMBERLY SMITH/STUDENT EVENT COORDINATOR: “The purpose of the vent was to incorporate different cultures such as the Canadian Culture, the Hatian Culture, the Americanized New Orleans Culture and the Italian Culture. And it’s important to bring people together to see how others celebrate a very well known tradition such as Mardi Gras.”
KAITLYN: SUNY OSWEGO BOUGH THE CULTURE OF NEW ORLEANS TO THE MARANO CAMPUS CENTER WITH MORE THAN 100 STUDENTS IN ATTENDANCE. STUDENTS WERE GIVEN THE CHNACE TO LEARN ABOUT AND EXPERIENCE THE CULTURE RELATED TO THE CELEBRATION OF MARDI GRAS.

Madrigal Earns Shutout Against Buffalo State
In their first ever game as a member of the NEWHL, the Oswego State women’s ice hockey team defeated Buffalo State 3-0 on Saturday. With the victory, the Lakers move to 2-1 overall with a 1-0 conference record while the Bengals drop to 1-4 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
Although Oswego State was outshot in the contest, the Lakers remained in control mainly because of the amount of faceoffs won and their timely goals. In the first period, Oswego State’s Eryn Stewart opened the scoring with her second goal of the season on an assist from senior Olivia Ellis. After a Victoria Rankin goal in the second and an injury to Buffalo State’s starting goalie Justine Silva, Ellis capped off the Lakers’ scoring to seal the game.
Before exiting the game, Justine Silva made 20 saves for the Bengals while also allowing two goals. Mariah Madrigal played all 60 minutes of the game in goal for the Lakers and tied her season-high with 33 saves. The shutout marks her second clean sheet of the season.
Oswego will look to sweep the weekend series against Buffalo State at home on Sunday at 3:00 pm.

Hewitt Hall Set to Become New Communications Building
This spring, Hewitt Hall is expected to shut down in preparation for its renovation to become the new communications department building. This new space is set to give students more access to the tools they need.
The Chair of the Department of Communication Studies, Jessica Reeher, explains what is planned to be included in this new space. “The new building is going to house all of communications studies as a department, and as well as the Dean’s office for SCMA and the graphic design faculty component of the art department.”
The Hewitt building is home to many of SUNY Oswego’s departments, including the Department of Sustainability and the Department of Auxiliary Services. It also currently includes many counseling services, and the health center.
The renovated Hewitt building is expected to be a space for students to utilize 24 hours a day. Once the renovations are finished, this new space is set to include open areas for students to relax and eat.
There are also plans for team rooms where small groups can get together to work on projects or scripts. There will also be more studio spaces, more computer labs, and more opportunities for students to get ahold of the technology they need.
Reeher stated, “We envision this as a 24-hour building. So students can access if you need to get into the editing suite, if you need to get into a studio, you can get access to many of the facilities 24 hours.”
According to Reeher, once the space in Hewitt is up and running for the students, Lanigan hall will then move into a phase of renovation. All of the renovations happening are being done with the students in mind, so they are able to make the most of their time here at Oswego.
The renovation plans were made pre-COVID so the dates for opening the new building are subject to change. But, Reeher seems to have high hopes that the project will be completed and that the building will be open for students by spring 2024.
