Yesterday the Men’s hockey team traveled to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons in SUNYAC action. The Lakers would defeat the Red Dragons 4-1.
Each of the Lakers four goals were all scored by different players. Stephan Johnson would be the first Laker to score. He scored a power play goal to tie the Lakers with the Red Dragons with one minute left in the first period. At the halfway point of the second period, Kenny Neil, got his sixth goal of the year. With three and a half minutes left in the third, Chris Ragueso scored to put the Lakers up 3-1. Mitchell Herlihey would score with just under thirty seconds left in the game.
With the win, the Lakers improve to 5-0 on the year and are #1 in the SUNYAC with a 3-0 record. The Lakers will travel to Potsdam on Friday and to rival Plattsburgh on Saturday.

New York Says No to One-Week Fantasy Leagues
Daily fantasy sports leagues took a major hit in New York State today. State attorney general Eric T. Schneiderman announced earlier today that DraftKings and FanDuel, the two largest daily fantasy sports companies, stop accepting bets from New York State. He said the daily games are considered illegal gambling under NYS law.
The multibillion dollar industry has approximately 500,000 participants in New York, and the order is a major blow. Schneidermann is historically a consumerprotection advocate, and legal experts say other states may follow suit. Schneiderman said ““ It is clear that DraftKings and FanDuel are the leaders of a massive, multibilliondollar scheme intended to evade the law and fleece sports fans across the country… Today we have sent a clear message: not in New York, and not on my watch.”
DraftKings spokesperson Sabrina Macias said “We’re disappointed he hasn’t taken the time to meet with us or ask any questions about our business model before his opinion.” DraftKings sent an email asking its players to contact the attorney general to protect their “…right to keep playing daily fantasy sports.” Macias also said that the company strongly disagrees with the order and plans to pursue all available legal options.

SUNY Oswego’s College Republicans Club uses beach ball to promote free speech

OSWEGO, NY – On Wednesday October 25th, the College Republicans Club at SUNY Oswego put up a 8-foot beach ball in front of Penfield Library to promote free speech. The beach ball was used as a medium to encourage students to write anything they wanted whether they were political views or their Instagrams.
President of the College Republicans Club Tyler Toomey said that using the beach ball as a medium for free speech is an event that is being held on other campuses along the east coast.
“It’s a pretty big event through some nonprofit organizations nationwide so we got in contact with them and they actually drove the ball from D.C down to us last night,” Toomey said.
Student Shelby Stewart took the opportunity to express her political views.
“I wrote that I support Trump…because a lot of people wrote a lot of liberal things and I feel like there’s not very many Republicans on campus,” Stewart said.
Stewart said she hopes that by having the beach ball present that it will inspire unity on campus.
“I think if anything it’s going to unite everybody because they see that the College Republicans aren’t just saying, ‘You can’t write anything on it if it’s not Republican’. So I think hopefully, it just going to unite campus and show that people can get along,” Stewart said.

Artswego: The Shape of Things
On November 7th, on a Wednesday, Oswego Theatre Department premieres their play “Shape of Things” originally written by Neil Labute.
Students in all years participate in this production and it is all prepared for the showing of the new show. Students such as Cassandra Slough and Adam Sommer took on the lead roles of this play.
Mya Brown, Director of the play and Assistant professor of theater tells her experience directing and the significance of the play. “There are some special messages within the play I would the audience to reflect on those things, what they think there are, so I don’t want to give anything away but I think the audience will definitely be challenged in their perspective of what beauty is, what art is, and how far in creating art.” She said. “I love to direct and it was amazing working with the other cast/staff members.” She also said.
Shelby Gilbert, one of the assistant director of the play also commented about the production. “It’s a great show. It is. This cast has worked so hard on this show. They have really put their all into the show and done some amazing work and I feel like everybody can learn a little something from the show and they can relate to different parts of the show.” She said.
Based on the story of Neil Labute, it emphasizes on the topic of relationships, identity, choices, and morals. With the main characters, Evelyn (Cassandra) and Adam (Adam), they both will play out the theme of the play.
