OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s soccer team travelled to New Paltz to take on the Hawks in a SUNYAC semi-final game today. After a hard fought game the Lakers came out on top 1-0. It was a defensive first half, with Oswego getting five shots on goal and New Paltz getting three shots on goal. The Lakers got themselves on the board early in the second half. A cross from Hajoon Lee would find the head of Kieran Gilroy and then the back of the net for the only goal of the entire contest. Oswego goal keeper Brian Terra would come up big for Oswego, he had two saves on the day including a save on a New Paltz penalty kick in the 71st minute.
Oswego will travel to Cortland on Saturday for the SUNYAC championship game, the first in Laker’s program history. The Lakers played the Red Dragons on October 16th at Laker Turf Stadium. The Lakers lost 3-0, despite Brian Terra’s seven saves. Cortland comes into this game ranked #5 in the country and are coming off a win against Buffalo State 2-1 in their semi-final matchup. The contests kicks off at 1:00 p.m. on SUNY Cortland’s campus.

Oswego State men’s lacrosse rolls through Plattsburgh State
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team traveled to North Country on Saturday to take on the Plattsburgh State Cardinals for a SUNYAC conference match up. Oswego State defeated the Cardinals by a score of 19-7 and improves to an overall record of 6-2 in the 2022 season. The Lakers are also 1-0 in conference play and are on the five game winning streak heading into another conference game on Tuesday.
Oswego State opened up the scoring in the first quarter which ended with a 6-0 lead for the Lakers. The Cardinals would tally three in the second quarter but Oswego State answered with another five goals. Ryan Eccles lead the offense with four goals and attacked Weston Gray tallied three goals and one assist. In the faceoff circle, Logan Prescott went 16 for 25 against the Cardinals.
In-between the pipes, starter Aiden Kenyon and back up Jeff Kinyoun combined for 7 goals against and 12 saves. Kenyon would pick up the win after playing over 50 minutes in net and Kinyoun taking over to finish up the contest. The tandem from Plattsburgh combined for 19 goals against and 14 total saves.
Oswego State turns their attention to SUNY Potsdam Tuesday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium. The Lakers are on a four game win streak against the Bears and have an overall record of 26-15-0 against the SUNY Potsdam program. These two teams played back on April 10th, 2019 at SUNY Potsdam and the Lakers took the win 11-9. The game is set to start at 4:00 p.m. on SUNY Oswego’s campus as the Lakers look to stay undefeated in conference play so far this season.

Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Team Falls in Season Finale
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team lost their fifth and final game of the 2021 season, dropping to no. 16 ranked Geneseo Knights, 20-3. This was Oswego’s fourth straight loss to Geneseo and second loss in 2021 as they were previously defeated 22-9 on April 12th.
The Knights opened Sunday’s game with back-to-back goals from senior attack, Hannah Marafioti. They then followed that up with an 11-0 scoring run and held the Lakers scoreless until the opening minutes of the second half. Freshman attack, Isabella Lembo, responded with back-to-back goals of her own to put Oswego on the board, though the Lakers were unable to generate enough offense to keep up with Geneseo. The Knights defense was dominant throughout the entire game, holding the Lakers to just 11 total shots, including 5 in the first half. Geneseo also caused Oswego to turn the ball over 26 times, whereas they had only 18. Three Knights had hat-tricks in Sunday’s matchup, including Jacqui Thorsen (4), Emma Gaenzle (3), and Hannah Marafioti (3). Freshman midfielder, Shae McConnell, also scored a goal for Oswego, bringing her season total to 19.
Oswego honored two seniors on Sunday, including Kamryn Sherman and Lynsey Roth. Roth is an attack/midfield hybrid from Syracuse. She just joined the Women’s Lacrosse team this year and appeared in three games for the Lakers in 2021 after playing for the Oswego State Women’s Soccer team. Roth was able to add depth on a smaller roster under head coach Britt Howard. Sherman was a four-year starter for Oswego and appeared in 45 games. She’s totaled 50 goals and 36 points in her collegiate career and will finish with a .562 all-time shot percentage. Both athletes will surely be missed by teammates, coaches, and fans alike for the contributions on and off the field.
Following an unprecedented and abrupt end to their 2020 season, the Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team finishes the 2021 season 3rd in the SUNYAC West division with a record of 3-4. Although it wasn’t the outcome many were hoping for, there are many positive things to take away from this season for Coach Britt Howard and the Lakers. In a reduced season, Oswego had four players total 20 or more points in 2021: Sela Wiley (34), Logan Castiglione (26), Shae McConnell (23), and Isabella Lembo (20). Oswego Women’s Lacrosse has an abundance of young, talented athletes who are only going to get better moving forward. With more experience under their belts, the Lakers are sure to be contenders in upcoming seasons. Oswego State unfortunately wrapped up their season, but Brockport and Geneseo will represent the division in the SUNYAC Championship this coming weekend. Men’s Basketball takes pod, moves on to sweet sixteen
SWARTHMORE P.A. — The Oswego State Men’s basketball team took the the road last weekend to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania for the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. After Monday’s selection show it was announced that they would play Hood College of Frederick, Maryland in the first round, with the winner moving on to take on the winner of Swarthmore and Keene State of New Hampshire.
Oswego and Hood were the second game in the entire tournament to tip off, with the time set for 3:05 Friday afternoon. Jamal Achille started the scoring for both sides with an early three, but that was quickly followed by six straight points from Hood for an early 6-3 lead. The two sides kept it close throughout the early part of the first half, but the three point barrage from Hood’s Evan Wang saw them grab a nine point advantage, 25-16, with nine to play. The Lakers then found their stride, an 18-2 run to end the half saw them go to the locker rooms up 34-27. Evan Wang had 18 of Hood’s 27 in the first half. The teams traded baskets to start the second half, with Oswego extending their lead to just ten, 47-37 with just under 14 minutes to play. Hood then went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to five, and after a made Oswego basket, hit a three to cut it to four. Then the Laker’s hit their stride again, a 14-2 run saw the lead jump to 66-50 with seven and a half minutes to play. Hood fought the rest of the game, but the lead never dropped below nine for Oswego, and the Lakers moved on to the round of thirty-two with a 82-73 victory. Jamal Achille led Oswego with 20 point and 12 rebounds, nine of them offensive. Four other Lakers had nine or better in the points column, Devin Green (17), Jeremiah Sparks (10), Brendon Mulson (9), and Julien Crittendon (9). Evan Wang (21) came in second in points for Hood to his twin brother Mason Wang (23).
Keene State won the other matchup in the pod over hosts Swarthmore, so the two sides met Saturday afternoon for a chance to move into the sweet sixteen. Jamal Achille picked up where he left off and scored nine points in the first six minutes, with Ahkee Anderson contributing four, to give the Lakers a 13-10 lead. Devin Green found his scoring stride, scoring seven of Oswego’s next 12 to give them a 25-14 lead with seven to go in the half. The Lakers kept pushing, and by halftime they led 48-28. Jamal Achille and Christian Simmons each had 13 in the half, with Anderson and Green both having nine. Keene State was led by Octavio Brito who had 12. Jamal Achille hit the twenty point mark with 15 still to play on a two-handed slam down low, and Oswego had a 57-32 lead. Keene State then went on a 19-9 run to close the gap to 15 with just under eight minutes in the game. Keene State cut the lead to 13 with 5:10 to go. Oswego hit a couple of shots to push the lead back to 18, and then both sides went scoreless for a little over two minutes. Hunter Cole had five of Oswego’s last seven in the final minute of play, and Oswego moved on with another win, 84-63. Jamal Achille again led the team, this time with 22, and Ahkee Anderson had his season high with 17. Christian Simmons added 16 of his own off the bench, and Devin Green had 11 to close out the Lakers in double digit scoring. Octavio Brito led Keene State in scoring with 24, and Mason Jean-Baptiste had 19, no other players had over 5 five points.
The Lakers and their fifth ranked defense now head to Marietta, Ohio to take on the Marietta Pioneers in the sweet sixteen. Marietta hosted the first two rounds of play as well, beating Madaille College 91-79 in the first round and the University of Rochester 88-83 in the second round. Marietta is led by 17.3 point-per-game scorer, senior guard Jason Ellis, who had 25 in the first round, but was held to only 10 in the second. Their second leading scorer is senior guard Lukas Isaly who averages 15.3, he had 15 in the first round, and had a game high 33 vs Rochester. They also have two other ten plus point scorers in seniors Tim Kreeger and Mason Lydic, who average 11.8 and 10.8 respectively. Marietta is 20th in the country in team scoring at 84.7 points per game. The winner of this matchup plays the winner of Christopher Newport University of Newport News, Virginia and Stockton University of Galloway Township, New Jersey.
