OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team got back into the win column on Friday night with a 2-1 conference victory over the Morrisville State Mustangs on home ice. The Lakers got their sixth conference win after the game winning goal came in the third period on the powerplay. Oswego State scored first in the contest with a goal in the first period to take the lead. Lizzie Burke got the lone period goal with an assist from Morgan Shines. The Lakers and Mustangs would go scoreless in the second period to keep the game a one goal game heading into the final stanza. Just thirty-nine seconds into the third period, Morrisville State tied the game to make for an exciting finish. Simone Bednarik was able to capitalize on the man advantage after burying a goal after a pass from defenseman Chyne Kennedy. Oswego State was able to hold on for the victory and Joanna Hiebert got the win in between the pipes for the Lakers. The goaltender made fourteen saves over the course of the contest and only gave up one goal against.

That win puts Oswego State tied for third place in the NEWHL conference standings. The team has thirteen points along with SUNY Canton. Plattsburgh State and SUNY Cortland still sit above the Lakers while SUNY Potsdam, Morrisville State, and Buffalo State round out the conference. Oswego will now set their sights on SUNY Canton as the Lakers will face off against the Kangaroos the next three games. The series kicks off on Friday, February 4th, in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena as the contest is set for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop against the Kangaroos. On Saturday, Oswego State will head on the road to play in Canton with another 3:00 p.m. contest.
