OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers built upon their already-established momentum from Friday, as they shot down the Red Dragons of Oneonta on Saturday, Oct. 4, in four sets.
The first set saw the Red Dragons establish the tempo early on, as they quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead, with exactly half of those six points coming off of errors from their opponent. However, the Lakers were undeterred, as they fought tooth and nail to make a comeback, and eventually took a 21-20 lead. This resurgence was built mainly by the trio of Gigi Basile, Priscilla McReynolds and Kalley Vugeteveen, as the three combined for 15 kills in the set, and helped lead the Lakers to a 26-24 win.
The second set was all Lakers in the initial stages, as Alaina Dudzinski contributed heavily in an offensive raid that facilitated a 9-2 lead early on. The Red Dragons attempted to make a comeback, and even tied it up 13-13 at one point, but the two-way attack of the Lakers would prove to be too much. Mya Bush strengthened her sophomore campaign, as she accounted for nine assists in the set, which aided the Lakers in finalizing a 25-21 win, for a 2-0 lead.
The Red Dragons were more synchronized than ever in the third set, as they seemingly came a step ahead of the Lakers in each facet of the game. The Lakers did keep it close throughout the first few back-and-forth possessions, but the Red Dragons, headlined by Colleen McCabe, Layla Pertchik and Emma Morretta, devised a tighter and more coordinated game plan to eventually pull away. Miscues turned out to be the Achilles heel for the Lakers, as they dropped the set, 25-19, on a service error, followed by the killshot from Keira Welsh.
The Lakers denied the Red Dragons any further momentum in the fourth and final set, even with a more balanced approach between both squads. The Lakers held a two-point advantage at one time, and ran away with it from there, as they tacked on five unanswered points, courtesy of aggressive individual showings from Grace Gdovin, Vugteveen and Bush. The Red Dragons also went on a little run of their own, too, showing signs of urgency in the late stages; however, those attempts turned sour, as Juliana Santafemia, CJ Eidem and McReynolds stood tall on the defensive end, and aided in a 25-18 win for the Lakers, allowing the team to hold their heads high in a 3-1 win.
The Lakers catch a three-day break in their schedule, as the homestand continues against Nazareth on Oct. 7 in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

Women’s Soccer falls to Potsdam in 2-0 Loss
OSWEGO — Women’s Soccer started their four-game home stand yesterday afternoon against Potsdam. Oswego gave up two goals in the first half and could not recover by the end of regulation. The team put five out of their seven total shots on net during the second half but could not get past the Bear’s goalkeeper. Emma Allen would make eight saves during the match up. The Lakers look to bounce back in today’s game versus SUNY Plattsburgh. The group is still looking for their first conference win of the season. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Laker Stadium.

Oswego State Baseball Hosts Fredonia for SUNYAC West Doubleheader
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Lakers Baseball team rolls into Saturday to start the month of May with a doubleheader series against the Fredonia Blue Devils. These two teams are on different ends of the spectrum when it comes to success and failure as Oswego is coming in on a 14 game winning streak after sweeping the University of Rochester successfully at the beginning of this week with scores of 23-7 and 9-4. As for the Blue Devils, the group has struggled this season by not winning a single game in the SUNYAC. The last time the Blue Devils squad won a SUNYAC matchup was April 21st of 2019. Their only wins this season come in the non conference doubleheader with two of their three being in their most recent contest vs Alfred State.
Things look pretty optimistic for the Oswego State Lakers as they have not lost to Fredonia on their home field since the 2011 season. Fredonia has lost 10 of the previous 11 meetings and their last win came in 2018 on a neutral site at Lake Myrtle Park with the Blue Devils edging the Lakers 6-5. However this season has been all Oswego, winning all four of their meetings and the Lakers outscoring the Devils 50-19 in those four matchups.
As Fredonia looks to find their first SUNYAC win in over a year as well as continue their 2 game winning streak, the Lakers will plan to push their streak to 15 games and potentially 16 with a sweep. In the last matchup on April 20th, Oswego State jumped out early with a 5-0 lead after the first inning and would gradually increase their lead as the game went on with a 10-5 victory. All eyes will be on Oswego’s offense who are currently averaging almost 12 runs per game as well as Ryan Weiss who had two home runs, one of them being a grand slam in their last double header against Rochester. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. for the first game and 3 p.m. for the second at the Laker Baseball Field.

Oswego Bucs win against Watertown IHC to Wrap Up 2021 Season
OSWEGO, NY — The Oswego Boys Buccaneers Hockey team wrapped up their 2021 season Saturday evening against the Watertown IHC Cavaliers. Oswego would win in dominating fashion as the Buccaneers would take the victory 6-1 over the Cavaliers. The Bucs would open the scoring in the first period as forward Brayden Miller tallied three goals in the stanza. Miller would not be stopped in the second period as the Buccaneer added another to finish with four goals in the game. Miller would finish with 14 goals over the course of the season and lead the team in that category. Lukas Cady would add another to the Oswego total in the second period with a short handed goal. During the third period, Oswego goaltender Brandon Demling continued to play well in between the pipes and only allowed one goal over the course of the whole game. Senior captain Adam Michalski would score an empty net goal to wrap up the contest.
Oswego improved to 8-8 and would end on a high note after losing the last two contests inside the Crisafulli Ice Rink. The Buccaneers were able to have an impressive record after facing Division I teams all season long. Oswego was able to go on the road and string together four wins after starting 3-6. The coaching staff and the rest of the team head into the off season graduating five seniors.
