GENESEO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s basketball team took a trip southwest to Geneseo to take on the Knights on Tuesday. A rematch of the game played in Oswego a week prior saw a much closer game between the teams. Oswego would prevail with a 78-68 win. The Knights got going quick, grabbing the first eleven points of the game before Brendon Mulson would hit a three to get the Lakers on the board. The teams would trade baskets before the Lakers would start to close the gap. With six minutes remaining the Lakers went on a 12-4 run to close the gap to 36-38 going into the half. Jeremiah Sparks had thirteen in the first half lead the Lakers. The Lakers shot 12-30 (40%) from the field in the first half, and 4-14 (29%) from three. Geneseo shot 16-27 (59%) from the field in the first half.
The second half was much more even for both sides. Oswego slightly edging Geneseo in points 16-13 over the first 10 minutes to get the score to 52-51. Oswego would take over from there, with just under five minutes remaining in the game, Julien Crittendon made two free throws to extend the lead to 66-55. Crittendon had 15 of Oswego’s final 26 points and grab victory for the team 78-68. Crittendon led the team with 19 points. Jeremiah Sparks had 18 points to go with 6 rebounds. Christian Simmons had a double-double on the game, 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Devin Green was a rebound shy of his own with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Oswego handed Geneseo theirs fourth straight SUNYAC loss after the Knights came into the game a week ago undefeated in the conference.
Oswego now has a record of 16-1 (10-0 SUNYAC) and their win streak sits at thirteen games. The Lakers next game is home in the Max Ziel Gymnasium against the Oneonta Red Dragons. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. WTOP10 will have coverage of the game starting just before tip.

Mens Baseball Sweeps Fredonia in Weekend Action
ROCHESTER, NY – It was a successful weekend for the Lakers as they convincingly beat the Fredonia Blue Devils in both of their encounters this weekend. Game won was nothing short of a blowout that saw the Lakers dominate Fredonia with a final score of 12-1. The momentum was in favor of the Lakers from the start as they truly dominated this game. Fredonia would score their only run of the game in the top of the second inning. Senior Colin Williams was on fire this game as he finished with one run and two RBI’s. It really was a team effort however as the Lakers were firing on all cylinders from start to finish. The Lakers looked to take this momentum into the next day where they had a rematch against the Blue Devils.The Lakers kept the momentum rolling the next day when they knocked off Fredonia for the second time. This game was a lot closer and saw both teams fighting hard for a victory. The Lakers started off hot scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Blue Devils weren’t going to let history repeat itself as they bounced right back tying the game in the third. The Lakers then went on to score three more runs and the game looked like it was shaping up to be another Lakers victory. Fredonia was not done however as they came right back and scored three more runs to tie the game at six. After this the game got out of hand with the Lakers completely taking over. Freshman Emil Sander would score the Lakers final run to give them a five run victory as the Lakers completed the weekend sweep. The Lakers look to keep this momentum rolling as they head to New Paltz this Friday at 3pm.

Oswego Hockey returns with sizeable win over Carleton Place
OSWEGO — Men’s Hockey kicked off their 2019-2020 season with a win over Carleton Place Saturday night. The 9-1 victory in the special Teal Night jerseys saw multiple Lakers getting onto the score sheet by the time the buzzer went off. Senior Derek Brown would net two goals in the first period and one in the third to get a hat trick. Another notable standout was Carter Allen’s three-point effort (1 goal and 2 assists). Each Lakers goalie would spend time in the crease for the team totaling for a combined 19 saves. Men’s Hockey hits the ice on Saturday for one last exhibition game versus Nazareth College at the Marano Campus Center. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m.

Field Hockey battles in defensive matchup on the road
PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Lakers took a trip east to take on SUNYAC competitor St. John Fisher cardinals on Tuesday night in a tough 2-1 loss. The Cardinals started the night pushing a fast tempo against the Lakers, but Oswego played very sound defense in the first quarter not letting up any goals. Senior Goalkeeper Erica Scheblein shined while saving 4 shots on goal in the first quarter. In the start of the second quarter the Lakers finally got something going. About four minutes into the second quarter Kacie Simzer would score the only goal of the night for the Lakers at the 19:02 mark assisted by Nancy Pagliaroli. Oswego would control the the rest of the second quarter, testing the defense of St. John Fisher and they would go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
But Fisher didn’t take too much time to answer back. Just over two minutes in the 3rd Audrey Grieb would get the cardinals on the board with an unassisted goal. Not too long after that Cardinals received a penalty corner in the 35th minute that resulted in the go-ahead and eventually game-winning goal from Sam Choate. Oswego had plenty of chances with penalty corners, however, the Lakers were unable to take advantage the Lakers would need to make something happen offensively in the 4th quarter to get back into the game. St John Fisher then took command of possession in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals landed six shots in the final quarter, with the Lakers only landing one shot in the final two minutes of regulation. Scheblein would finish with ten saves on the night and Simzer would score her team leading 12th goal on the season.
Oswego will now travel to Cortland on Saturday, October 8th for a SUNYAC matchup against the Red Dragons. Oswego will be looking to get their first SUNYAC win of the season, while the Dragons will be looking to remain undefeated at home.
