OSWEGO — This coming Saturday, Men’s Soccer continues their strong SUNYAC schedule by hosting nationally ranked Cortland at Laker Stadium. The SUNY rivalry between the Lakers and Red Dragons continue with both teams starting off conference play undefeated. Both schools started their SUNYAC campaign playing Brockport and Geneseo, but the Lakers look to have the upper hand due to the two shutouts that were results of stellular goalkeeper work from Brian Terra. Terra recently won his third straight SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week with his performance this past weekend. Even though the Lakers haven’t beaten the Red Dragons since 2006, they will look towards their defensive play to continue their successful start of conference play. Oswego fans can catch the Men’s Soccer game vs. SUNY Cortland at Laker Stadium along with online, right here at WTOP10.com. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

#15 Men’s Hockey drops game to #7 Utica College
OSWEGO, NY — #15 Men’s Hockey welcomed in #7 Utica College Friday night for another nationally ranked match up, which is the second in as many games for the Lakers. The Pioneers would win 4-3 in a tight match up which featured freshman Alex DiCarlo tallying two assists and captain Josh Zizek tying the game halfway through the third period. Senior Cedric Hansen would give up the go ahead goal but played strong after reliving starter David Richer in the first stanza of the second period. This is Oswego’s fourth lost to nationally ranked opponents as the move forward with an overall record of 7-6. The Lakers are set to play the Elmira College at 7 p.m. in the Marano Campus Center.

Marano Campus Center Ice Rink Melts
OSWEGO, NY — As playoffs are upon us at SUNY Oswego for both the Men’s and Women’s Hockey teams, this week has been a challenge for both along with other groups that call the Marano Campus Center Ice Rink their home. Tuesday Evening, reports from individuals that cover both teams like Ben Grieco, from the Oswegonian, tweeted about the ice chilling system failing at the ice rink. The compressor in the system broke, resulting in the ice surface beginning to melt. Wednesday morning, the ice crew began removing the ice due to the ice melting. Currently, all that lies in the rink is the concrete bottom as we wait for updates on the situation. This problem has many implications, as teams are starting to prepare for this weekend’s playoff games.
Women’s Hockey is set to host Morrisville on Saturday for the first round of the NEWHL playoffs. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. as the two seed is looking to secure a win, a most likely move on to play Plattsburgh in the finals. Men’s Hockey is supposed to host the highest remaining seed as quarter final games are being played on Wednesday. This game is set to play at 7 p.m. from the Marano Campus Center. Due to the current standing of the rink, these games may get moved to a new location so that games can be played at the correct times. Although all of this is not confirmed yet, Oswego Athletics has begun looking at possible options for these games, most likely being a place in Syracuse that has the capacity for two college games.
Even though both of these teams are affected the most from this problem, other teams are feeling the results. The D1 ACHA Hockey team has had to move practices to a new location as the team is preparing for their playoffs this weekend in Buffalo. The Women’s Club team has also had to cancel practice for this week.

Oswego Victorious in Season Opener
OSWEGO NY – Oswego welcomed Wilkes University out of Pennsylvania to kick off the 2025 season. After a physical and hard-fought game by both sides, Courtney Key would help Oswego pick up the first win of the 2025 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were eager to get this first game going and that was evident as both teams shot out of a cannon to start the game. Nothing came easy in the early going as every ball was fought for and it was extremely physical.Oswego was the first one to strike as they found the back of the net in the first 10 minutes of play. Off a corner kick was the veteran, Courtney Key, to find the back of the net at 9:34. The header would sneak over the stretched hand of the Wilkes goaltender, Ava Long. The corner was sent in by Amber McDermott. The Senior-to-Senior connection got the Lakers up 1-0 to kick off the 2025 season.
Just a few minutes later Oswego extended the lead. Key would again capitalize on a Laker corner. Key would slide across the box with an extremely athletic play to put Oswego up by 2. The assist would go to Kyla Sustad, the first of many for the junior.
It took a while for the Colonels to get back in this one. In the 33rd minute, Wilkes would finally get their foot in the door. Jess Shea found nylon off a corner kick from the Sophomore, Elena Krajain. It was 2-1 going into half in the season opener for the Lakers.
The first half energy seemed to dwindle during the break. The second half started out much slower. Both teams had opportunities, but each team had a scorching hot defense that wouldn’t let up.Things shifted in the 33rd minute of the second period. A pass came from Kayla Baca and Schmitt did the rest. Schmitt would right foot it, and after a tip off the hand of Long, Schmitt found her first goal of the season. The lead was now 3-1 with the Lakers in complete control.
The Lakers would prevail after astounding success on the defensive side of the ball. Oswego wouldn’t pick up a save in this time period as the Colonels wouldn’t be able to get anything on goal. With a balanced attack through and through, the Lakers won the contest, 3-1.
WHAT’S NEXT
Oswego takes on the Knights of Geneseo on Tuesday. Oswego faces a challenge as the Knights had an impressive season in 2024 finishing 13-5-3. Kickoff will be at 4:00pm at Geneseo College Stadium.Luke Belanger’s POTG – Courtney Key (2 goals on 4 shots)
