Oswego State Baseball Sweeps Fredonia in SUNYAC Doubleheader
FREDONIA, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball extended their win streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep at Fredonia on Tuesday, April 20th by scores of 8-5 and 10-5. With the two wins, Oswego improves to 11-1 on the season, and 7-1 in SUNYAC play which ties the Lakers for first place in the SUNYAC West with Brockport. Fredonia would stay in third with a 0-10 conference record.
Home runs powered the Laker offense in game one, with five of the eight runs scored by the Lakers coming courtesy of the long ball. Paul Tammaro and Myles Felton would both pick up their first home runs of the season, as they led the Lakers with two hits apiece in game one. Tammaro hit a two run homer in the 4th inning to pick up his 2nd and 3rd RBIs of the day, and Felton would make it back to back, following it up with a solo shot of his own to put the Lakers ahead 6-0 after four innings. Jai Sharma gave up four hits in five innings of work in similar fashion to his first start, but Sharma would not allow a run in this outing and also struck out eight. Fredonia put up five runs in the bottom of the 7th to make it 6-5 with the Lakers in the lead, but Dylan Frawley picked up some insurance runs with a two run home run in the top of the 8th to put the game away, and help give the Lakers a 8-5 win.
Oswego came out hot in game one putting up five runs in the top of the 1st inning. Ryan Weiss picked up an RBI single, and Weiss would touch the plate as well on a Julian Drew grand slam that put the Lakers ahead 5-0 before Fredonia got their first at bats of game two. Tammaro picked up an RBI single in the 4th as a part of his 3-3 game two. Oswego led 10-1 after five innings, but Fredonia made another comeback in the form of a five run 7th inning, but the nine run deficit was too much as the Lakers took game two 10-5.
Oswego baseball is back in action Thursday, April 22nd against University of Rochester for a non conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in Rochester. This is the first non-conference opponent Oswego will face since Clarkson on April 14th. Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Prepares for Brockport Following Win Versus Buffalo State
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team won their fourth game of the season on Monday, defeating the Buffalo State Bengals 14-4. This was the Lakers second win of the season versus the Bengals as the won their last matchup 14-6 on April 10th. The Lakers sweep the Bengals to get two wins this season in the SUNYAC West Division.
Oswego snapped a 3-game losing streak with Monday’s victory, something they needed to accomplish in order to keep pace in the West division. It was a back-and-forth game midway through the 1st half. The Lakers lead 3-0 in the opening 5 minutes following goals from Shae McConnell, Erin Lehmann, and leading scorer, Sela WIley. The Bengals then retaliated with 3 goals of their own, tying the game with 12:36 left in the 1st half. However, Buffalo State would never hold a lead in the entire game as they were outscored by Oswego 11-1 at the end of regulation. Wiley had yet another dominant performance on Monday. The sophomore scored 5 goals, bringing her season total to 27, and added an assist on top of that. McConnell also had a hat-trick while Isabella Lembo fell just short, totaling 2 goals and 1 assist. Four other Lakers scored a single goal, including Logan Castiglione, Julia Quirk, Erin Lehmann, and Katie Fierro. Fierro netted her first collegiate goal in the victory.
Oswego improved to 3-2 in SUNYAC play and will look towards their highly anticipated matchup vs SUNY Brockport. The Lakers will look to avenge their blowout loss to the Golden Eagles just a few days ago on April 17th. Oswego lost 22-9 but will have to have a short term memory heading into Wednesday’s matchup. Brockport is on a 7-game winning streak, backed by the outstanding play of leading scorer, Heather Conklin. Conklin has scored a whopping 39 goals this season and had 6 against Oswego in their previous game. The Golden Eagles also have two other players with more than 20 goals, including Cassidy Burnash (24), and Allison Jennings (21). The Lakers will have to play better defensively in order to keep up with Brockport’s high-powered offense. Oswego currently sits in 3rd place in the West division and needs a victory to keep pace with SUNY Geneseo (4-1). Brockport (6-1) has already clinched a playoff berth and will look to continue their great 2021 season on Wednesday. Face off is set for 4:00 PM at Brockport for this SUNYAC West matchup.
Oswego State Baseball Travels to Fredonia for SUNYAC Doubleheader
OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball returns after a brief COVID pause which resulted in the cancellation of the home doubleheader on Sunday, April 18th against Trinity College. Oswego returns Tuesday, April 20th for a 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Fredonia, for a SUNYAC West matchup. Oswego comes into Tuesday’s games with a 9-1 record (5-1 SUNYAC) and the Lakers are in second place out of the three SUNYAC West teams. The Lakers are also on an 8-game win streak heading into the conference doubleheader. Fredonia currently sits in last place in the SUNYAC West, with a record of 1-8 (0-8 SUNYAC).
The Lakers and the Blue Devils have met in two games this season, a doubleheader in Oswego on April 10th. Oswego dominated both of those games by scores of 17-3 and 15-6. Kyle Lauria was 5-7 that day, to go with 7 RBIs, a triple, home run, and 3 runs, which helped him win SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week. Ryan Enos hit well against Fredonia as well, going 6-8 with 2 doubles, 7 RBIs, and 6 runs.
On the season, the Oswego offense has been nothing short of amazing as they are averaging 11.6 runs per game. Enos leads the Lakers in average and RBIs with a .500 average paired with 20 RBIs. Lauria is hitting .432 with 17 RBIs, a triple and a home run on the year. Oswego features two more hitters hitting .400 or above, in Paul Tammaro at .432 and Ryan Weiss who is hitting exactly .400. Look for the Laker bats to put up a lump sum of runs on Tuesday in both games.
Fredonia’s leading hitter is Ryan Hann who is leading the Blue Devils in batting average at .385, and RBIs with 8. Tyler Phillips was Fredonia’s best hitter against the Lakers back on April 10th, Phillips was 3-7 with 2 runs against the Lakers, as the Oswego pitching staff shut down the Fredonia bats in both games.
Oswego baseball takes the field Tuesday, April 20th at Fredonia, with games scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. This is a key matchup as the Lakers chase Brockport in the SUNYAC West standings. Logan Castiglione and the Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Team
OSWEGO, N.Y. — Following their unprecedented 2020 season, the Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team has started their 2021 season off strong, securing victories against Morrisville State, Buffalo State, and SUNY Fredonia. The Lakers have won decisively in each of their victories thus far, lead by the outstanding play and leadership of junior midfielder, Logan Castiglione.
Castiglione is playing in her first lacrosse season since her senior year of high school and it doesn’t seem like she’s missed a beat. Through six games she’s totaled 11 goals and 11 assists, including a 5-goal performance vs. Morrisville State in her first game in over 3 years. Being that Logan is one of the more experienced athletes on the team, she believes it’s important for her to take on a leadership role this season. She states, “I really just try to keep myself composed. Since I am older, I try to be a leader more on the field.”
The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team is 3-3 so far this season and although they’re currently on a 3-game losing streak, Coach Britt Howard believes this team has what it takes to make a postseason run. Howard has been coaching Women’s Lacrosse at Oswego since 2016 and she sees a lot of potential from this year’s team, especially from Logan Castiglione.
Coach said, “Logan just started joining out program this year and she really had a great start for her first game with us, so that was huge for her.”
Though the Lakers are in good position to qualify for SUNYACs, they must continue to build on their team chemistry in order to ensure a successful season, something Castiglione has emphasized to her team. She states, “Throughout the first couple weeks that I’ve been playing, we’ve been talking about teamwork, communication, and how much team chemistry is important on and off the field.”
Castiglione and the Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team have the opportunity to improve to 4-3 as they take on Buffalo State on April 18th.
Oswego State Softball Splits Doubleheader with Fredonia
OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Softball split a doubleheader at home against Fredonia on Sunday, April 18th with a 6-3 loss in game one and bouncing back in a 4-3 win in game two. Oswego and Fredonia are tied for second place in SUNYAC West, each team holding a 4-4 SUNYAC record at the end of Sunday.
Oswego saw their three game win streak get snapped in game one of the doubleheader, as the Lakers offense put up three runs on five hits. Oswego drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning when Madelana Wrubel and Leah Czerwinski would score on an error by Fredonia’s right fielder, on a ball hit by Madison Hoeflich. Fredonia answered back in the top of the fourth with a four run inning, including a three run home run, all four runs being the only earned runs Fiona Higgins would allow in her seven innings of work. Oswego was trailing 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, before Zoe Mennig would hit her third home run of the year, a solo shot to make it a one run deficit for the Lakers. Fredonia would put up two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to take game one by a score of 6-3.
Mennig got the Lakers offense going in the first frame of game one on an RBI single that would score Wrubel. Oswego would score three more unanswered runs from innings two through five, Leah Czerwinski and Brianna LoMonaco would score courtesy of Fredonia errors, and Ellie Mahoney scored on a sacrifice fly from the bat of Tai Smith. Oswego led 4-0 going into the seventh inning, but the Blue Devils would put up three runs on Hoeflich who had been tremendous with six shutout innings prior to the final frame. Higgins would inherit a no out, runners on first and second situation with a one run lead in the seventh inning. After a ground out and a walk, Higgins found herself in a one out, bases loaded situation. Higgins got the batter to hit a ground ball to Wrubel at second base, who threw home for the force out to Mennig, who threw on to Taylor DuBois at first base to secure the 4-3 win.
Oswego and Fredonia are tied for second in the SUNYAC West at 4-4, the Lakers next play at Geneseo on Wednesday, April 21st at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Geneseo currently holds sole possession of first place in SUNYAC West with a 4-2 record including a 2-0 record against Oswego this season. Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Prepares for Rematch Against Buffalo State
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team is looking to end their 3-game losing streak as they take on the Buffalo State Bengals on Monday, April 19th. This will be the Lakers second game against Buffalo State this season, with their previous matchup being a 14-6 victory on April 10th. Oswego has four games left in the regular season and the push for the playoffs has begun across the women’s lacrosse west division.
The outcome of Monday’s contest will have a pivotal impact on Oswego’s postseason chances. After a 13-point loss to SUNY Brockport on April 17th, the Lakers dropped to 3-3 on the season and 2-2 in SUNYAC games. With only three games left in the season following their matchup against Buffalo State, it’s important for Oswego to win in order to stay within reach of one of the playoff spots in the west division. Buffalo State is currently on a 6-game losing streak, including a 23-2 loss vs the Brockport Golden Eagles on April 16th. The Bengals will be lead by senior midfielder and leading scorer, Samantha Burlow, who has 10 goals on the season. Sophomore goalkeeper, Janae Nelson, has totaled 65 saves on the season and will anchor the Buffalo State defense all game. Though, she’ll be facing a high-powered Laker offense, lead by Sela Wiley, who’s scored 22 goals this season. Look for freshman midfielder, Shae McConnell, to have a big role in this game as she scored 4 goals in their previous game against Buffalo State. Both teams are desperate for a late season win, so expect a competitive game on Monday. Oswego is 17-10 against Buffalo State all-time and will look to improve their record to 2-0 versus the Bengals in 2021. Oswego State Softball Takes On Fredonia
OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Softball hosts Fredonia for a SUNYAC West doubleheader on Sunday, April 18th at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at Laker Softball Field. The Lakers have the longest current active win streak in SUNYAC softball, at three straight wins, Oswego looks to extend their win streak against the Blue Devils in this critical matchup.
The Lakers offense put up 17 runs in the doubleheader at Buffalo State this past Wednesday, the most runs they have tallied in a doubleheader so far this season. Oswego hit five home runs Wednesday, after hitting none in the first six games of the season, two apiece from Zoe Mennig and Samantha Morgan, and one off the bat of Fiona Higgins. Mennig leads the team with a .577 batting average, along with a team high 10 RBIs, and the only triple the Lakers have on the season. Madelana Wrubel is second on the team in batting average with a .400, as well as a team high four doubles. Oswego has thrown just three pitchers over the first eight games, all are sophomores, and Madison Hoeflich is emerging as the ace of the trio with a 2.43 ERA over 23 innings, and two complete games.
Fredonia comes in tied with Oswego for second place in the SUNYAC at 3-3, but the Blue Devils have a 3-7 overall record compared to Oswego’s 4-4 overall record. Nicole Kumro leads Fredonia with 5 RBIs, Katie Yudin leads with a .478 batting average, and both girls have the only Fredonia home runs of the season. All four Fredonia pitchers who have thrown more than two innings have an ERA over four, as opposing teams average 9.6 runs per game against SUNY Fredonia.
Oswego softball takes the field Sunday, April 18th at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. against Fredonia, as the Laker bats will look to stay hot against the struggling Fredonia pitching. WTOP 10 will be at the field for all the action for Oswego State fans.
Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Falls to SUNY Brockport
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team lost their third straight game on Saturday, falling to the Brockport Golden Eagles 22-9. This loss drops the Lakers to 3-3 on the season and 2-2 in SUNYAC play. However, Oswego remains in 3rd place in the West division, ahead of SUNY Fredonia (1-4) and Buffalo State (0-5). With four conference games left before the end of the regular season, the Lakers are still in the hunt for a SUNYAC Championship spot.
The Lakers were competitive early on, leading the Golden Eagles 2-1 after quick goals from Logan Castiglione and Kamryn Sherman. But that would be the only lead Oswego would have all game as Brockport went on a 7-goal run midway through the first half and never looked back. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Lakers 36 to 22, with 26 shots being on goal. What really hurt the Lakers chances in the Saturday’s matchup were their defensive clears. Oswego had only 6 successful clears and continued to give Brockport second chance shots on goal. Seven Lakers scored in the matchup, including Isabella Lembo (2), Kamryn Sherman (2), Sela Wiley (1), and Shae McConnell (1). Logan Castiglione also added 1 goal and 2 assists. As for Brockport, they were lead by leading scorer, Heather Conklin, who totaled 6 goals and 2 assists. After starting the season 3-0, Oswego will now enter Monday’s game versus Buffalo State looking to end a 3-game losing streak. The Lakers previously defeated the Bengals 14-6 on April 10th. The women’s lacrosse team will need a win to stay alive in the playoff race. The opening face off is set for 4:00 PM at Laker Turf Stadium. WTOP 10 will be at the field broadcasting all the action.
Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Team Looks to End Losing Streak
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team will look to avenge their 18-4 loss to Clarkson University as they battle SUNY Brockport on Saturday, April 17th. The race for the SUNYAC Championships is currently a three way battle in the west division with Brockport, Geneseo, and Oswego all being contenders for the two spots available for the postseason. Oswego has not seen the 5-1 Brockport squad yet this season, and the Lakers dropped their first game to Geneseo earlier this week. This conference matchup is important for Britt Howard and the rest of the Lakers if the group wants to remain in the hunt and make it into another post season, a streak that started back in the 2016 season. Oswego enters this matchup on two-game slide while the Golden Eagles ride a 6-game win streak which includes a 23-2 victory vs Buffalo State on April 16th.
The Lakers suffered their worst offensive performance of the season against Clarkson. They shot the ball just 16 times versus the Golden Knights, their lowest output of 2021. Although Oswego wasn’t able to score much, sophomore midfielder, Sela Wiley, continued her outstanding season, scoring 3-out-of 4 Lakers goals in the loss. Junior goalkeeper, Delaney Kendrick, will need to have a great defensive performance to suppress Brockport’s high-powered offense on Saturday. The Golden Eagles are averaging 16 points a game in 2021 and have scored 58 goals in their past three games. Four players have totaled at least 25 points for Brockport so far this season, including Cassidy Burnash (20 goals, 5 assists), Allison Jennings (18 goals, 9 assists), Natalie Strough (13 goals, 25 assists), and leading scorer Heather Conklin (33 goals, 7 assists). With only five games remaining in Oswego’s schedule, Saturday’s contest will have a pivotal impact not only on the Lakers postseason chances, but the entire SUNYAC west division standings.
