OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego men’s soccer team travelled to Cortland Saturday afternoon to take on the Red Dragons in the SUNYAC tournament championship game. The Lakers had fought hard to make it to the tournament and then make it all the way to the championship game, but their exciting run came to an end as they would fall 6-0. Cortland got themselves on the scoreboard early when they would get to a loose ball in the box and score. The Red Dragon’s would net another before the half to make it 2-0. Cortland kept their momentum going in the second half, getting their third goal seven minutes in, and their fourth seven minutes later. They converted two more times before the end of the game, making it 6-0. Cortland dominated the second half of the game, getting fourteen shots to Oswego’s three. Oswego had a total of six shots in the game, two each from Ryan Young and Kyle Gehnrich. Oswego’s Caleb Munski, Kieran Gilroy, and Hajoon Lee all earned All-Tournament honors.

Oswego State without athletics for Fall 2020
OSWEGO, NY — As students begin to make their return to the shores of Lake Ontario, Oswego State will be without collegiate sports for the fall semester due to COVID-19. SUNYAC Conference postponed their Fall 2020 sports, like other conferences, back in the month of July due to the pandemic. The Men’s Golf team will also have to wait until Spring 2021 as the Empire 8 conference postponed the fall season as well. Most recently, the Northeast Women’s Hockey League that contains the Oswego Women’s Hockey team moved the start date for their season to January 1st, to follow suit with the rest of the conferences. This means all Oswego State teams will be without intercollegiate competition till the start of the new calendar year. Along with NCAA sports, all club sports through the school have been postponed till 2021.
However, this does not mean the teams will not be able to keep in game shape. Over the course of the fall semester, Oswego State teams will be able to have team practices during a certain period of time. Stated in the Oswego Forward Plan, the Athletics Department has created a four-week period after the return to activity period when teams can conduct up to 16 practices. The Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, and Field Hockey teams will begin practice the week of August 31st. The Women’s Volleyball, Men’s Golf, and Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams will begin the following week of September 7th. The next week, the Baseball, Softball, and Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse teams will begin practicing, these being all Spring sports. Winter sports can start their practices in early October but will end before Thanksgiving Break. Obviously, the winter sports teams will begin their scheduled games as early as the first week of January if the threat of COVID-19 is minimal in the eyes of the athletic conferences and colleges.
With no Live Sports to broadcast during the Fall 2020 semester, WTOP 10 will have a different semester ahead of us. The Live Sports Department still has plans for this semester as the group looks to deliver content to the Oswego sports community until the return of the Lakers. Oswego State women’s basketball team falls to Geneseo despite mighty defensive performance
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s basketball team fell to SUNY Geneseo 49-36 on Wednesday despite a tremendous defensive effort. This marks the tenth loss of the season for the Lakers and first loss to Geneseo, with a rematch looming next Tuesday on the road.
Both teams came out of the gate competitive as ever with the Knights holding a 17-9 lead going into the second quarter. After a 4-0 run by the Lakers, the Knights closed out the remaining 5:14 of the half on a 13-0 run to bring their halftime lead to 17. To begin the second half, the Lakers came out swinging as they closed the lead to 32-20, backed by four points and an assist from Logan Nyemchek. Oswego won the third quarter, outscoring the Knights 13-9. Heading into the final quarter, a Chastin Giles three-pointer brought the Lakers within eight points of tying. However, Geneseo would go on to close out the final six minutes of regulation as they held the Lakers to just one point in that time.
Freshman Shania Iglesias lead the team in scoring with nine points while also collecting five rebounds. Claire Skowronski and Elaina Johnson each finished with two steals in a great defensive effort. Overall, the Lakers forced 22 turnovers and held the Knights to just 32% shooting from the field. They also held Geneseo to their second lowest scoring performance of the season.
With this loss, the Lakers fall to 3-10 on the season and 0-7 in SUNYAC play. They will have the opportunity to bounce back against SUNY Cortland on Saturday before a rematch with SUNY Geneseo on Jan. 25. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at Cortland.

Oswego State women’s basketball concludes 2021-22 season celebrating two seniors
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s basketball team concluded the 2021-22 season last weekend, honoring seniors Danielle Caivana and Raiven Encarnacion in the process. The Lakers fell to SUNY Brockport 56-55 on Friday and Fredonia 68-60 on Saturday, bringing their season record to 5-19. In their second matchup of the season, the Lakers and Golden Eagles played a hard fought game from start to finish. After the opening tip, Brockport took an early 8-6 lead before the Lakers went on a 14-2 run. With 2:42 left in the first quarter, Oswego led 20-10. Danielle Caivana scored nine points in the quarter, shooting 3-3 from behind the arc. Heading into the second frame, Brockport stormed back to knot the game up at 20. However, eight points from Logan Castiglione helped the Lakers regain the lead and go into the half up 37-25. After a back-and-forth third quarter, Brockport brought the deficit to seven entering the final ten minutes. The Golden Eagles continued to fight down the stretch and pulled the game within two points with just over a minute remaining in regulation. Castiglione, who was great defensively in this game, came up with a clutch steal to maintain the Oswego lead with 30 seconds remaining. After some scrappy play, an Oswego foul put Brockport on the free throw line down just one point. The Golden Eagles nailed both free throws to take their first lead since the opening quarter. The Lakers got a last-second shot off in time, but it would fall short, giving Brockport the victory. Shania Iglesias finished the contest with 16 points while Caivana (15) and Castiglione (10) both scored double-digit points.
Before the tip-off of Saturday’s senior night game, Oswego celebrated Caivana and Encarnacion for their accomplishments with the team. Both teams exchanged a flurry of baskets throughout the first quarter, with Fredonia up 18-16 heading into the second. The Lakers quickly took their first lead of the game off a Diamond Pickett three-point shot. The Blue Devils and Lakers went shot-for-shot throughout the frame, with Fredonia escaping the the quarter up 32-27. To begin the second half, Fredonia went on a small scoring run. Though, Encarnacion scored two buckets and a free throw to bring the deficit to five. Despite Oswego’s persistence, Fredonia went into the final quarter with a nine point lead. The Lakers would bring the game within six points with 30 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late for the home team. Diamond Pickett finished with her fifth double-double of the season, putting up 19 points, 16 boards, three assists, and three steals. Encarnacion and Caivana combined for 25 points in their final game as Lakers. With this win, the Blue Devils clinched the sixth and final playoff berth in the SUNYAC Championship.
Although it wasn’t the outcome the team was hoping for, the Lakers have a bright future lead by their young star athletes. Oswego saw major contributions from the likes of Catie Lilly, Chastin Giles, and Diamond Pickett throughout the course of the season and will look to build upon their performances from this season. The team will reload in the offseason and look towards the 2022-23 season, where they hope to make it back to the SUNYAC playoffs once again.
