ALLEGHENY, N.Y.  The Oswego State baseball team travelled to Fredonia for the final weekend of the season before SUNYAC playoffs. A three game set with game one on Friday and the other two games Saturday.

The first game of the series was played at SUNY Brockport, and Oswego showed why they are the best team in the conference and one of the best in the nation. In only the top of the first inning, the Lakers asserted their dominance. The first three batters reached base, and Paul Tammaro scored during Lukas Olsson’s  at bat on a wild pitch. Olsson would then clear the bases with a three run home run to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. Two more runs crossed the plate before the end of the inning, Fredonia grabbed their bats for the first time down 6-0. A scoreless bottom half of the first and top of the second led to Fredonia finding the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Back to back singles were followed by a double scoring one, and then two ground outs scored two more, Fredonia only down 6-3. The top of the fourth was when the Lakers struck again, sending home four runners for a 10-3 lead. A Jacob Levine grand slam in the fifth made in 14-3. In the sixth inning two more runs scored for the Lakers making it 16-3. A solo shot in the bottom of the seventh for Fredonia made it 16-4. Seven runs scored for Oswego in the eight making it 23-4. The Blue Devils scored three in the eighth and one in the ninth making it 23-8, but Oswego offensive dominance reigned supreme in this one. Five Lakers had two hits during the game. Lukas Olsson and Jacob Levine both had four RBIs. Jacob Sanders started for the Lakers, going 4 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, walking one and striking out three.

Games two and three were played at Alleghany High School. Game two was much different than game one. The first two innings were scoreless. In the top of the third, Paul Tammaro hit a one-out solo shot to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, a Julien Drew bases loaded single brought home the second run of the game and a Paul Tammaro single an out later drove home the third. In the bottom of the fourth, a two run shot by the Blue Devils brought closed the gap to 3-2. In the top of the fifth, Lukas Olsson answered the two run homer with one of his own. The pitching took over the rest of the game, no runs scoring through the remaining two and a half innings. Paul Tammaro led the Lakers with three hits. Tammaro and Lukas Olsson tying for the RBI lead with two each. Kieran Finnegan got the start for Oswego. he pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks, striking out four. Levine_BattingOSWEGO, N.Y.  – The boys went to work Tuesday in a battle against St. John Fisher. Ultimately the Lakers were more hungry for the win and came out on top. They had the momentum early on and were able to maintain this momentum  throughout the game. The Lakers went up by four runs after sophomore Jacob Levine hit one out of the park resulting in a three run homer. Levine had himself a day with a homer and four RBI’s. St. John Fisher would score six unanswered runs in two innings, ultimately taking a one run lead going into the bottom of the seventh. The Lakers were not going to let off the gas however as they answered right back with two runs after Lukas Olsson scored a two run homer to give the Lakers the momentum. Another three runs sealed the deal for the Lakers as they walked out with an 10-8 victory. The Lakers go on the road Friday to take on Fredonia in their final regular season series. Oswego State women’s lacrosse falls in opening round of SUNYAC tournament

ONEONTA, N.Y. — On Tuesday, the Oswego State women’s lacrosse team traveled to Oneonta to take on the Red Dragons in the first round of the SUNYAC tournament. In the back-and-forth contest which saw six Lakers total at least two points, Oswego would end up falling to the home team 14-12.

To open up the first five minutes of play, Oneonta came out firring quickly, putting up three consecutive goals. Though, it was at the 7:15 mark of the quarter when Julia Quirk scored her first of many goals on the day on a player-up opportunity. Four minutes later Isabella Lembo would continue the Lakers scoring run, finding the back of the net off a picture-perfect pass from Sela Wiley. In the final two minutes of the opening frame, both teams put in another goal. For Oswego, it was Logan Castiglione who — like many games this season — showed her playmaking prowess, setting up Shae McConnell to bring the score to 4-3. Within a minute of the second quarter, Oneonta answered back to the late goal scored by the Lakers and brought their lead to 5-3. Then once more at the 12:56 mark, the Red Dragons got another one passed Sarah Kamide to take a three-goal lead. From here on, the momentum started to shift towards the Lakers. Madison Davis found a Quirk cutting through the lane for a goal to make the score 7-5 with &:34 remaining in the half. Then much like the first quarter, Oswego got another late goal before the closing buzzer. With 40 seconds remaining, Wiley added her second assist of the game on a pass to McConnell, cutting the deficit to just one goal at the break.

It was key for Oswego to carry that momentum into the third quarter and that’s exactly what they did. Just 16 seconds into the second half, Wiley added another assist, finding an open Castiglione to tie the game at seven. However, the Red Dragons were not going to give up that easy. Oneonta kicked it up a notch, scoring the game’s next three goals spanning from 14:13-11:47. This put the Red Dragons up 10-7. At the 11:02 mark, Castiglione got her third point of the afternoon as she set up Davis for her first goal. Following this, Oneonta started to pull away little by little. At the 9:03 mark, the home team took a 12-8 lead after scoring two straight goals. Oswego was able to chip away at this lead before the end of the quarter as Quirk put in another goal with 1:45 remaining. This brought the contest back to a three-goal difference heading into the final quarter. Less than two minutes into the fourth, Oneonta scored once more to take a 13-9 lead. Shortly after, Quirk scored again following a caused turnover by Lembo. Although, the Red Dragons fired back at 9:15 to regain their four-goal lead. Oswego scored the final two goals of the game, but those final two goals of the game would end up being the final two goals of the season for the Lakers. Oswego wasn’t able to find the back of the net over the final three minutes and Oneonta would go on to win 14-12.

Statistically, the game was relatively even. Oswego barely trailed the Red Dragons in total shots (29-28), but did have two more turnovers in the game (19-17). Where things weren’t even, though, came in the ground ball department where Oneonta was extremely efficient (23-14). The Lakers had a total of six players rack up at least two points including Julia Quirk (6g), Sela Wiley (5a), Madison Davis (2g, 2a), Logan Castiglione (1g, 2a), Shae McConnell (2g), and Isabella Lembo (1g, 1a). Sarah Kamide also brought in 10 saves throughout the contest.

Although it isn’t the outcome the team or Coach Howard wanted, this season was a success for the Lakers. This season marked the first time Oswego made the playoffs since 2019, over three years ago. This was also the first time Oswego had a winning record in the SUNYAC conference (5-4) since that very season. In the 2021 season, one of the Lakers biggest problems was that they were too reliant on Sela Wiley to generate offense and score goals. However, Oswego completely flipped the switch and were much more efficient in 2022. The Lakers saw five players total more than 20 goals this season as opposed to last year where they only had one. This — in part — was due to the meteoric rise of Julia Quirk, who put up 35 goals this season which was 30 more than she had in 2021. Oswego was also much better at setting teammates up for success this year. Logan Castiglione once again led the team in assists, this time with 34 which was more than double the amount she had last season (15). Finally, Oswego saw great production from freshman goalkeeper Sarah Kamide. In her first year with the team, Kamide totaled 152 saves and more impressively, play every second of every game this year, solidifying herself as the Ironwoman the Lakers will need moving forward.

Through a hard fought season, Oswego was able to put together a much improved 2022 campaign. Although the outcome could have been more favorable, the team put on some mightily impressive performances. With only one senior graduating this year, the Oswego State women’s lacrosse team looks to be intact for the foreseeable future. And with the talent this team possesses currently, the future is brighter than ever for the Lakers.

Oswego State softball wraps up 2022 season

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team finished their 2022 regular season this past weekend with 2 conference doubleheaders as SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo traveled to SUNY Oswego’s campus. The Lakers were unable to find the win column this weekend and finished the campaign with an overall record of 9-26 and 4-14 in SUNYAC play. Oswego State was eliminated from post season contention as the Lakers finished 9th in the conference standings, just above SUNY Potsdam.

On Friday, the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport traveled into Oswego, New York to take on the Lakers in a doubleheader. Game 1 finished with a 9-4 score in favor of SUNY Brockport after the Golden Eagles score first in the top of the 3rd. Oswego State would answer with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning but the Golden Eagles ran away with the contest the rest of the way. In Game 2, Oswego State struck first in the bottom of the opening inning with 1 run. The teams would trade runs in the 2nd inning before the Lakers took a commanding lead in the 4th inning. The Golden Eagles would have a monster 5th inning with 6 runs scored to take the lead and the group never looked back from there.

The following day, the Lakers would honor their seniors in a doubleheader against the top team in the SUNYAC, the Knights from SUNY Geneseo. The Lakers were swept by the Knights as SUNY Geneseo won a close Game 1 by a score of 8-7. Oswego State would take a commanding 7-1 lead early in the contest before SUNY Geneseo reeled back in the Lakers. The contest would go to extra innings as the Knights found the winning run in the top of the 9th inning.

It would be another 1 run game in the second stretch of the doubleheader. Oswego State unfortunately were on the wrong of the score line as the Knights came away with a 6-5 win in the final game of the regular season. SUNY Geneseo would snag 4 runs over the course of a few innings to take an early lead. Oswego State would tally 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game. In the final inning, SUNY Geneseo would score 2 more runs while the Lakers could only manage to find 1 run and would fall in their last contest of the 2022 campaign.

Laker Zoe Mennig would lead the Oswego State squad at the plate for the 2nd season in a row. The senior catcher finished with a .442 batting average and 42 hits over the course of 95 at bats. Fionna Higgins followed up Mennig with a .300 batting average. Higgins was also the top pitcher in the bullpen this season with the lowest ERA which was 4.72 at the end of the season. The junior finished with a 6-8 record at the end of the season. The Oswego State softball team will return next season in the spring for the 2023 season.

Oswego State men’s lacrosse falls to Brockport in heart-breaking season finale

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team dropped their last game of the regular season on Friday, falling to the Brockport Golden Eagles 13-12. In the Friday night contest which saw the Oswego faithful pack the bleachers of Laker Turf Stadium, Brockport would go on to defeat the home team in heartbreaking fashion — scoring the game-winning goal with 34 seconds remaining in regulation.

Oswego was in a “win-and-you’re-in” scenario in regards to making the SUNYAC playoffs. Knowing this, the Lakers opened up the scoring early with Weston Gray getting his first goal of the game. Though, from there, Brockport went on to score five consecutive goals to make it a 5-1 ballgame at the end of the first quarter. To begin the second quarter, Ryan Eccles set up Gray with a nice feed which allowed him to get his second goal of the evening. Shortly after, Eccles got a goal for himself to cut the Golden Eagles lead to two. Then in a man-up opportunity, Brockport shot one past Aiden Kenyon to stretch their lead back to three goals. This is when the momentum started to shift in the Lakers favor. Spanning from 1:37 in the second quarter to 9:37 in the third, Oswego scored five unanswered goals to take a 8-6 lead. Included in these goals were Gavin Elston from Eccles, Ryan Dumont from Gray, Corey O’Connor from Elston, Max Broadman from Eccles, and Elston from Eccles.

From there, Brockport went on to score the next three goals of the game, capitalizing on several Laker turnovers and a man-up opportunity. Right before the third quarter came to a close, Owen Spearing got loose and shot a zinger past the Brockport goalie for his first goal of the year. This goal made the large Oswego crowd erupt with energy, which carried on throughout the fourth quarter. Both teams went back-and-forth throughout the final fifteen minutes of play. Elston scored once more for his 29th goal of the season, but this was followed up with a Brockport goal just 30 seconds later. At the 8:58 mark, Elston was left wide open and hit paydirt again, making it a 11-10 game in favor of the Lakers. A minute later, Cameron Tallman put another one in for Oswego to give them a two-point lead. The Golden Eagles weren’t going to go away that easy, though. Brockport capitalized on a late defensive rotation and shot one past Kenyon, bringing the deficit to one. Then at the 3:15 mark, Brockport forced a Laker turnover and found the back of the net to tie the game. Over the final three minutes of play, both teams played with a major sense of urgency and it looked like neither team would budge. However, after a Brockport timeout with 42 seconds left, Rocco Santillo beat his man with a quick face dodge and scored the Golden Eagles’ 13th goal of the night. Though, the drama and anticipation wouldn’t end there. After Oswego won the ensuing faceoff, Brockport was called for a cross check which gave the Lakers a much needed man-up opportunity. With 24 seconds left on the clock, Coach Eccles called a timeout and drew up his best play. Coming out of the timeout, Oswego wasn’t able to find a clean look, but somehow found a man right in front of the crease. However, the shot attempt was stuffed at the goal line and as the balled rolled towards the sideline, the clock ran out along with Oswego’s dwindling playoff hopes. Brockport wins 13-12.

On the night in which Oswego celebrated two seniors – Weston Gray and Tyler Scordo – the Lakers were unable to come away with a victory despite having less turnovers (21-25). With this loss, Oswego dropped to 8-6 (3-4 in conference) on the season and will just miss out on the SUNYAC playoffs as they were jumped by SUNY Oneonta. Although Oswego has a better overall record than the Red Dragons, they both finished with the same conference record, with Oneonta holding the head-to-head tie-breaker over the Lakers. As it stands, the #4 seed Oneonta Red Dragons will travel to take on the #1 seed Cortland Red Dragons on May 4. The first round will also see the #3 seed Brockport Golden Eagles face the #2 seed Geneseo Knights.

Despite the abrupt end to the 2022 season, Oswego was much improved this year, finishing with their best record since 2019 and their highest goal output in program history. As the spring season comes to a close, Oswego fans can rest assured knowing the men’s lacrosse program has a bright future ahead.

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Pure domination from start to finish. That’s what I have to say about this contest. The Lakers hosted Plattsburgh Saturday in a win or go home matchup for both teams. The Lakers clearly proved that they wanted it more, winning in dominant fashion. Besides the opening face off, this game was never close. The Lakers got on the board in the opening minutes of the contest and were relentless the rest of the game. Up by five at the end of the first, this game was going just as planned for the lakers. At the end of the second Plattsburgh was down ten and the running clock was in full effect. The game was already over by halftime. Plattsburgh was able to score some pity points in the second half but the Lakers continued to dominate. The Final score was 17-6. An absolute massacre. Senior Isabella Lembo had an incredible performance in her last regular season game as a Laker. She scored a whopping seven goals in the contest. Sophomore Jullia Quirk also had an impressive performance with three goals. Logan Castiglione let all her teammates eat as she had two goals compared to her eight assists. The Lakers head to the first round of the SUNYAC championship this Tuesday. They take on SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m on the road.

Oswego State women’s lacrosse takes setback against SUNY Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team headed on the road Wednesday to take on the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles in a SUNYAC matchup. The Lakers would fall 15-5 to the Golden Eagles to drop to 4-4 in the conference. With the win, SUNY Brockport clinches a berth to the post season with a SUNYAC record of 6-2 over the course of the 2022 campaign. Oswego State is now 5-10 in the 2022 season overall.

SUNY Brockport started off the contest with four straight goals before the Lakers found the back of the net in the 2nd quarter. Oswego State was held off the scoresheet in the 1st stanza but Sela WIley added to her season goal total and put the Lakers on the board. Madison Davis would snag the assist on the shot and the Lakers place ketchup against the Golden Eagles. However, SUNY Brockport would put 6 more goals in before the Lakers found twine once again. Wiley netted her second in the 3rd quarter to try and narrow the margin. The captain would complete the hattrick at the end of the quarter as Julia Quirk got credit for the assist. Quirk would add another goal in the final stanza and Shae McConnell put one in with 7 minutes remaining in regulation for her 29 goal of the season. Netminder Sarah Kamide made 7 saves over the course of the game and allowed 16 goals. The Lakers were out shot 32 to 19 in the contest.

Oswego State now turns their attention to Plattsburgh State this Saturday for Senior Day at Laker Turf Stadium. Oswego State sits in the final playoff spot in the SUNYAC playoffs and Plattsburgh State trails them with a conference record of 3-5. For the Lakers, it is simple, win and you are in. The Cardinals will look to steal a win on the road to force a tiebreaker at the end of the regular season. The final game of the regular season can be seen live on WTOP 10 as the Lakers face off against the Cardinals at 12:00 p.m. this Saturday on the banks of Lake Ontario.
