New York State Plastic Bag Law In Effect
New York State passed a law banning plastic bags on March 1st of this year. However, the state will not begin implementing fines on retailers until at least April 1st. Most stores are switching to paper bags, but these tend to come at a charge because they are more expensive than the previously used single-use plastic bags.
Bosco’s manager. Theresa Himes, says the local grocery store has also began selling reusable bags to customers “We discontinued the plastic ones. We’re using paper bags for some people that don’t have the reusable or don’t want to purchase them.”
Customers are encouraged to bring their own bags when shopping, to not only reduce waste but money, as well. If anyone is in need of any reusable bags, they can stop by City Hall to pick some up for free.

Madrigal Earns Shutout Against Buffalo State
In their first ever game as a member of the NEWHL, the Oswego State women’s ice hockey team defeated Buffalo State 3-0 on Saturday. With the victory, the Lakers move to 2-1 overall with a 1-0 conference record while the Bengals drop to 1-4 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
Although Oswego State was outshot in the contest, the Lakers remained in control mainly because of the amount of faceoffs won and their timely goals. In the first period, Oswego State’s Eryn Stewart opened the scoring with her second goal of the season on an assist from senior Olivia Ellis. After a Victoria Rankin goal in the second and an injury to Buffalo State’s starting goalie Justine Silva, Ellis capped off the Lakers’ scoring to seal the game.
Before exiting the game, Justine Silva made 20 saves for the Bengals while also allowing two goals. Mariah Madrigal played all 60 minutes of the game in goal for the Lakers and tied her season-high with 33 saves. The shutout marks her second clean sheet of the season.
Oswego will look to sweep the weekend series against Buffalo State at home on Sunday at 3:00 pm.

Fake ID’s Seized Following joint effort to Combat Underage Drinking
This past weekend, members of the Police Department along with investigators from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, SUNY Oswego police officers and local business owners; worked together to try and combat underage drinking and the use of fake ID’s.
Over 24 people were issued citations for attempting to use fake identification on Friday night. All fake ID’s were confiscated by DMV investigators.
The operation was conducted at three bars on West Bridge Street; Alley Cat’s on 23 W. Bridge Street, The Raven on 39 W. Bridge Street and The Sting on 49 W. Bridge Street.
This initiative is part of Governor Cuomo’s “No Excuses” Campaign which has conducted sweeps called “Operation Prevent” across the state to prevent underage drinking in New York State and keep New York Roadway’s safe.
Mayor Billy Barlow has been outspoken about the efforts made to prevent underage drinking, saying “The collaborative effort between local law enforcement, DMV investigators, local bar owners, SUNY Oswego and the city of Oswego, emphasizes the importance of these types of sweeps in our community.”
