Oswego State Softball Falls to Fredonia to Wrap Up 2021 Season

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Softball team finished their 2021 season on Wednesday at Fredonia for a SUNYAC West doubleheader. The Lakers were swept by the Blue Devils by scores of 12-8 and 7-0, ending the season on a two game losing streak.
Game one started with two runs in the top of the first inning to open the game from the Lakers. Oswego would continue their offensive dominance by snagging five more runs by the middle of the 4th inning, lead by Taylor DuBois and Aleah Yaizzo. The two combined for 4 runs, 7 hits, and 6 RBIs. Fredonia would have an answer in the bottom of the inning with six runs to add to their two runs from the first two innings. The Blue Devils would continue to push on offense and grabbed four more runs by the end of the sixth inning. The Lakers were unable to bounce back after only snagging one run in the sixth inning. Madison Hoeflich would get tagged with the loss after yielding just four earned runs and striking out four Blue Devils.
Heading into game two, the Lakers looked to bounce back and get another split to end the 2021 campaign. The Blue Devils never let the Lakers see the light as the Fredonia squad was able to get a 7-0 shutout victory. Fredonia tallied 6 runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a big lead over the Lakers. There were no runs scored after that point in the contest, and Oswego’s Leah Czerwinski secured a double that was the lone hit from the Lakers. Hoeflich and Samantha Morgan split time on the mound, each securing three strikeouts over the course of their time pitching.

In terms of the SUNYAC Championship, Oswego was eliminated from contention a week ago but could have played spoiler as Fredonia now holds second place in the division with a 9-7 record. Buffalo State is the only team in the SUNYAC West who has clinched a playoff spot. Geneseo and Brockport can still catch Fredonia for the second and final spot as the two teams have a doubleheader against each other this week. Oswego will finish in last in the division with a 5-11 conference record and overall post a 8-14 record.
For Gabrielle Rivers, her first season as head coach had its ups and downs as the Lakers split doubleheaders six times and had a three game win streak during the middle of the season. Zoe Mennig lead the Lakers at the plate with a .423 average and 30 hits over the course of the season. Madelana Wrubel lead in the runs category, coming to home plate 16 times. Hoeflich lead the small pitching squad with a 2.48 ERA with five wins and five losses on the mound. The Lakers return 13 out of 16 players next season as the group looks to get back to the regular conference format.

Women’s Lacrosse Advances to SUNYAC Semifinals

OSWEGO, NY – The Lakers hosted Oneonta over the weekend for the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs. Oswego put the pedal to the metal and refused to look back, sending the Red Dragons back to Oneonta with a 13 goal loss. It was a record day on Lake Ontario, as the women broke the single season record for total wins in a season, which was set in 2016. Another record was tied in the game, with junior Isabella Lembo recording NINE total goals, which has stood since 2009. Here’s how it happened…
The Lakers jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter with the help of a hat trick by Lembo in the first. Also scoring for Oswego in the first was Julia Quirk and Shae McConnell, who scored twice in quarter one. The second quarter was a nightmare for the Red Dragons, as Oswego exploded for seven goals in the quarter, giving up just one goal to Oneonta. To make matters worse, the Lakers scored seven straight goals before the Red Dragons could find an answer on offense. Lembo came out swinging for the Lakers, scoring her fourth goal just 13 seconds into the quarter. McConnell extended the Lakers lead to five, giving her a first half hat trick. Sela Wiley got in on the action, scoring three straight goals for Oswego, giving her a hat trick as well. Lembo gave the Lakers a ten goal lead over Oneonta, but the Red Dragons cut it back to nine with a last minute goal to end the first half.
The second half was a little less rough for Oneonta, going goal for goal with the Lakers in the third quarter of play. Oswego netted four third quarter goals, with Lembo scoring twice, McConnell adding her fourth goal, and Noelle Smith scoring her first of the game. The Lakers would go into the final quarter of play with a 17-8 lead over Oneonta. However, Oswego would put the game away in the fourth, netting five more goals, holding Oneonta to just one. Quirk and Lembo each recorded back-to-back goals in the quarter to help seal the deal over the Red Dragons. Sadie Zemanick scored the final goal for the Lakers with just eight seconds remaining in the game.
Oswego defeated Oneonta by a score of 22-9, sending a statement to the rest of the teams still in play. The Lakers will now travel to Geneseo for a rematch with the Knights in the SUNYAC semifinals. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3rd at 7pm.

NYSPHSAA Releases Guidelines for Upcoming Season

OSWEGO, NY — On July 16th, The New York State Public High School Athletic Association announced changes to how high school athletics will work in the 2020-21 season. This statement comes as schools across New York State prepare for public schooling to reopen for the new school year. After the cancellation of the Spring 2020 season last year, there has been many questions revolving around high school athletics heading into this coming season.
The decision made by the Officers of the NYSPHSAA included a few changes along with guidelines on how schools/teams should prepare moving forward. The first being the start of the Fall sports season being moved to September 21st, which was supposed to begin on August 24th. The NYSPHSAA President, Paul Harrica, stated that this date would be unrealistic due to the current threats of COVID-19. Another major change is the cancellation of all Fall Regional and State Championship events. This is change was obviously made to decrease traveling between sports teams as teams from different sections around the state would travel to one central location to play the final games of the season. Minor adjustments and recommendations were also stated. For instance, the group has waived the seven-day practice rule, encouraged geographic scheduling for games, and schools have the option to offer off-season conditioning workouts.
These changes of course affect the Oswego Buccaneers teams, as many student-athletes were looking forward to the season beginning in the month of August. WTOP 10 will continue to bring coverage on this matter, as students will hopefully be returning to school by the beginning of September.
