OSWEGO — For the sixth straight year, the Oswego High School boys volleyball team has been crowned the champions of Section III. They defeated Jamesville-Dewitt winning three sets to two. Riley Mahoney overcame a sore shoulder to account for 18 of the team’s 48 kills. Freshman Nate Nevinny was just as dominant as he finished with 44 assists. The Buccaneers will look to keep their season going on Friday as they take on Eastchester from Section I in Fayetteville. First serve is at 5 p.m.

Oswego State men’s hockey blanks Morrisville to earn fourth shutout of season
MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team defeated Morrisville State 4-0 on Wednesday. This victory marks the 11th SUNYAC win for the Lakers and second win over the Mustangs in the 2021-22 season.
It was a back-and-fourth, scrappy first period that saw neither team find the back of the net. However, Oswego’s defense was stifling from the opening puck drop as they held Morrisville to just three shots in the first stanza compared to the Lakers 15. The Lakers remained relentless on the offensive end to start the second period, firing off 10 shots in the frame’s first nine minutes. Though, it wasn’t until the 13:17 mark where sophomore Connor Sleeth got things rolling for Oswego, scoring his sixth goal on the year. Ryan Bunka and Alex DiCarlo were awarded assists on the play. Just four minutes later, captain Travis Broughman put the Lakers up 2-0 as he tallied his eleventh goal of the year. To finish the period, Oswego went on to score another goal with Alex DiCarlo “one-upping” Broughman for his twelfth goal of the season. The team captain would not be upstaged for long however. As the Lakers took command in the final period, Broughman tacked on his second goal of the game, tying DiCarlo at 12 for the team lead. The Oswego defense, lead by senior Steven Kozikoski, played phenomenal all game long. The “Wizard of Koz” raked in 13 saves en route of earning his fourth shutout of the season. The team as a whole dominated the stat sheet, totaling 51 shots, 35 shots on goal and winning 36 faceoffs.
With this win, the Lakers improve to 16-5-1 on the season and currently sit atop the SUNYAC standings with 34 points. With just two regular season games remaining before SUNYAC playoffs begin on Feb. 23, Oswego will look to continue this momentum and finish the season strong. The men’s hockey team concludes the season with a weekend doubleheader against Fredonia on Feb. 18 and Buffalo State on Feb. 19. Puck-drop is set for Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Fredonia.

Oswego State women’s hockey comes up short against Plattsburgh this weekend
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — It was a rough weekend for the Lakers as they suffered two unfortunate losses, one being a NEWHL game. The Lakers went on the road to take on Plattsburgh State in their first meeting of the weekend. They were hungry for victory and proved it when they went up 3-0 in the first period. Just nine minutes into the contest senior Chyne Kennedy put the lakers on the board with an assist from Mia Conboy. Sophomore Rachel Corbett added to the lakers lead with eight minutes left in the first. Just before the first period came to an end, Sophomore Sophia Kyrkostas scored with assists from Simone Bednarik and Ariella Haas capping off a dominant first period. It was all downhill after the first as the Lakers lost the momentum they had built up, eventually letting up six goals by the end of the contest to conclude Plattsburgh’s three point victory.
The Lakers went back to work against Plattsburgh State the following day in hopes of getting some revenge after their heartbreaking loss. During the first period it was neck to neck with freshman Ashlyn McGrath putting the Lakers on the board just two minutes into the contest. With six minutes into the first Plattsburgh tied the game up. From there the momentum was in their favor and the Cardinals went on to score two more goals in the second. Down two goals the Lakers tried to make some magic happen and pull off a comeback, unfortunately they couldn’t get anything cooking and ultimately lost 4-1. The Lakers look to bounce back after these two losses when they go on the road to play William Smith College this Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. in Geneva. Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Team Falls in Season Finale
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team lost their fifth and final game of the 2021 season, dropping to no. 16 ranked Geneseo Knights, 20-3. This was Oswego’s fourth straight loss to Geneseo and second loss in 2021 as they were previously defeated 22-9 on April 12th.
The Knights opened Sunday’s game with back-to-back goals from senior attack, Hannah Marafioti. They then followed that up with an 11-0 scoring run and held the Lakers scoreless until the opening minutes of the second half. Freshman attack, Isabella Lembo, responded with back-to-back goals of her own to put Oswego on the board, though the Lakers were unable to generate enough offense to keep up with Geneseo. The Knights defense was dominant throughout the entire game, holding the Lakers to just 11 total shots, including 5 in the first half. Geneseo also caused Oswego to turn the ball over 26 times, whereas they had only 18. Three Knights had hat-tricks in Sunday’s matchup, including Jacqui Thorsen (4), Emma Gaenzle (3), and Hannah Marafioti (3). Freshman midfielder, Shae McConnell, also scored a goal for Oswego, bringing her season total to 19.
Oswego honored two seniors on Sunday, including Kamryn Sherman and Lynsey Roth. Roth is an attack/midfield hybrid from Syracuse. She just joined the Women’s Lacrosse team this year and appeared in three games for the Lakers in 2021 after playing for the Oswego State Women’s Soccer team. Roth was able to add depth on a smaller roster under head coach Britt Howard. Sherman was a four-year starter for Oswego and appeared in 45 games. She’s totaled 50 goals and 36 points in her collegiate career and will finish with a .562 all-time shot percentage. Both athletes will surely be missed by teammates, coaches, and fans alike for the contributions on and off the field.
Following an unprecedented and abrupt end to their 2020 season, the Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team finishes the 2021 season 3rd in the SUNYAC West division with a record of 3-4. Although it wasn’t the outcome many were hoping for, there are many positive things to take away from this season for Coach Britt Howard and the Lakers. In a reduced season, Oswego had four players total 20 or more points in 2021: Sela Wiley (34), Logan Castiglione (26), Shae McConnell (23), and Isabella Lembo (20). Oswego Women’s Lacrosse has an abundance of young, talented athletes who are only going to get better moving forward. With more experience under their belts, the Lakers are sure to be contenders in upcoming seasons. Oswego State unfortunately wrapped up their season, but Brockport and Geneseo will represent the division in the SUNYAC Championship this coming weekend.
