Women’s Soccer dominant in 1-0 win
HOUGHTON, N.Y. — The Oswego State Women’s soccer team took to the road on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup with the Houghton University Highlanders. The Lakers completely dominated the first half of the game. They got their first shot of the half at the just after the ninth minute of the first half and didn’t let up from there. They fired off five more shots before the thirtieth minute, three of them requiring saves from the Houghton keeper. The fifth of those shots found the back of the net. A cross off the foot of Amber McDermott found the head of Maggie Riordan for the only goal of the game, Riordan’s first of the season. McDermott became the eight different Oswego player to record an assist in only three games for the team. In total the Lakers ended up getting 10 shots off in the first half to Houghton’s one. They also had six corner kicks too Houghton’s none. The Highlander’s had a few chances early in the second half, including one in the 66th minute that required the only save of the day by Oswego goalie Perri Anderson. Both teams fought hard for a goal in the second half but the defenses prevailed for a scoreless second half. Maggie Riordan led the team in shots and shots on goal, five and four respectively. Sophomore Perri Anderson started in goal for the third time this season, this time playing the entire ninety minutes, after only playing one half of each of the previous two games.
The Lakers are now 3-0. They are yet to allow a goal this season. This is the first time since 2013 they have won three straight shutout games. The Lakers will head to Dunkirk, N.Y. on Friday to start the Fredonia tournament. They will take on the Ithica Bombers at 1:00 P.M.

Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Eliminated from SUNYAC Championship Contention
BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team lost their third SUNYAC game of the season on Wednesday, falling to the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles 20-8. This is the Lakers second loss to the Golden Eagles in 2021 after previously losing 22-9 on April 17th. With Wednesday’s victory, Brockport moved to 7-1 in SUNYAC play and clinched first place in the west division.
Brockport came out of the opening faceoff firing as freshman midfielder, Logan Hibbard, scored back-to-back goals within the first 4 minutes of play. Oswego’s Shae McConnell responded quickly, bringing the score to 2-1. However, that would be as close as it game got. The Golden Eagles went on an 8-goal run throughout the first half and outscored the Lakers 7-5 in the second. Oswego wasn’t able to generate much offense in this contest. They shot the ball just 19 times all game and only 9 times in the first half. Freshman attack, Isabella Lembo, lead Oswego in scoring, totaling 3 goals on three shots. Logan Castiglione had 3 points of her own as she scored twice and added an assist. While Lakers leading scorer, Sela Wiley, didn’t have her usual outstanding game, she still scored once.
This loss drops Oswego to 3-3 in the West division and while they still sit in third place, they remain two games behind Geneseo. The Lakers have been mathematically eliminated for the SUNYAC Championship after their loss as Geneseo would secure the second spot in the division. Oswego was originally scheduled to take on SUNY Fredonia on April 24th, however, the game was cancelled following positive Covid tests from Fredonia. Now, Oswego will have the opportunity to improve to 4-3 against SUNY Geneseo on April 25th, their last scheduled game of the 2021 season. Women’s Hockey holds off Cortland to tie
OSWEGO — The Women’s Hockey team recorded a 3-3 tie against the Cortland Red Dragons this past Saturday. The Lakers striked first six minutes into the first period as Amber Thomas buried one past the Cortland goalie. She would also tally an assist later in the game. Captain Kate Randazzo would score on the powerplay in the second stanza to increase the Lakers lead. The third period would feature a scoring spree as Emily Gustafson got on the board with her first of the season. Three goals came from Cortland in the final eight minutes to force overtime which ended with the tie. This tie moves Oswego into fifth in the conference heading into another NEWHL match up against the Canton ‘Roos. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. this Friday in the Marano Campus Center. Coverage will begin at 6:30 p.m. on WTOP 10.
