SUNY Geneseo Professor Discusses Dinosaur Forelimb Evolution
OSWEGO, NY — Visiting professor Sara Burch made an appearance on campus in a public lecture to educate students on her research concerning predatory dinosaurs, specifically the evolution of their forelimbs. The students who had attended this lecture were given a new way of thinking about our evolutionary predecessors
“The past of, like, you know, dinosaurs, all this kind of stuff, is more complicated than we thought about when we were kids,” said student Michael Fontana. “But it’s a lot more in-depth than what we previously thought of.”
Professor Burch’s research had started since her undergraduate degree. Her discoveries were accompanied by the research of her Geneseo students, who had made their own in-depth discoveries about the dinosaurs, and she is hopeful that students may rethink the stereotype of the dinosaurs’ forelimbs
“I think what I would hope to take away is to kind of challenge their ideas of what dinosaurs might have been doing with their forelimbs,” Professor Burch said. “So, you know, the T-Rex, everyone knows they have tiny forelimbs, they weren’t using them, but hopefully, maybe I convinced some people that they were maybe using them, and that there’s a lot more behind the story.”
Professor Bursch’s research with her students at SUNY Geneseo still continues to this day.

I Am Oz Speaker: Winona LaDuke

Oswego, NY- Environmentalist and former Green Party Vice Presidential candidate Winona LaDuke spoke to members of the Oswego State community on Mar. 28. Her talk is part of the “I Am Oz” diversity speaker series.
LaDuke spoke on current political issues Americans and Native Americans are facing as well as the role we have in society. She stressed the idea that college students have the opportunity to think critically.
“As college students you have the full opportunity to be critical thinkers and do good,” LaDuke said.
The biggest issue she discussed was climate change and the steps the government should be taking in order to be more aware of it.
LaDuke has an extensive background in the environmental field. She has put her knowledge to work by challenging government and taking on big oil companies, including her involvement in the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. She is also the founder of the White Earth Land Recovery Project.
LaDuke says the key to changing the Earth is think about what it will be like seven years from now. At the current rate, she believes it may be inhabitable by then. She challenged her audience at the end of speech to change the Earth.
“Let us be creative,” she said. “Let us do what the great leader Sitting Bull said, and let us put our minds together to see what kind of future we can make for our children.”

SUNY Oswego continues to offer travel accommodations for breaks

OSWEGO, N.Y.– Finding a way home for Thanksgiving Break can be stressful for students without a means of transportation. SUNY Oswego offers a few ways for students to travel home during long breaks.
The college offers three ways for students to travel home for breaks; shuttle bus, college express bus, and zip cars.
The Greyhound and Trailways shuttle buses travel from the Regional Transportation Center (RTC) and Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport. The College Express is a bus shuttle service from SUNY Oswego to downstate, including stops in New York City, New Jersey, Rockland and Orange Counties, Queens and Long Island. The prices for the College Express service varies between one way, round trip, walk on and reservations.
If you would like to buy a ticket, you can visit Lesley Wallace in the Compass to make your reservation, and she will handle your payments and any other information a student may have.
SUNY Oswego offers Zipcars for students who do not wish to ride a bus, train, or plane. Zipcars are a rental car service where members of the service can reserve a car for as little as 1 hour or as long as 7 days. The prices vary, depending on the car and hour long you wish to borrow the car, but gas and insurance are included. Student memberships are $15.To purchase tickets for the Greyhound shuttle, go to the Compass located at 145 Marano Campus Center.
