MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — It was a very impressive performance for the Oswego State women’s hockey team Tuesday night as they shut out SUNY Morrisville 8-0. Everything was clicking for the Lakers as they easily soared past the opposing team in this NEWHL matchup. Junior Ariella Haas left it all on the ice with a whopping four goals to lead the team to victory. Other scores for the Lakers include Morgan Shines, Chyne Kennedy, and Taylor Hudson. The Lakers were off to an electric start when transfer Chyne Kennedy scored her first goal as a Laker against her former Morrisville squad just a minute into the matchup. This goal set the pace for the rest of the contest as the Lakers kept the goals coming in hot. With only four losses on the season the Lakers are establishing themselves as a very dominant team capable of shutting down opponents with ease.
With this incredible performance the Lakers head to the two seed SUNY Plattsburgh in a rivalry game that should not disappoint. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. on Friday in North Country. WTOP 10 will continue to provide coverage of the Oswego State women’s hockey team for the rest of the 2021-22 season.

The Lakers success was finally rewarded with a national ranking two weeks ago. The team had hovered just outside of the rankings for a few weeks before finally cracking the top 25 with number 25 last week, then jumping up to 22 this week (you can find the rankings here: https://d3hoops.com/top25/men/2021-22/week7). The resume includes the undefeated conference play, and a win against a then ranked Rensaellar Polytechnic Institute, their lone loss coming to a ranked Nazareth (25). With most likely four weeks left of rankings, the Lakers look to climb higher up. The teams around them include the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (21) and Wesleyan University (20) above, and Augsburg (23) and Emory University (24) below.

NYSPHSAA releases Return to Interscholastic Athletics resource for 2020-21 Season

OSWEGO, NY — On Friday, September 4th, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association released a lengthy document containing plans and guidelines for the 2020-21 sports season. The Return to Interscholastic Athletics resource was put together by staff of the association to give member schools aid on how sports should be handled during the COVID-19 pandemic. The NYSPHSAA worded with the New York State Department of Health to classify sports into three different categories, Low Risk, Moderate Risk, and High Risk. Each fall sport received a category based on the ability to social distance and the ability to avoid touching shared experiment during play.
With the prior announcement that the fall sports season would begin on September 21st, school districts now know what sports will be permitted to compete compared to just practicing. The Low and Moderate Risk sports of Cross-Country, Field Hockey, Golf, Gymnastics, Soccer, Girls Swimming & Diving, Girls Tennis will be permitted to begin play inside their section or league until October 19th. After that date, schools will be allowed to compete beyond their section. The High Risk sports of Cheerleading, Football, and Volleyball will be permitted to practice. However, teams will not be able to compete against other schools till approved by the NYSDOH, or after December 31st. There will be no regional/state championships for the fall sports season.
A few weeks prior, the NYSPHSAA announced that the Winter sports season will be pushed back to November 30th, previously November 16th. This change gave the fall sports season two extra weeks to account for the push back of that season. March 15th is now the official start date for Spring Sports. Both winter and spring still have State Championships scheduled, which may be subject to change.
The association has also determined that school districts can determine if junior varsity or modified teams will be allowed to participate in the 2020-21 season. WTOP 10 will continue to provide coverage on the ever-evolving high school sports situation.

Men’s Hockey Loses to Elmira College

OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Hockey continued non-conference play Saturday night against Elmira College but fell short after the Lakers mounted another third period comeback. The 4-3 final featured similar stories to Friday night’s game against nationally ranked Utica College. The Soaring Eagles would open the scoring just 19 seconds into the game before sophomore Josh LeBlanc would tally his first goal of the season. Senior Cedric Hansen started in net for Oswego but gave up two more goals early on before David Richer was brought into the game just 30 seconds into the second period. Freshman Alex DiCarlo would lead the third period charge with two goals in only his ninth collegiate game, with that first goal being his first ever collegiate goal. The freshman, who is not a regular in the Oswego line up, has six points (2 goals & 4 assists) so far through his first season.
The Lakers still set a top the SUNYAC conference, however the Lakers are .500 for the first time all season. The team travels to Nazareth for another non-conference matchup where the Lakers look to turn their season around. The Lakers have had success against the Golden Flyers, as the teams faced off for an exhibition game in Oswego this past October. The 4-3 final featured four different scorers for the Lakers along with two different goaltenders in net for the team. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. from the Bill Gray’s Iceplex.
