This past week, Lakers defender Kate Randazzo earned herself the NEWHL player of the week. Randazzo tallied four assists in Friday’s 5-0 rout of New England College. On Saturday, Randazzo netted the overtime game winner against Castleton with 39 seconds left in the overtime period. Randazzo and the Lady Lakers return to the ice this Saturday to take on Elmira College.

Local Business Lookout: River’s End Bookstore
Oswego, N.Y. – Local hotspot, River’s End bookstore, is located in downtown Oswego at 19 West Bridge Street. Housing a collection of approximately 12,000 books, the store has a variety of genres and can special order books for customers, or offer online purchasing options.
All of this is an effort to provide stellar service and “to make a life time customer” according to owner Bill Reilly.
River’s End Bookstore holds Story Time on Tuesdays, collaborations with other local businesses and the campus, and book release parties. They also sell large quantity books to places like the hospital, as well as carry items like apparel, colored pencils, and greeting cards.

SUNY Chancellor confident in Oswego’s testing strategies despite a rise in COVID-19 cases
OSWEGO, NY- After SUNY Oswego’s spike in COVID-19 cases sparked uncertainty, SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras says he is confident in SUNY Oswego’s testing and mitigation strategies.
“It’s under control here,” says Malatras. “[Oswego] has the testing and isolation in place. If it does get to the point where they have to use more mitigation efforts, they stand ready to do that.”
SUNY Oswego saw it’s biggest spike in COVID-19 cases this semester over the weekend. Cases continue to rise. As of Wednesday, there are 64 total cases according to the COVID-19 dashboard.
The campus opened Funnelle hall as new quarantine housing, in addition to Lonis and Moreland halls. The building can house 208 students.
In a statement Monday morning, SUNY Oswego President Deborah Stanley says the college will re-start testing across campus, identifying exposures in classrooms and testing students and faculty in exposed classes. The college will also work with the City of Oswego to test wastewater in the residence halls.

A Word’s Worth

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. Well members of SUNY Oswego’s Student Association took that saying even farther in their 1,000 Words Campaign on Thursday. The event was held in room 133 of the Marano Campus Center from 10AM to 4PM with another event later in the night in the Marano Auditorium from 6PM to 7PM. The afternoon event consisted of an activity students could do to help promote positivity and hope on campus.
Students would come in and choose any quote that means something to them. After choosing a quote, they’d decide where they wanted it to be written on them. An event volunteer would then write the quote on the student and a picture of them would be taken in front of a black back-drop. The student would then fill out a form with their information, and a member of the Student Association would email those pictures to them after the event. If a student did not want to have their picture taken, there was also a white board that students could write their quotes on.
Allif Karim is one of the students who took part in the event. He explained the reasoning behind why he chose the quote, “ Don’t change to be, be the change”.
“Growing up I used to be the typical kid trying to change myself, you know trying to see what fits, what’s hip. Now I understating that you don’t really have to do that, be someone who influences others,” said Alif.
Later that night the event held in the Marano Auditorium showcased all the pictures of students that had participated, along with guest speakers who explained the stories behind their quotes.
With evident tension between people within society today, this event was aimed at bringing the people of SUNY Oswego back together again. The student body has become separated, to a concerning degree, by views over recent events that have occurred in the United States. The 1,000 Words Campaign event was a way for students to positively express themselves through the inspiring words they each individually stand by, and share them with each other.
