The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team cruised to a 19-7 victory over the Utica Pioneers on Saturday. With the victory, the Lakers move to 4-2 overall while the Pioneers fall to 4-3.
Utica found the back of the net first but the momentum quickly changed as Oswego scored the remaining twelve goals of the first half. The Lakers added seven more in the final thirty minutes of the contest to seal the win. Gemma O’Kane and Toni Laneve each scored four goals while the nation’s leader in assists, Theresa Shattuck, contributed six helpers. She is now the team’s leader with 40 points (12 goals, 28 assists).
Goalie Angela Ponto recorded 12 saves while allowing three goals. Elianna Sanchez came in for the final seven minutes of the game, giving up four goals.
The Lakers will be back in action at Laker Turf Stadium next Saturday at 12 pm as they open up SUNYAC play against Brockport.

Resident Mentor Plans Never Before Attempted Overnight Trip
OSWEGO, NY — Students from Johnson Residence Hall at SUNY Oswego have recently embarked on an overnight trip to New York City. Johnson Hall resident mentor Jerimiah Butler says that this is the first time a member of campus residence life has organized an overnight trip with students.
“It’s an action-packed-like trip. We have no time for, you know, shenanigans here,” Butler said. “But we’re very excited, you know, it’s been a long planning process.”
The journey to New York had consisted of a concert from contemporary worship band, “Elevation Worship,” at the Playstation Theater in Times Square. The group had also made stops at Ellis Island, as well as the Statue of Liberty.
“It’s crazy how, like, it happened, because I wanted to see Elevation Worship for a long time,” student Amber Saint Joi said. “I was like, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to get here.’ And then this trip happened, so it’s like, ‘oh my god,’ so then we’re going to go see the Statue of Liberty, so definitely doing stuff for the residents, especially for all freshmen as well, it’s a new experience since people have never been to New York City.”
Resident mentor Butler hopes for this type of program to be held on an annual basis, with Niagara Falls possibly being the designated location for the next semester.
“We’re just dreaming big,” Butler said. “That’s one thing that my hall director here, Olive, really presses on us, it’s ‘think big.’ She’s been a huge help, as well as Linda, our FYRE coordinator. You know, a lot of meeting across this past month and a half or so, but this trip would not happen without their support.”
With a successful trip like this one, there’s no telling what amazing memories the RMs of SUNY Oswego will help make for students.

Tyler Hall Reopening and the Shift of Buildings

Tyler Hall, the home of the Theater and Art Departments at SUNY Oswego, has been closed for the past two years for remodeling. Shifting from Tyler Hall to Hewitt-Union was definitely a challenge for the Theater Department.
Theater student Taylor McCown spoke about how the Waterman Theater was the main theater where plays and musicals were at. She spoke about how shifting to the Hewitt-Union Ballroom was a challenge because they had to build their own stages when performing shows in there compared to Waterman Theater that had the stage set; just needing to set up the sets.
Instructor Greg Brewster has been associated with Tyler Hall ever since he was a student at SUNY Oswego. He spoke about how he went there as a student with lighting and sets in shows and he returned to Oswego with teaching in the same field.
Brewster also had some involvement with the remodeling of Tyler Hall. He spoke about where different things were going to go, such as lighting, and speakers in the theater itself.
Everyone in the departments are definitely interested in seeing the different changes that Tyler Hall’s going to offer. Taylor spoke of how there’s supposed to be an extra row in the Waterman Theater as well as different extensions to make shows a lot more interesting. She said that although most of the Theater Department will be returning to Tyler, the Costume shop will be temporarily remaining in Hewitt-Union for a while.
Tyler Hall will be reopening this summer to begin the Fall 2016 semester.

SUNY Oswego leaders send call to action to Congress
Some leaders of the SUNY Oswego community are urging congress to pass legislation in response to President Trump’s decision to end the Delayed Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
SUNY Oswego president, Deborah F. Stanley, Faculty Assembly Chair, Lisa Glidden and Student Association President, Dalton Bisson composed a call to action to send to the NYS Congressional Delegation on Thursday.
According to US Citizenship and Immigration services, the DACA program was announced by the Secretary of Homeland Security on June 15, 2012. It stated that “certain people who came to the United States as children and meet several guidelines may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years”. Under DACA they could could also renew this deferred action and it also made them eligible for work authorization.
Ending the DACA program would impact “nearly 80,000 individuals in our nation [who] now face devastating alteration to their lives and aspirations and do not deserve the fate unfairly placed upon them” Stanley, Glidden, and Bisson wrote in the call to action. The call to action was emailed to SUNY Oswego staff and students Thursday morning.
The email illustrated how much Stanley, Glidden, and Bisson value members of the DACA program, called “Dreamers”, at SUNY Oswego and across the country. “We, as Americans, must be willing to shoulder the responsibility to assure that our nation’s laws reflect highly moral and deeply ethical positions. To refuse to do so in this instance would seriously debase our heritage as a nation of immigrants and hope” Stanley, Glidden, and Bisson wrote.
