OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Men’s Lacrosse team lost their second game of the 2021 season on Friday, falling to the Cortland Red Dragons 16-7. The Cortland winning streak vs Oswego continues as the Red Dragons improve to 37-0 all time vs the Lakers. Oswego has yet to win a game this season after losing to Brockport to start the 2021 campaign.
Cortland came out firing early on, scoring the game’s first 3 goals before Weston Gray put the Lakers on the board to end the 1st quarter. Both teams scored 2 goals apiece in the 2nd quarter with the Red Dragons leading 5-3 at halftime. However Cortland would go on and blow things open in the second half. They outscored Oswego 11-4, including a 7-goal run to end the 3rd quarter. Liam Dollard and Weston Gray lead the way for the Lakers, each scoring 2 goals in the contest. Freshman midfielder, Lucas Cioch, also added 2 assists in the loss. Oswego now drops to 0-2 on the season following their two SUNYAC losses, and currently sit in 4th place in the West division. They’ll look to bounce back vs Nazareth College on Tuesday, April 13th at 4 p.m. in the Lakers first non-conference game of the season. WTOP 10 will continue to deliver content on the Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse team as the group battles to head to the SUNYAC Championship.

Oswego State women’s hockey narrowly edges past William Smith 1-0
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team narrowly defeated the William Smith Herons on Tuesday 1-0. With this victory, the Lakers improve to 5-2-1 this season and enter their Thanksgiving break on a two-game win streak.
Oswego and William Smith played and extremely physical game from buzzer-to-buzzer. Early on, Oswego found themselves in penalty trouble but were able to efficiently kill the clock. For much of the first period, the Lakers offensive zone pressure smothered the Herons, allowing only three shots in the opening 20 minutes. As the game started to heat up, Oswego found themselves in a 5-on-4 situation in the second period, but were unable to capitalize on the powerplay. However five minutes into the third period, junior forward Ariella Haas scored the game’s lone goal off assists from both Chyne Kennedy and Emily Gustafson.
Oswego continued their dominance in the faceoff circle again on Tuesday, winning 29-17. Haas les the Lakers in faceoff wins (10-5), followed by Morgan Shines (8-4) and Sara Cruise (6-2). Starting goalkeeper Joanna Hiebert also continued her hot streak in this matchup, recording her second consecutive shutout and third of the season.
The Lakers are now 5-2-1 on the season and sit third place in the NEWHL standings. Following Thanksgiving break, Oswego will have a prime opportunity to move up in the standings as they travel to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons, who sit second in the NEWHL. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3.

Pickett Seals Lakers 2022 Max Ziel Tournament Win
OSWEGO, NY – Women’s Basketball continues to impress early on in the 2022-23 season as they won the 2022 Max Ziel Tournament and stay undefeated at 3-0. The Lakers got the tournament started by taking down the Keystone College Giants 86-84 in OT.The first quarter was competitive as there were eight lead changes in the quarter. The Lakers went 3-8 from the field goal line in the first quarter and would outscore the Giants 19-11 in rebounds. The second quarter saw three more lead changes as both teams would score 17 points in the quarter as the score was tied at 35 going into the half. In the third quarter, there were eight more lead changes as the game continued to be a back-and-forth battle between the Lakers and the Giants.
The Lakers would lead 62-28 going into the fourth quarter but Keystone began to pull away in the fourth. Karleigh Leo helped rally the Lakers back as she had ten points in the final four minutes of the fourth to bring the game to overtime at 77. In overtime, both teams went back-and-forth until Diamond Pickett grabbed an offensive rebound and scored with 1.8 seconds left in overtime. A last-second three-point attempt by Keystone’s Riley Berry failed as the Lakers won 86-84 in OT. Leo would lead the Lakers on the day with 23 points while Pickett had scored 14 points. Despite the losing effort, Berry had 33 points in the game with a total of 58 throughout the whole entire tournament including going 13-25 from the three-point line. She was able to earn herself an All-Tournament Player award for her team for the tournament.
In the second game, the Lakers rode the momentum they had against Keystone into their game against the Suny Poly Wildcats winning 65-64. The Wildcats came off a day one win in the tournament against Morrisville defeating them 63-55.
The Lakers started off the game with back-to-back three-pointers from Karleigh Leo and Logan Castiglione to put the Lakers up 6-2 early in the first quarter. The Wildcats were able to maintain a three-point lead going into the second quarter but the Lakers would go on a 13-point run to lead 27-17. Poly would rally back though and would cut the deficit to four. The Lakers would lead 33-29 going into halftime.
Karleigh Leo would go off in the third quarter with four three-pointers as the Wildcats had no answers for her. The Lakers would begin to pull away from the Wildcats 59-48 at the end of the third. The Wildcats would rally back in the fourth despite both teams struggling offensively. Diamond Pickett proved to be the difference maker once again as she scored the game-winning basket with nine seconds remaining. Logan Castiglione would win the All-Tournament Player award for Oswego as she had 19 points to go along with 11 field goals made in both games. Karleigh Leo would win the MVP for the tournament after her incredible performance in both games where she recorded 40 points along with going 15-37 from the field-goal line.
The Lakers will stay home to face Wells College on Wednesday, November 16th at the Max Ziel Gymnasium at 7 PM. The Lakers will look to stay undefeated this season as they look for their first four 4-0 start since the 2010-11 season. Additionally, they will be looking for their first four-game win streak since the 2012-13 season.

Field hockey wins on road with big fourth quarter
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Lakers travelled to Rochester to take on the Nazareth Golden Flyers on Tuesday night in a Oswego 3-1 win. Oswego’s offense would start out swinging in the first quarter with four shots attempted and three shots on goal from Simzer, Darcy and Delaney but none would make it to the back of the goal. The Lakers defense was in control in the first quarter by mostly keeping the ball in midfield which only allowed Nazareth to attempt one shot. Oswego would get their second penalty corner of the evening, just over three minutes into the second quarter (18:06) but the Laker’s were unable to capitalize as the defense by Nazareth didn’t allow Oswego to attempt a shot. Just over five minutes into the second, Nazareth would finally have their first shot on goal but Oswego goalkeeper Erica Scheblein would kick the ball out of bounds and record her first save of the night. The last 8 minutes of the quarter the Lakers were able to get some shots on goal with two coming from Kacie Simzer and one coming from Bryleigh Beauchat. Altogether Oswego would finish the first half with seven shots, four landing on goal with a halftime score of 0-0
At the start of the second half the Golden Flyers decided to make a change with their goalie and Oswego attacked. Oswego would record seven shots in the third quarter with none getting past the fresh new goalie. But all that changed in the fourth quarter when 46 minutes in the scoreless streak broke from a goal from sophomore Kate McNally assisted by Molly Darcy(46:19). The Lakers scored again 5 minutes later(51:37) off of a penalty goal from Kaitlyn Mastracco, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead. 15 seconds later Nazareth answered back with a goal from Hannah James(51:52) to bring the Oswego lead to only one. But Nazareth defense couldn’t stop the Lakers as Kacie Simzer would grab another goal for Oswego(55:06) assisted by Taylin Bauer to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead. Nazareth would have chances at the end to score, but the Laker’s defense held up and didn’t allow any more goals for Nazareth to hold on to the win. Oswego out shot Nazareth by a 19-9 margin and Erica Scheblein continues her great season with five saves on the night.
Oswego is now 7-6 on the season. The Lakers will now return home on Saturday for senior day in a conference matchup against the Brockport Golden Eagles.
