OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Basketball dropped a conference game to the Oneonta Red Dragons 76-66 for only their second SUNYAC loss of the season. The Lakers seven game winning streak snapped as the Lakers would allow 43 Red Dragon points in the second half in the defeat. Freshman Jeremiah Sparks once again lead the Lakers with 23 points as he hit seven field goals in his 40 minutes played. Joe Sullivan tallied 19 points and also hit seven field goals along with two 3-pointers.
Oswego falls to 5-2 in conference and hold the 4th spot in the standings as the Lakers look ahead to Potsdam Friday night. The Bears are 6-1 and tied for first in the SUNYAC standings. The Lakers will play right after Women’s Basketball as the Men’s game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Potsdam.

Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse Prepares for Geneseo
OSWEGO, N.Y. — After a 12-5 loss versus Brockport on April 16, the Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse team looks to find their first win of the condensed 2021 season with a battle against the Geneseo Knights. Although the Lakers have not won a game this season, they hold the record in history against the knights with 22 wins and 21 losses with the first matchup being in 1980. This will be the first game of a home and home series against Geneseo as they are scheduled to play the Knights on Saturday, April 24 at the College Stadium in Geneseo.
The history between these two teams have been extra competitive with their last matchup being in 2019 due to the cancelled season in 2020 and yielding a Knights win by a score of 14 to 13 despite a second half 10 goal push by the Lakers. Oswego is 2-8 since 2010 versus Geneseo in general and 10-11 at home against the Knights in history. As the Lakers look to salvage what is left of their season with three games remaining, they will turn to freshman midfielder Lucas Cloch who leads the team in points with 6 goals and 4 assists as well as rely on the man in between the pipes Kevin O’Donnell. The senior looks to stay strong to wrap up his career at Oswego State with 55 saves already on the season. Today’s SUNYAC West division matchup is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Laker Turf Stadium with WTOP 10 covering all the action from today’s contest.

Field hockey wins on road with big fourth quarter
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Lakers travelled to Rochester to take on the Nazareth Golden Flyers on Tuesday night in a Oswego 3-1 win. Oswego’s offense would start out swinging in the first quarter with four shots attempted and three shots on goal from Simzer, Darcy and Delaney but none would make it to the back of the goal. The Lakers defense was in control in the first quarter by mostly keeping the ball in midfield which only allowed Nazareth to attempt one shot. Oswego would get their second penalty corner of the evening, just over three minutes into the second quarter (18:06) but the Laker’s were unable to capitalize as the defense by Nazareth didn’t allow Oswego to attempt a shot. Just over five minutes into the second, Nazareth would finally have their first shot on goal but Oswego goalkeeper Erica Scheblein would kick the ball out of bounds and record her first save of the night. The last 8 minutes of the quarter the Lakers were able to get some shots on goal with two coming from Kacie Simzer and one coming from Bryleigh Beauchat. Altogether Oswego would finish the first half with seven shots, four landing on goal with a halftime score of 0-0
At the start of the second half the Golden Flyers decided to make a change with their goalie and Oswego attacked. Oswego would record seven shots in the third quarter with none getting past the fresh new goalie. But all that changed in the fourth quarter when 46 minutes in the scoreless streak broke from a goal from sophomore Kate McNally assisted by Molly Darcy(46:19). The Lakers scored again 5 minutes later(51:37) off of a penalty goal from Kaitlyn Mastracco, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead. 15 seconds later Nazareth answered back with a goal from Hannah James(51:52) to bring the Oswego lead to only one. But Nazareth defense couldn’t stop the Lakers as Kacie Simzer would grab another goal for Oswego(55:06) assisted by Taylin Bauer to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead. Nazareth would have chances at the end to score, but the Laker’s defense held up and didn’t allow any more goals for Nazareth to hold on to the win. Oswego out shot Nazareth by a 19-9 margin and Erica Scheblein continues her great season with five saves on the night.
Oswego is now 7-6 on the season. The Lakers will now return home on Saturday for senior day in a conference matchup against the Brockport Golden Eagles.

Dan Doolan and the Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse Team
Dan Doolan is a graduate student on the men’s lacrosse team. His senior season was canceled due to COVID-19 and he is the only one of the 15 seniors from the 2020 team to return this year. Spring student-athletes last year were granted an extra year of eligibility and Doolan, who was already planning on coming back for grad school will get to play another season of men’s lacrosse.
Dan Doolan has come a long way since his freshman year at Oswego, as a freshman, he had five points. In his junior year, he would change that to 31 points which included 22 goals. Doolan will be stepping into a leadership role this year as a great example of both grinding to develop as a player, as well as being the eldest member of the team. Head Coach Drew Bezek has high praise for this special member of his first recruiting class.
“It’s exciting to have somebody on the field that younger guys can look at his development, and understand that sometimes there’s a process to get where you want to be.” Bezek said.
Doolan is currently taking classes to get his MBA and plans to graduate in June. For the rest of the semester, he will get to experience the grind of balancing sport and school, which was taken away from so many student-athletes in the past year. The Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse team kick off their 2021 season Friday, April 2nd, on the road in Brockport.
