ONEONTA, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team fell to SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons this past Saturday by a score of 12-6. The Lakers drop to 3-2 in the SUNYAC conference
as the group looks ahead to their final two games of the 2022 regular season. Oswego State was held to only 1 goal during the second half while the Red Dragons pulled ahead to steal a game in the playoff race. Gavin Elston scored three goals over the course of the contest and netminder Aiden Kenyon made 20 saves with a .625 save percentage.
The Red Dragons improve to 2-3 in the conference. Oswego State still can control their destiny with 2 games remaining against SUNY Cortland and SUNY Brockport before the start of conference playoffs. The Lakers currently hold the final spot in the post season as the team prepares for a contest against the Red Dragons from SUNY Cortland this Wednesday at Laker Turf Stadium. Oswego State women’s hockey completes season sweep against SUNY Canton
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team defeated the SUNY Canton Kangaroos 3-1 tonight in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The Lakers got their thirteenth win and extend their win streak to five games on Senior Night where Oswego State honored Chyne Kennedy, alternate captain Aislinn McAleer, and captain Philomena Teggart.
Heading into the second period, the Lakers and Kangaroos were tied at 1-1. The teams would trade shots in the second stanza but the score would remain the same heading into the final period of regulation. Early in the third period, Morgan Shines set up line mate Kyliegh Grugin for the game winning goal. Grugin got her seventh goal of the season and Shines snags another assist to push her point total to fifteen on the campaign. Ariella Haas got her fifth goal of the season to seal the deal for the Lakers. Haas continues to lead the team in points after transferring from Elmira College.
With tonight’s NEWHL conference win, the Oswego State women’s hockey team clinches a spot in the conference post season. Currently, the Lakers are tied with SUNY Cortland for second place in the conference standings with a total of 21 points. On Tuesday, the Lakers will play on the road against SUNY Potsdam with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m. up in Potsdam. The Bears are now in the fourth seed in the standings two points above the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton. Oswego Buccaneers Boys Hockey Finishes 2021 Season
[et_pb_section admin_label=”section”] [et_pb_row admin_label=”row”] [et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text”]OSWEGO, N.Y. — A few months ago, a high school hockey season for the Oswego Buccaneers seemed very unlikely. However with a quick announcement allowing high schools to begin practices, the condensed season was going to occur and at a very rapid pace.
Oswego started off their season caught off guard by facing opponents they typically do not square off against but did this year due to the new COVID-19 enforced divisions based on location and not school size. Through the month of February, the Bucs would get three wins but also dealt six losses with two of them against a well known Division II favorite in Section III, the Skaneateles Lakers who went 14-0-2 this season.
It was a quick turn around in March as Oswego was able to win their first four games of the month convincingly outscoring their opponents 22 to 4 in those four matchups, as well as earning five wins and receiving only two losses in March. When head coach Kevin Ahern was asked what were some possible factors in the turnaround he did not hesitate.
“We have settled into some of the systems that we’re trying to implement… our puck movement has gotten much better, our d-zone has tightened up, and our goaltending is playing well,” Kevin Ahern said.
It was bittersweet for 6 seniors at the end of the season as they were fortunate enough to have a season but bid farewell to their high school hockey careers and home games at what they know as “The Fort”. With a large veteran core coming back, including eleven seniors in 2022; look for the Buccaneers to be hungry for a potential deep playoff run in Section III this upcoming season with their young determination and depth.
