OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Basketball rolled through the New Paltz Hawks Tuesday night as the Lakers won 80-55. Oswego took a commanding lead in the first half as the team scored 54 points compared to the Hawk’s 25. This is thanks to senior Joe Sullivan dropping 20 points due to seven field goals and two three pointers in his twenty two minutes played. Colby Moultrie stepped into the game and secured 12 points in only nine minutes played after netting four three pointers. This is Oswego’s 15th win of the season and ninth conference win to keep the Lakers in fourth place in the SUNYAC standings. Oswego State Baseball Hosts Fredonia for SUNYAC West Doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Lakers Baseball team rolls into Saturday to start the month of May with a doubleheader series against the Fredonia Blue Devils. These two teams are on different ends of the spectrum when it comes to success and failure as Oswego is coming in on a 14 game winning streak after sweeping the University of Rochester successfully at the beginning of this week with scores of 23-7 and 9-4. As for the Blue Devils, the group has struggled this season by not winning a single game in the SUNYAC. The last time the Blue Devils squad won a SUNYAC matchup was April 21st of 2019. Their only wins this season come in the non conference doubleheader with two of their three being in their most recent contest vs Alfred State.
Things look pretty optimistic for the Oswego State Lakers as they have not lost to Fredonia on their home field since the 2011 season. Fredonia has lost 10 of the previous 11 meetings and their last win came in 2018 on a neutral site at Lake Myrtle Park with the Blue Devils edging the Lakers 6-5. However this season has been all Oswego, winning all four of their meetings and the Lakers outscoring the Devils 50-19 in those four matchups.
As Fredonia looks to find their first SUNYAC win in over a year as well as continue their 2 game winning streak, the Lakers will plan to push their streak to 15 games and potentially 16 with a sweep. In the last matchup on April 20th, Oswego State jumped out early with a 5-0 lead after the first inning and would gradually increase their lead as the game went on with a 10-5 victory. All eyes will be on Oswego’s offense who are currently averaging almost 12 runs per game as well as Ryan Weiss who had two home runs, one of them being a grand slam in their last double header against Rochester. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. for the first game and 3 p.m. for the second at the Laker Baseball Field.

Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Team Looks to End Losing Streak
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team will look to avenge their 18-4 loss to Clarkson University as they battle SUNY Brockport on Saturday, April 17th. The race for the SUNYAC Championships is currently a three way battle in the west division with Brockport, Geneseo, and Oswego all being contenders for the two spots available for the postseason. Oswego has not seen the 5-1 Brockport squad yet this season, and the Lakers dropped their first game to Geneseo earlier this week. This conference matchup is important for Britt Howard and the rest of the Lakers if the group wants to remain in the hunt and make it into another post season, a streak that started back in the 2016 season. Oswego enters this matchup on two-game slide while the Golden Eagles ride a 6-game win streak which includes a 23-2 victory vs Buffalo State on April 16th.

The Lakers suffered their worst offensive performance of the season against Clarkson. They shot the ball just 16 times versus the Golden Knights, their lowest output of 2021. Although Oswego wasn’t able to score much, sophomore midfielder, Sela Wiley, continued her outstanding season, scoring 3-out-of 4 Lakers goals in the loss. Junior goalkeeper, Delaney Kendrick, will need to have a great defensive performance to suppress Brockport’s high-powered offense on Saturday. The Golden Eagles are averaging 16 points a game in 2021 and have scored 58 goals in their past three games. Four players have totaled at least 25 points for Brockport so far this season, including Cassidy Burnash (20 goals, 5 assists), Allison Jennings (18 goals, 9 assists), Natalie Strough (13 goals, 25 assists), and leading scorer Heather Conklin (33 goals, 7 assists). With only five games remaining in Oswego’s schedule, Saturday’s contest will have a pivotal impact not only on the Lakers postseason chances, but the entire SUNYAC west division standings. Face off is set for 1:00 PM at Laker Turf Stadium and WTOP 10 will have coverage of all the action.

Oswego State athletes earn academic honors

OSWEGO, NY ━ Over the past couple of weeks, Oswego State teams and student athletes have been rewarded with academic honors from organizations in their given sport. These awards were given out by national associations that are highlighting the work of collegiate athletes inside the classroom instead of on the field, track, ice, or court during the 2019-2020 seasons. Most of these groups are made up of college coaches across the United States that make these requirements for the honors.
On July 29th, the women’s volleyball team received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). This honor is given to volleyball teams that hold a grade point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale over the course of a whole academic year. The Lakers, who finished with a 3.43 team grade point average, were one of eight SUNYAC teams out of the ten institutions to receive the honor from this past year. This is their second time receiving the honor in the past three seasons under head coach JJ O’Connell.
The Oswego State indoor women’s track and field team was honored with the All-Academic Award for their achievements in the classroom during the 2019-2020 academic year. The Lakers received the award from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for having a team grade point average of 3.21 which is above the 3.1 benchmark set by the organization. The team was one of four SUNYAC institutions to receive the honor, and one of 209 colleges nationally. Senior Catarina Burke received the All-Academic Award individually as the athlete qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in high jump along with having a grade point average above a 3.30 during the semester.
On July 23rd, the National Association of Basketball Coaches released the student athletes that would be getting named to the 2019-20 Honors Court. This award is given out to men’s basketball players who exceed a grade point average of 3.2 at the end of their 2018-19 academic year. Seniors Tim Marshall and Brandan Gartland, along with junior Liam Sanborn were all named to the Honors Court. This is the second time for both seniors as the pair were awarded the honor in 2018-19. This is the team’s second time in two years with three players being named to the prestigious group.
The men’s golf team also received academic honors from last season as two players were named All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Senior Eric Schliecher and sophomore Ryan Fecco both received the awards after meeting the criteria of having a career grade point average above 3.2 and having a stroke average under 79.0. These two individuals helped the team to three tournament wins and a third place finish in the Fall Empire 8 Championship.
Two players from the Oswego State women’s ice hockey team were recently selected by the American Hockey Coaches Association for the All-American Scholar award. On August 17th, the AHCA announced that seniors Kate Randazzo and Eryn Stewart received the honors after exceeding a 3.75 GPA the fall semester. These accolades put the finishing touches on two historic careers for the two graduates. Randazoo finished second on the Oswego career assists list and in the top-10 in total points, along with being a two year captain for the Lakers. Stewart would conclude her collegiate career inside the top-10 in points, goals, and assists. The women’s hockey team finished 16-7-4 this past season and lost to Plattsburgh in the Northeast Women’s Hockey League Championship.
Congratulations to all the student athletes who received these academic honors along with the Oswego State teams that received overall academic awards. WTOP 10 will continue to update Oswego fans on the continuing development of COVID-19 and how it affects the Oswego State Lakers.
